On modular signs
We consider some questions related to the signs of Hecke eigenvalues or
Fourier coefficients of classical modular forms. One problem is to determine to
what extent those signs, for suitable sets of primes, determine uniquely the
modular form, and we give both individual and statistical results. The second
problem, which has been considered by a number of authors, is to determine the
size, in terms of the conductor and weight, of the first sign-change of Hecke
eigenvalues. Here we improve significantly the recent estimate of Iwaniec,
Kohnen and Sengupta.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure; new version with new coauthor and strong
improvements of two of the two main results
Persistent junk solutions in time-domain modeling of extreme mass ratio binaries
In the context of metric perturbation theory for non-spinning black holes,
extreme mass ratio binary (EMRB) systems are described by distributionally
forced master wave equations. Numerical solution of a master wave equation as
an initial boundary value problem requires initial data. However, because the
correct initial data for generic-orbit systems is unknown, specification of
trivial initial data is a common choice, despite being inconsistent and
resulting in a solution which is initially discontinuous in time. As is well
known, this choice leads to a "burst" of junk radiation which eventually
propagates off the computational domain. We observe another unintended
consequence of trivial initial data: development of a persistent spurious
solution, here referred to as the Jost junk solution, which contaminates the
physical solution for long times. This work studies the influence of both types
of junk on metric perturbations, waveforms, and self-force measurements, and it
demonstrates that smooth modified source terms mollify the Jost solution and
reduce junk radiation. Our concluding section discusses the applicability of
these observations to other numerical schemes and techniques used to solve
distributionally forced master wave equations.Comment: Uses revtex4, 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Document reformatted and
modified based on referee's report. Commentary added which addresses the
possible presence of persistent junk solutions in other approaches for
solving master wave equation

Checklist of spiders in Tasek Bera Ramsar Site, Pahang, Malaysia
Established since 1995, Tasek Bera is a wetland of international importance. It comprises an area of 31,120 hectares. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in Malaysia. The natural freshwater lake is rich in local flora and fauna. A study of the biodiversity of spider was carried out during the Biodiversity Inventory Program at Tasek Bera Ramsar Site, Pahang from 20th to 26th May 2009.
Throughout the program a total of 216 spiders were collected. Among them, 13 families of spider, namely the Agelenidae, Araneidae, Lycosidae, Nephilidae, Oxyopidae, Pholcidae, Pisauridae, Psechridae, Salticidae, Sparassidae, Tetragnathidae, Theridiidae, and Thomisidae were recorded. Most spiders found on web built between branches are the members of Araneidae, Nephilidae, Psechridae, Tetragnathidae, and Theridiidae while others were either foraging on trees (Oxyopidae, Pholcidae, Pisauridae, and Salticidae) or on the ground (Agelenidae, Lycosidae, and Sparassidae). A high variety of spider species were recorded

The association between negative attention biases and symptoms of depression in a community sample of adolescents
Adolescence is a vulnerable time for the onset of depression. Recent evidence from adult studies suggests not only that negative attention biases are correlated with symptoms of depression, but that reducing negative attention biases through training can in turn reduce symptomology. The role and plasticity of attention biases in adolescent depression, however, remains unclear. This study examines the association between symptoms of depression and attention biases, and whether such biases are modifiable, in a community sample of adolescents. We report data from 105 adolescents aged 13-17 who completed a dot-probe measure of attention bias before and after a single session of visual search-based cognitive bias modification training. This is the first study to find a significant association between negative attention biases and increased symptoms of depression in a community sample of adolescents. Contrary to expectations, we were unable to manipulate attention biases using a previously successful cognitive bias modification task. There were no significant effects of the training on positive affect and only modest effects of the training, identified in post-hoc analyses, were observed on negative affect. Our data replicate those from the adult literature, which suggest that adolescent depression is a disorder associated with negative attention biases, although we were unable to modify attention biases in our study. We identify numerous parameters of our methodology which may explain these null training effects, and which could be addressed in future cognitive bias modification studies of adolescent depression
