    Linguistic and Computational Approaches to Information in Discourse: Theme, Focus, Given and Other Dangerous Things

    This paper addresses the information communication problem faced by interlocutors during the process of text production and understanding. Different processes govern the flow of information in discourse, such as the process of content selection, the process of information distribution, and the process of thematic organization.These processes have to be encoded by the text producer into a single linear structure to be decoded by the text receiver in the complementary process of discourse comprehension. Different disciplines, such as Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence, have studied these phenomena from different perspectives, thus developing different, but related categories, with overlapping meanings in many occasions, for the study of information structure in discourse. This paper reviews the commonalities and the different uses of categories such as topic, theme, given/new, and focus in both disciplines, and provides operational redefinitions for these notions in an attempt to integrate them into a unified account of information structure in discourse which might be useful for both descriptive and computational purposes

    La barraca Valenciana. Aspectos climáticos y construcción tradicional

    [ES] Es un viaje a lo largo de la vida de la barraca valenciana donde estudiamos sus orígenes conocidos, su evolución arquitectónica y sus variantes, así como la impronta dejada dentro de la sociedad, cultura, arquitectura y agricultura valenciana a lo largo de siglos de vida. Analizaremos como la arquitectura popular se aprovechaba de todo lo que le rodeaba, desde el clima que moldea la barraca, hasta como es conformada con la misma tierra sobre la que se levanta por las manos poseedoras de conocimientos adquiridos que no deben ser perdidos. Analizaremos también la barraca como se haría a con cualquier construcción actual para certificarla energéticamente. Veremos contrapuestas antiguas construcciones vernáculas similares a la barraca, contra concepciones más modernas como lo es la permacultura, la bioconstrucción o la arquitectura Aframe. La intención de este trabajo es poner en valía estos conceptos de siglos pasados y, recopilar y aportar los conocimientos básicos para poder construir una barraca valenciana al estilo tradicional mediante las técnicas utilizadas antiguamente pero adaptándolas a la actualidad, sin que ello deteriore el concepto vernáculo y de arquitectura popular presente en la huerta de Valencia.[EN] It is a trip throughout the life of the Valencian barrack where we have studied its known origins, its architectural evolution and its variants, as well as the imprint left within society, culture, architecture and the Valencian agriculture throughout centuries (of life). We will analise how popular architecture took advantage of everything that surrounded it, from the climate that molds the barrack, to how it is conformed to the same land on which is raised by hands possessing acquired knowledge that should not be lost. We will also analise the barrack as it would with any current construction to certify it energetically. We will see opposing old vernacular constructions similar to the barrack, against more modern conceptions such as permaculture, bioconstruction or A-frame architecture. The intention of this proyect is to put into effect these concepts of past centuries and to compile and contribute the basic knowledge to be able to build a traditional Valencian barrack using the techniques used in the past but adapting them to the present, without deteriorating the vernacular concept and the popular architecture present in the orchard of Valencia.Lavid Saiz, A.     Gestión educativa y participación familiar en el centro de desarrollo infantil Los Popeyes Guayaquil - Ecuador, 2018

    El trabajo investigativo es con el propósito de determinar la relación entre la gestión educativa y participación familiar en el Centro de Desarrollo Infantil Los Popeyes, Guayaquil – Ecuador, 2018. El centro está ubicado al sur de la ciudad Guasmo Sur Cooperativa Cesar Sandino # 2 Mz. 2001 Sl.13 en el Centro existe una deficiente participación de la familia en el proceso de formación del niño, lo cual se da debido al escaso o limitado tiempo que le dan a sus hijos ocasionando problemas afectivos y cognitivos en los niños y niñas. Para el desarrollo de la investigación se utilizó el método cuantitativo. Considerando el tipo correlacional, utilizando el diseño descriptivo - correlacional, por otro lado la muestra fue seleccionada considerando a 40 padres de familia del Centro. La obtención de los datos se realizó mediante el uso de dos cuestionarios que permitió considerar las variables gestión educativa y la participación familiar, se los aplicó al personal de la institución, que se los validó utilizando la matriz de validación. En el análisis que se hizo a los datos se consideró que las pruebas estadísticas r de Pearson y la t de Student iban a permitir un mejor nivel de interpretación de los resultados. Estos resultados mostraron un predominio en el nivel de gestión educativa inadecuado considerando un 55%, así mismo se tuvo un mayor nivel de participación familiar regular con el 57.50%. Se pudo determinar que sí existe relación entre las variables del estudio. Se consideró el grado de relación partiendo de los datos con el coeficiente r de Pearson fue de 0,564** (Sig.= 0.000 < 0,01) lo que indica una correlación alta, directa y significativa a nivel 0.01. Se concluye que existe una relación significativa entre la gestión educativa y la participación familiar hallándose que existen falencias en la gestión educativa porque no se ejerce un liderazgo en el nivel directivo que permita involucrar a los padres de familia en el contexto educativo

    Genre Realized in Theme: The Case of News Reports and Commentaries

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the clausal thematic features observed in two newspaper genres —news reports and commentaries— can be interpreted as textual signals of their different generic characterization. This is done through the qualitative and quantitative analysis of a sample consisting of thirty-three English texts, divided into two groups of seventeen news reports and sixteen commentaries, respectively. The analysis focused on the following thematic features: (1) the experiential elements selected as Thematic Heads; (2) the semantic nature of the nominal elements realizing these Heads and their internal structure; (3) the textual and interpersonal thematic choices as part of a multiple theme. The analysis reveals that each newspaper genre prefers certain thematic features and that the differences between the two genres are statistically significant. It is suggested that these thematic preferences can be attributed to genre-related variables such as the communicative purpose or the subject matter of the text

    Adverbs as evidentials: an English-Spanish contrastive analysis of twelve adverbs in spoken and newspaper discourse

    This paper presents a contrastive analysis of six English evidential adverbs ending in -ly with their Spanish nearest translation equivalents, in spoken and newspaper discourse. The adverbs may be associated with varying degrees of reliability: high (clearly/claramente, evidently/evidentemente, obviously/obviamente), medium (apparently/al parecer) and low (seemingly/aparentemente, supposedly/supuestamente). The analysis is based on tokens of authentic language extracted from two contemporary corpora, the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA). The qualitative analysis focuses on the evidential functions of the adverbs and on their pragmatic interactional uses; the quantitative analysis centres on the relative frequency of type of evidential functions and the clausal position of the adverbs. The results uncover a number of differences between the English adverbs and their Spanish correlates and also between the two discourse types. Practically all the adverbs are strongly specialized in expressing either indirect-inferential or indirect-reportative evidentiality. English obviously and Spanish evidentemente show a high frequency of cases of loss of evidential meaning due to pragmaticalization, specifically in spoken discourse. Regarding position, the English adverbs are more frequent in medial clausal position, while some Spanish adverbs are often found in the more prominent parenthetical position
