Impacto da vacinação contra o Haemophilus influenzae b na redução de meningites, Goiás
OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in reducing the incidence of meningitis among children under five years old. METHODS: A 'before-after' design was used to compare Hib meningitis incidence rates in the pre-vaccine (July 1995 - June 1999) and post-vaccine (July 1999 - June 2001) periods in the state of Goiás, central Brazil. Bacterial meningitis case definition was based on World Health Organization criteria. Incidence rates of S. pneumoniae and N. meningitidis were used for comparison purposes. Chi-squared and Student's t tests were used for statistical analysis. P-values below 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: 979 children with acute bacterial meningitis were detected throughout the entire period. The incidence rate of Hib meningitis decreased from 10.8 (x10(5)) in the pre-vaccine period to 2.3 (x10(5)) in the 2nd year post vaccination, leading to a risk reduction of 78%, targeted to the 7-23 months age group (pOBJETIVO: Avaliar o impacto da vacinação contra o Haemophilus influenzae b na incidência de meningites em crianças menores de cinco anos de idade. The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics' resources: focus on curated databases
The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (www.isb-sib.ch) provides world-class bioinformatics databases, software tools, services and training to the international life science community in academia and industry. These solutions allow life scientists to turn the exponentially growing amount of data into knowledge. Here, we provide an overview of SIB's resources and competence areas, with a strong focus on curated databases and SIB's most popular and widely used resources. In particular, SIB's Bioinformatics resource portal ExPASy features over 150 resources, including UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, ENZYME, PROSITE, neXtProt, STRING, UniCarbKB, SugarBindDB, SwissRegulon, EPD, arrayMap, Bgee, SWISS-MODEL Repository, OMA, OrthoDB and other databases, which are briefly described in this article

A incidência de meningite por Haemophilus influenzae b diminuiu de 10,8x10(5) no período pré-vacinal para 2,3x10(5) no segundo ano pós-vacina, significando 78% de redução no risco, principalmente na faixa etária de 7-23 meses (p<0,05). Foram prevenidos 65 casos de meningite por Haemophilus influenzae b. Observou-se aumento na incidência de meningite por S. pneumoniae. Foi observada falha vacinal em um caso. CONCLUSÕES: Expressivo declínio da incidência de meningite por Haemophilus influenzae b foi detectado, precocemente, logo após o primeiro ano de introdução da vacina contra o Haemophilus influenzae b. Assim, se faz necessária a vigilância contínua com instrumental de alta acurácia para: (i) detectar re-emergência do Haemophilus influenzae b; (ii) avaliar possibilidade de falha vacinal; (iii) identificar mudanças no padrão dos sorotipos do H. influenzae
Inter-laboratory evaluation of the ISO standard 11063 "Soil quality -- Method to directly extract DNA from soil samples"
International audienceExtracting DNA directly from micro-organisms living in soil is a crucial step for the molecular analysis of soil microbial communities. However, the use of a plethora of different soil DNA extraction protocols, each with its own bias, makes accurate data comparison difficult. To overcome this problem, a method for soil DNA extraction was proposed to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2006. This method was evaluated by 13 independent European laboratories actively participating in national and international ring tests. The reproducibility of the standardized method for molecular analyses was evaluated by comparing the amount of DNA extracted, as well as the abundance and genetic structure of the total bacterial community in the DNA extracted from 12 different soils by the 13 laboratories. High quality DNA was successfully extracted from all 12 soils, despite different physical and chemical characteristics and a range of origins from arable soils, through forests to industrial sites. Quantification of the 16S rRNA gene abundances by real time PCR and analysis of the total bacterial community structure by automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (A-RISA) showed acceptable to good levels of reproducibility. Based on the results of both ring-tests, the method was unanimously approved by the ISO as an international standard method and the normative protocol will now be disseminated within the scientific community. Standardization of a soil DNA extraction method will improve data comparison, facilitating our understanding of soil microbial diversity and soil quality monitoring
Serious adverse events associated with yellow fever 17DD vaccine in Brazil: a report of two cases

