Palm pairs and the general mass-transport principle
We consider a lcsc group G acting properly on a Borel space S and measurably
on an underlying sigma-finite measure space. Our first main result is a
transport formula connecting the Palm pairs of jointly stationary random
measures on S. A key (and new) technical result is a measurable disintegration
of the Haar measure on G along the orbits. The second main result is an
intrinsic characterization of the Palm pairs of a G-invariant random measure.
We then proceed with deriving a general version of the mass-transport principle
for possibly non-transitive and non-unimodular group operations first in a
deterministic and then in its full probabilistic form.Comment: 26 page
The Roles of ‘Conventional’ and Demand-Responsive Bus Services
Purpose - The roles of ‘conventional’ (fixed-route and fixed-timetable) bus services is examined and compared to demand-responsive services, taking rural areas in England as the basis for comparison. It adopts a ‘rural’ definition of settlements under a population of 10,000.
Design/methodology/approach - Evidence from the National Travel Survey, technical press reports and academic work is brought together to examine the overall picture.
Findings - Inter-urban services between towns can provide a cost-effective way of serving rural areas where smaller settlements are suitably located. The cost structures of both fixed-route and demand-responsive services indicate that staff time and cost associated with vehicle provision are the main elements. Demand-responsive services may enable larger areas to be covered, to meet planning objectives of ensuring a minimum of level of service, but experience often shows high unit cost and public expenditure per passenger trip. Economic evaluation indicates user benefits per passenger trip of similar magnitude to existing average public expenditure per trip on fixed-route services. Considerable scope exists for improvements to conventional services through better marketing and service reliability.
Practical implications - The main issue in England is the level of funding for rural services in general, and the importance attached to serving those without access to cars in such areas.
Social implications - The boundary between fixed-route and demand-responsive operation may lie at relatively low population densities.
Originality/value - The chapter uses statistical data, academic research and operator experience of enhanced conventional bus services to provide a synthesis of outcomes in rural areas
Double butterfly spectrum for two interacting particles in the Harper model
We study the effect of interparticle interaction on the spectrum of the
Harper model and show that it leads to a pure-point component arising from the
multifractal spectrum of non interacting problem. Our numerical studies allow
to understand the global structure of the spectrum. Analytical approach
developed permits to understand the origin of localized states in the limit of
strong interaction and fine spectral structure for small .Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 5 figure
Bloch electron in a magnetic field and the Ising model
The spectral determinant det(H-\epsilon I) of the Azbel-Hofstadter
Hamiltonian H is related to Onsager's partition function of the 2D Ising model
for any value of magnetic flux \Phi=2\pi P/Q through an elementary cell, where
P and Q are coprime integers. The band edges of H correspond to the critical
temperature of the Ising model; the spectral determinant at these (and other
points defined in a certain similar way) is independent of P. A connection of
the mean of Lyapunov exponents to the asymptotic (large Q) bandwidth is
indicated.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, REVTE
Impact of Advanced Synoptics and Simplified Checklists During Aircraft Systems Failures
AbstractNatural human capacities are becoming increasingly mismatched to the enormous data volumes, processing capabilities, and decision speeds demanded in todays aviation environment. Increasingly Autonomous Systems (IAS) are uniquely suited to solve this problem. NASA is conducting research and development of IAS - hardware and software systems, utilizing machine learning algorithms, seamlessly integrated with humans whereby task performance of the combined system is significantly greater than the individual components. IAS offer the potential for significantly improved levels of performance and safety that are superior to either human or automation alone. A human-in-the-loop test was conducted in NASA Langleys Integration Flight Deck B-737-800 simulator to evaluate advanced synoptic pages with simplified interactive electronic checklists as an IAS for routine air carrier flight operations and in response to aircraft system failures. Twelve U.S. airline crews flew various normal and non-normal procedures and their actions and performance were recorded in response to failures. These data are fundamental to and critical for the design and development of future increasingly autonomous systems that can better support the human in the cockpit. Synoptic pages and electronic checklists significantly improved pilot responses to non-normal scenarios, but implementation of these aids and other intelligent assistants have barriers to implementation (e.g., certification cost) that must overcome
