    Effects of warm water intrusions on populations of macrozooplankton on Georges Bank, Northwest Atlantic

The definitive version was published in Continental Shelf Research 25 (2005): 143-156, doi:10.1016/j.csr.2004.07.028.As part of the Georges Bank/North West Atlantic GLOBEC (Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics) Program, macrozooplankton and micronekton were collected on 30 Broad Scale Survey Cruises between January – June, 1995 –1999, using a 10 m2 MOCNESS (3mm mesh). The objective of this study is to examine the effects of warm water intrusions on populations of macrozooplankton, namely Salpa spp., Phronima spp., Neomysis americana, and Crangon septemspinosa, on Georges Bank. Salpa spp. and Phronima spp. showed a large degree of horizontal co-occurrence, being found predominantly in Upper Slope/Gulf Stream Water and Georges Bank/Gulf of Maine Water. Abundances of these taxa showed striking interannual variability, and were only abundant on the southern flank and in the Northeast Channel in late spring/early summer of 1995 and 1999, periods during which AVHRR imagery and hydrographic data showed the presence of warm water intrusions. These intrusions seemed to have little effect on the distribution of other macrozooplankton (e.g., Neomysis americana and Crangon septemspinosa). Warm water intrusions can directly affect Salpa spp. and Phronima spp. populations by advecting them onto Georges Bank, although other, more resident populations, especially those inside the 100m isobath, seem to be little affected by such intrusions.Additional thanks goes to Tom Niesen and Stan Williams for their advice on data analysis and interpretation.     Molecular mechanisms of cell death: recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death 2018.

    Over the past decade, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) has formulated guidelines for the definition and interpretation of cell death from morphological, biochemical, and functional perspectives. Since the field continues to expand and novel mechanisms that orchestrate multiple cell death pathways are unveiled, we propose an updated classification of cell death subroutines focusing on mechanistic and essential (as opposed to correlative and dispensable) aspects of the process. As we provide molecularly oriented definitions of terms including intrinsic apoptosis, extrinsic apoptosis, mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)-driven necrosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, parthanatos, entotic cell death, NETotic cell death, lysosome-dependent cell death, autophagy-dependent cell death, immunogenic cell death, cellular senescence, and mitotic catastrophe, we discuss the utility of neologisms that refer to highly specialized instances of these processes. The mission of the NCCD is to provide a widely accepted nomenclature on cell death in support of the continued development of the field

    A structured dialogue tool for argumentative learning

    This paper presents a structured environment for Computer-Supported Collaborative Argumentation, which we call the Argumentative Learning Experience (ALEX). The system aims to improve understanding of argumentation and to widen and deepen the space of debate among 16–18-year-old students. To use ALEX users make arguments by selecting and completing partial sentences. An automatically created visual representation of the argument is displayed and personalised advice on the argumentation is provided to each user

    The aim of this work is to study joining materials and innovative bonding technologies for ultra stable joints of carbon/carbon composite (C/C) sandwich panels for the manufacturing of next generation space instruments. The proposed solutions have low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and coefficient of moisture expansion (CME), and a good mechanical strength, in order to guarantee the dimensional stability and mechanical reliability of the joined C/C panel

    Van Klink et al. (Reports, 24 April 2020, p. 417) argue for a more nuanced view of insect decline, and of human responsibility for this decline, than previously suggested. However, shortcomings in data selection and methodology raise questions about their conclusions on trends and drivers. We call for more rigorous methodology to be applied in meta-analyses of ecological data

    Antithymocyte globulin before allogeneic stem cell transplantation for progressive myelodysplastic syndrome : a study from the French Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy

    We investigated the impact of rabbit antithymocyte globulins (ATG) on patient outcomes after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for progressive myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Of the 242 consecutive patients who underwent allo-SCT for progressive MDS between October 1999 and December 2009, 93 received ATG (ATG group) at the median dose of 5 mg/kg, whereas 149 patients did not (no-ATG group). Donors were sibling (n Œ 153) or HLA-matched unrelated (n Œ 89). Patients received blood (n Œ 90) or marrow (n Œ 152) grafts after either myeloablative (n Œ 109) or reduced-intensity (n Œ 133) conditioning. Three-year overall and event-free survival, nonrelapse mortality, relapse, and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) development were not significantly different between the 2 groups. In contrast, acute grade II to IV GVHD occurred more often in the no-ATG group (55% of the patients) than in the ATG group (27%, P < .0001). Similar results were observed with acute grade III to IV GVHD (28% and 14% in the no-ATG group and ATG group, respectively; P Œ .009). In multivariate analysis, after adjustment with propensity score, the absence of ATG was the strongest parameter associated with an increased risk of acute grade II to IV GVHD (hazard ratio, 2.13; 95% confidence interval, 1.35 to 3.37; P Œ.001]. ATG had no impact on overall and event-free survival or cumulative incidence of the relapse. In conclusion, the addition of ATG to allo-SCT conditioning did not increase the incidence of relapse of patients with progressive MDS. The incidence of acute GVHD was decreased without compromising outcomes
