Portuguese Population in France: a snapshot 25 years after their arrival

    Get PDF
In year 2000 Portugal is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the arrival to Brazil. The Portuguese overseas adventure is now five centuries old and more than one third of the Portuguese nationals are living outside their homeland; in France they are the largest foreign community. This paper uses the data from the French Employment Survey (Enqujte de l Emploi) 1994 and 1995 to characterise the Portuguese population and to study individual decisions taken by the Portuguese migrants concerning naturalisation, family, residence and education. As a result of the analysis it seems that the decisions of the younger Portuguese are getting closer to the decisions of their French neighbours, increasing the gap with respect to the decisions of their countrymen who stayed in Portugal. In this very sense, we can say that some assimilation by the Portuguese is occurring in France. There is an educational convergence of the Portuguese migrants in France and the French.

Yearning, learning and conceding: (Some of) the reasons people change their childbearing intentions

People's childbearing intentions change over the course of their reproductive lives. These changes have been conceptualised as occurring in response to the realisation that an individual is unlikely to achieve his or her intended fertility, because of constraints such as the biological clock or lack of a partner. In this paper we find that changes to childbearing plans are actually influenced by a much wider range of factors than this. People change their plans in response to the wishes of their partners, in response to social norms, as the result of re-partnering, and as the result of learning about the costs and benefits of parenthood; there are also differences between the factors which influence men's and women's decision-making. A key feature of this paper is that, in a departure from existing studies in this area, we use a flexible analytical framework which enables us to analyse increases in planned fertility separately from decreases. This allows us to uncover several complexities of the decision-making process which would otherwise be hidden, and leads us to conclude that the determinants of increases in planned fertility are not simply equal and opposite to the determinants of decreases

Who delays childbearing? The relationships between fertility, education and personality traits

Using data from the British Household Panel Survey, this paper assesses the in uence of personality traits on the timing of motherhood and investigates whether, and in what way, personality traits can explain the differences in maternity timing between more and less educated women. We estimate a log-logistic model of the time to first child birth and show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the Big Five personality traits and timing to motherhood. The results also show that within the more educated group, women who have an average to high score on Openness have lower hazards of childbirth

The Paradigmatic Complementary Model is an integrative model which conceptualizes seven pairs of Dialectical Psychological Needs (Vasco 2009 a, 2009b), and which conceives Well-Being as a result of regulation of the satisfaction of psychological needs, through a continuous process of negotiation and balance between both polarities of needs. This study focuses one of these needs - Exploration/Tranquillity. Grounded on the literature of Exploration and Tranquillity, it was built a scale to evaluate the degree of regulation of both poles of this need, which was applied to 562 participants through a Web platform. Later on, these results were related to the results obtained on a scale that measures Psychological Well- Being and Psychological Distress, belonging to the Mental Health Inventory (Ribeiro, 2001). The participants were divided into four groups based on the median of the pairs of results from Exploration and Tranquillity, where the group with higher results on both poles shows higher results of Psychological Well-Being and lower results of Psychological Distress. On conclusion it was also presented some limitations of the study and the implications for general psychology and psychotherapy

Journalism produces and disseminates information in society influencing it in thinking about and what to think. Through the media framework, methodology used in communication studies, one can see how it gives the communication strategies used by different media vehicles to disseminate information on economic journalism regarding the base interested rate: Selic. One should take into account that in economic journalism, as well as other professional groups, social relations exert interests and power relations. Thus, this dissertation investigates the different communication strategies present in the economic journalism discourse in Brazil in the newspaper O Globo, Folha de São Paulo, the State of São Paulo and Valor Economico. To answer the problem that this proposed work, we sought to answer the following questions: What are the most recurrent journalistic genres in the field over the Selic? To which social agents that the media gives voice? And what are the categories most frequently cited in the field of economy over the Selic? What is the predominant framing over the Selic rate?. The strategies used by vehicles directly affect the way of publishing information on the Selic interest rate to the same content can be given different approaches. Since the communication strategies used by the media are defined by the vehicle profile and the public one wants to affect.O jornalismo produz e dissemina informações na sociedade influenciando-a na forma de pensar e sobre o quê pensar.

The morphofunctional design of Montealtosuchus arrudacamposi (Crocodyliformes, Upper Cretaceous) of the Bauru Basin, Brazil

Montealtosuchus arrudacamposi, a Peirosauridae from the Upper Cretaceous of the Bauru Basin, was a Crocodyliformes of terrestrial habits. The fossils analyzed in this study belong to the pectoral girdle (scapula and coracoid) and anterior appendicular skeleton (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, radiale, ulnale, metacarpals and phalanges). In this study we infer the locomotion habits of M. arrudacamposi. A morphometric, morphofunctional and 3D reconstruction of the elements of the pectoral girdle and the anterior limbs of M. arrudacamposi were performed. For a better understanding of the most plausible pectoral girdle and anterior limb posture, the studied bones were virtually disarticulated and articulated on 3D reconstruction. The herein results obtained indicate the structures present a relatively thin and elongated aspect, thus allowing an interpretation that M. arrudacamposi possessed more slender anterior limbs than living crocodyliforms. This condition allowed for an adducted stance and cursorial habits that would enable movement through terrestrial environments for prey searching