Expansion of nanoplasmas and laser-driven nuclear fusion in single exploding clusters
The expansion of laser-irradiated clusters or nanodroplets depends strongly
on the amount of energy delivered to the electrons and can be controlled by
using appropriately shaped laser pulses. In this paper, a self-consistent
kinetic model is used to analyze the transition from quasineutral,
hydrodinamic-like expansion regimes to the Coulomb explosion (CE) regime when
increasing the ratio between the thermal energy of the electrons and the
electrostatic energy stored in the cluster. It is shown that a suitable
double-pump irradiation scheme can produce hybrid expansion regimes, wherein a
slow hydrodynamic expansion is followed by a fast CE, leading to ion overtaking
and producing multiple ion flows expanding with different velocities. This can
be exploited to obtain intracluster fusion reactions in both homonuclear
deuterium clusters and heteronuclear deuterium-tritium clusters, as also proved
by three-dimensional molecular-dynamics simulations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusio
Direct Observation of Hyperfine Quenching of the (2)3p0 Level in Helium-Like Nickel
Journals published by the American Physical Society can be found at http://publish.aps.org/We report a clear demonstration of the effect of hyperfine quenching of a forbidden transition by direct comparison of the lifetimes of the 2 3P0 level in the heliumlike isotopes Ni-61(26+) and Ni-58(26+). We find the quenched lifetime of the 2 3P0 level in Ni-61(26+) to be 470(50) ps. From this we deduce the 2 3P0-2 3P1 energy splitting to be 2.33(15) eV. We also report a measurement of the lifetime of the 2 3P2 level in Ni-58(26+), which is found to be 70(3) ps
Evaluation of a Chlamydia trachomatis-specific, commercial, real-time PCR for use with ocular swabs.
BACKGROUND: Trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, is caused by conjunctival Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Trachoma is diagnosed clinically by observation of conjunctival inflammation and/or scarring; however, there is evidence that monitoring C. trachomatis infection may be required for elimination programmes. There are many commercial and 'in-house' nucleic acid amplification tests for the detection of C. trachomatis DNA, but the majority have not been validated for use with ocular swabs. This study evaluated a commercial assay, the Fast-Track Vaginal swab kit, using conjunctival samples from trachoma-endemic areas. An objective, biostatistical-based method for binary classification of continuous PCR data was developed, to limit potential user-bias in diagnostic settings. METHODS: The Fast-Track Vaginal swab assay was run on 210 ocular swab samples from Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania. Fit of individual amplification curves to exponential or sigmoid models, derivative and second derivative of the curves and final fluorescence value were examined for utility in thresholding for determining positivity. The results from the Fast-Track Vaginal swab assay were evaluated against a commercial test (Amplicor CT/NG) and a non-commercial test (in-house droplet digital PCR), both of whose performance has previously been evaluated. RESULTS: Significant evidence of exponential amplification (R2 > 0.99) and final fluorescence > 0.15 were combined for thresholding. This objective approach identified a population of positive samples, however there were a subset of samples that amplified towards the end of the cycling protocol (at or later than 35 cycles), which were less clearly defined. The Fast-Track Vaginal swab assay showed good sensitivity against the commercial (95.71) and non-commercial (97.18) tests. Specificity was lower against both (90.00 and 96.55, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study defined a simple, automated protocol for binary classification of continuous, real-time qPCR data, for use in an end-point diagnostic test. This method identified a population of positive samples, however, as with manual thresholding, a subset of samples that amplified towards the end of the cycling program were less easily classified. When used with ocular swabs, the Fast-Track Vaginal swab assay had good sensitivity for C. trachomatis detection, but lower specificity than the commercial and non-commercial assays it was evaluated against, possibly leading to false positives
Holder continuity of absolutely continuous spectral measures for one-frequency Schrodinger operators
We establish sharp results on the modulus of continuity of the distribution
of the spectral measure for one-frequency Schrodinger operators with
Diophantine frequencies in the region of absolutely continuous spectrum. More
precisely, we establish 1/2-Holder continuity near almost reducible energies
(an essential support of absolutely continuous spectrum). For
non-perturbatively small potentials (and for the almost Mathieu operator with
subcritical coupling), our results apply for all energies.Comment: 16 page
