In the crystal structure of the title compound, C9H8O3, essentially planar molecules [the carboxyl group makes a dihedral angle of 4.53 (7)° with the plane of the ring, while the acid group forms a dihedral angle of 3.45 (8)° to the ring] aggregate by centrosymmetric hydrogen-bond pairing of ordered carboxyl groups. This yields dimers which have two orientations in a unit cell, creating a herringbone pattern. In addition, two close C—H⋯O intermolecular contacts exist: one is between a methyl H atom and the ketone of a symmetry-related molecule and the other involves a benzene H atom and the carboxyl group O atom of another molecule. The crystal studied was a non-merohedral twin with twin law [100, 00, 0] and a domain ratio of 0.8104(14): 0.1896(14)

In the title compound, [Pd(CH3)Cl(C24H20NPS)], the PdII ion is coordinated in a distorted square-planar environment which includes the P and N atoms of the bis-chelating ligand. The thiophene ring is rotationally ordered, unlike in the majority of crystal structures containing this group

    Chlorido{N-[2-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzylidene]-2-(2-thienyl)ethanamine-κ2 N,P}methylpalladium(II) dichloromethane hemisolvate

In the title compound, [Pd(CH3)Cl(C25H22NPS)]·0.5C2H2Cl2, the PdII atom is coordinated by the N,P-bidentate ligand, a methyl group and a chloride ion, generating a distorted square-planar PdCClNS coordination geometry, with the N and Cl atoms trans. The thiophene ring is equally disordered over two orientations and the dichloromethane solvent molecule is disordered about an inversion centre

    Dichloridobis[(ferrocenylmethylidene)(furan-2-ylmethyl)amine-κN]palladium(II)

The title compound, [Fe2Pd(C5H5)2(C11H10NO)2Cl2], exhibits a square-planar geometry at the PdII atom, which is determined by inversion-related chlorine and ferrocenylimine molecules across a center of symmetry. The ferrocenylimine moieties are trans to each other

An Automated Method to Quantify Microglia Morphology and Application to Monitor Activation State Longitudinally In Vivo

    Get PDF
Microglia are specialized immune cells of the brain. Upon insult, microglia initiate a cascade of cellular responses including a characteristic change in cell morphology. To study the dynamics of microglia immune response in situ, we developed an automated image analysis method that enables the quantitative assessment of microglia activation state within tissue based solely on cell morphology. Per cell morphometric analysis of fluorescently labeled microglia is achieved through local iterative threshold segmentation, which reduces errors caused by signal-to-noise variation across large volumes. We demonstrate, utilizing systemic application of lipopolysaccharide as a model of immune challenge, that several morphological parameters, including cell perimeter length, cell roundness and soma size, quantitatively distinguish resting versus activated populations of microglia within tissue comparable to traditional immunohistochemistry methods. Furthermore, we provide proof-of-concept data that monitoring soma size enables the longitudinal assessment of microglia activation in the mouse neocortex imaged via 2-photon in vivo microscopy. The ability to quantify microglia activation automatically by shape alone allows unbiased and rapid analysis of both fixed and in vivo central nervous system tissue

Permanent Campaigning: A Meta-Analysis and Framework for Measurement

    Get PDF
Permanent campaigning emerged as a concept in the 1970s in studies of US politics but is now recognized as a universal phenomenon. Despite its long history, there has been no attempt to build a holistic picture of the elements that constitute a permanent campaign. Generally, researchers focus on tactical elements, situating their use within an overall strategy, but there is a lack of a broader methodological framework for holistically measuring adherence to the permanent campaigning. This article presents results of a meta-analysis of relevant research to provide a framework to understand how permanent campaigning is practiced. Our study showed there were three reasonably discrete forms of campaigning activities that had been identified: those in which permanent campaign strategies are related to capacity building and strategy; a second, in which permanent campaigning relates to paid and owned media; and a third in which earned media is the main focus. In mapping these studies, we identify the common features of permanent campaigning, identifying strong and weak indicators and the extent these are employed by the government, parties, or elected representatives and within which political systems: parliamentarism or presidentialism. Our framework can be applied in future comparative research to understand trends in political communication

Imino-phospine palladium (II) and platinum (II) complexes: Synthesis, molecular structures and evaluation as antitumor agents

    Get PDF
The imino-phosphine ligands L1 and L2 were prepared via condensation reaction of 2-(diphenylphosphino) benzaldehyde with substituted anilines and obtained in very good yields. An equimolar reaction of L1 and L2 with either PdCl2(cod) or PtCl2(cod) gave new palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes 1–4. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of 2, 3 and 4 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. All the three molecular structures crystallized in monoclinic C2/c space system. The coordination geometry around the palladiumand platinumatoms in respective structures exhibited distorted square planar geometry at the metal centers. The complexes were evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxic activity against human breast (MCF-7) and human colon (HT-29) cancer cells, and they exhibited growth inhibitory activities and selectivity that were superior to the standard compound cisplatin.Web of Scienc

Including Pathogen Risk in Life Cycle Assessment of Wastewater Management. 1. Estimating the Burden of Disease Associated with Pathogens

    Get PDF
The environmental performance of wastewater and sewage sludge management is commonly assessed using life cycle assessment (LCA), whereas pathogen risk is evaluated with quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). This study explored the application of QMRA methodology with intent to include pathogen risk in LCA and facilitate a comparison with other potential impacts on human health considered in LCA. Pathogen risk was estimated for a model wastewater treatment system (WWTS) located in an industrialized country and consisting of primary, secondary, and tertiary wastewater treatment, anaerobic sludge digestion, and land application of sewage sludge. The estimation was based on eight previous QMRA studies as well as parameter values taken from the literature. A total pathogen risk (expressed as burden of disease) on the order of 0.2–9 disability-adjusted life years (DALY) per year of operation was estimated for the model WWTS serving 28 600 persons and for the pathogens and exposure pathways included in this study. The comparison of pathogen risk with other potential impacts on human health considered in LCA is detailed in part 2 of this article series