safest attenuated virus vaccines, with few side-effects or
adverse events. We report the occurrence of two fatal cases of
haemorrhagic fever associated with yellow fever 17DD
substrain vaccine in Brazil.
Methods We obtained epidemiological, serological, virological,
pathological, immunocytochemical, and molecular biological
data on the two cases to determine the cause of the illnesses.
Findings The first case, in a 5-year-old white girl, was
characterised by sudden onset of fever accompanied by
headache, malaise, and vomiting 3 days after receiving yellow
fever and measles-mumps-rubella vaccines. Afterwards she
decompensated with icterus and haemorrhagic signs and died
after a 5-day illness. The second patient—a 22-year-old black
woman—developed a sore throat and fever accompanied by
headache, myalgia, nausea, and vomiting 4 days after yellow
fever vaccination. She then developed icterus, renal failure,
and haemorrhagic diathesis, and died after 6 days of illness.
Yellow fever virus was recovered in suckling mice and C6/36
cells from blood in both cases, as well as from fragments of
liver, spleen, skin, and heart from the first case and from these
and other viscera fragments in case 2. RNA of yellow fever virus
was identical to that previously described for 17D genomic
sequences. IgM ELISA tests for yellow fever virus were negative in case 1 and positive in case 2; similar tests for dengue,
hantaviruses, arenaviruses, Leptospira, and hepatitis viruses
A–D were negative. Tissue injuries from both patients were
typical of wild-type yellow fever.
Interpretation These serious and hitherto unknown
complications of yellow fever vaccination are extremely rare,
but the safety of yellow fever 17DD vaccine needs to be
reviewed. Host factors, probably idiosyncratic reactions, might
have had a substantial contributed to the unexpected outcome
Horizontal transport, mixing and retention in a large, shallow estuary: Río de la Plata

We use field data and a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic numerical model to investigate the horizontal transport and dispersion characteristics in the upper reaches of the shallow Río de la Plata estuary, located between the Argentinean and Uruguayan coasts, with the objective of relating the mixing characteristics to the likelihood of algal bloom formation. The 3D hydrodynamic model was validated with an extensive field experiment including both, synoptic profiling and in situ data, and then used to quantify the geographic variability of the local residence time and rate of dispersion. We show that during a high inflow regime, the aquatic environment near the Uruguayan coast, stretching almost to the middle of the estuary, had short residence time and horizontal dispersion coefficient of around 77 (formula presented.), compared to the conditions along the Argentinean coastal regime where the residence time was much longer and the dispersion coefficient (40 (formula pr esented.)) much smaller, making the Argentinian coastal margin more susceptible for algae blooms
Physical and biological controls of algal blooms in the Río de la Plata

Coupled three-dimensional hydrodynamic and ecological numerical simulations were used to investigate the role of transport, stagnation zones and dispersion on inter-annual blooms of the diatom Aulacoseira sp. in the vicinity of the drinking water intakes of the Buenos Aires city (Argentina) in the upper Río de la Plata. Three different summer events were analyzed. First, a mild biomass bloom year (2006–2007), second, a high biomass bloom year (2007–2008) and third, a “normal” no bloom year (2009–2010). Simulated water height, water temperature, suspended solids and chloroph yll (formula presented.) concentrations patterns compared well with field data. Results revealed that the advection of phytoplankton cells via inflows to the Río de la Plata triggered Aulacoseira sp. blooms in the domain. In addition, excessive growth observed near the drinking water intakes, along the Argentinean margin, were associated with long retention times (stagnant region) and weak horizontal dispersion. Increased concentrations of suspended solids in the water column, in response to re-suspension events, did not prevent the blooms, however, were found to also play a key role in controlling the rate of phytoplankton growth. Finally, a non-dimensional parameter, R, that considers phytoplankton patch size, e-folding growth and dispersion time scales is shown to determine the potential bloom occurrences, as well as bloom intensity; R values higher than 5.7 suggest intense phytoplankton growth. Next-generation ARIA care pathways for rhinitis and asthma: a model for multimorbid chronic diseases
Abstract Background In all societies, the burden and cost of allergic and chronic respiratory diseases are increasing rapidly. Most economies are struggling to deliver modern health care effectively. There is a need to support the transformation of the health care system into integrated care with organizational health literacy. Main body As an example for chronic disease care, MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK), a new project of the ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) initiative, and POLLAR (Impact of Air POLLution on Asthma and Rhinitis, EIT Health), in collaboration with professional and patient organizations in the field of allergy and airway diseases, are proposing real-life ICPs centred around the patient with rhinitis, and using mHealth to monitor environmental exposure. Three aspects of care pathways are being developed: (i) Patient participation, health literacy and self-care through technology-assisted “patient activation”, (ii) Implementation of care pathways by pharmacists and (iii) Next-generation guidelines assessing the recommendations of GRADE guidelines in rhinitis and asthma using real-world evidence (RWE) obtained through mobile technology. The EU and global political agendas are of great importance in supporting the digital transformation of health and care, and MASK has been recognized by DG Santé as a Good Practice in the field of digitally-enabled, integrated, person-centred care. Conclusion In 20 years, ARIA has considerably evolved from the first multimorbidity guideline in respiratory diseases to the digital transformation of health and care with a strong political involvement
