Developing a performance evaluation scheme for engineering facilities in commercial buildings: state-of-the-art review
Various post-occupancy evaluation schemes have been introduced for assessing building performance but one tailored for large-scale commercial buildings remains to be seen. Intended to develop a scheme for evaluating the performance of engineering facilities in existing commercial buildings, a multi-stage study was carried out in a dense-built metropolis – Hong Kong. Reported here is the part of work based on an extensive literature review. Considering the characteristics of relevant evaluation schemes, the requirements for useful performance evaluation and the criteria for selecting key performance indicators (KPIs), an integrated process-hierarchy model was formed for identifying applicable indicators for the intended scheme. A total of 71 indicators, classified into five categories: (i) physical, (ii) financial, (iii) task and equipment related, (iv) environmental, and (v) health, safety and legal, were identified. Their representations and their empirical applications, which are helpful for the strategic management of existing buildings, are also described
Motives for online gaming questionnaire: Its psychometric properties and correlation with Internet gaming disorder symptoms among Chinese people
Internet gaming disorder (IGD) imposes a potential public health threat worldwide. Gaming motives are potentially salient factors of IGD, but research on Chinese gaming motives is scarce. This study empirically evaluated the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Motives for Online Gaming Questionnaire (C-MOGQ), the first inventory that measures seven different gaming motives applicable to all type of online games. We also investigated the associations between various gaming motives and IGD symptoms among Chinese gamers. Methods Three hundred and eighty-three Chinese adult online gamers (Mean age = 23.7 years) voluntarily completed our online, anonymous survey in December 2015. Results The confirmatory factor analysis results supported a bi-factor model with a general factor subsuming all C-MOGQ items (General Motivation) and seven uncorrelated domain-specific factors (Escape, Coping, Fantasy, Skill Development, Recreation, Competition, and Social). High internal consistencies of the overall scale and subscales were observed. The criterion-related validity of this Chinese version was also supported by the positive correlations of C-MOGQ scale scores with psychological need satisfaction and time spent gaming. Furthermore, we found that high General Motivation (coupled with high Escape motive and low Skill Development motive) was associated with more IGD symptoms reported by our Chinese participants. Discussion and conclusions Our findings demonstrated the utility of C-MOGQ in measuring gaming motives of Chinese online gamers, and we recommend the consideration of both its total score and subscale scores in future studies
Efficient hydrogen production from the lignocellulosic energy crop Miscanthus by the extreme thermophilic bacteria Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus and Thermotoga neapolitana
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The production of hydrogen from biomass by fermentation is one of the routes that can contribute to a future sustainable hydrogen economy. Lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive feedstock because of its abundance, low production costs and high polysaccharide content.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Batch cultures of <it>Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus </it>and <it>Thermotoga neapolitana </it>produced hydrogen, carbon dioxide and acetic acid as the main products from soluble saccharides in <it>Miscanthus </it>hydrolysate. The presence of fermentation inhibitors, such as furfural and 5-hydroxylmethyl furfural, in this lignocellulosic hydrolysate was avoided by the mild alkaline-pretreatment conditions at a low temperature of 75°C. Both microorganisms simultaneously and completely utilized all pentoses, hexoses and oligomeric saccharides up to a total concentration of 17 g l<sup>-1 </sup>in pH-controlled batch cultures. <it>T. neapolitana </it>showed a preference for glucose over xylose, which are the main sugars in the hydrolysate. Hydrogen yields of 2.9 to 3.4 mol H<sub>2 </sub>per mol of hexose, corresponding to 74 to 85% of the theoretical yield, were obtained in these batch fermentations. The yields were higher with cultures of <it>C</it>. <it>saccharolyticus </it>compared to <it>T. neapolitana</it>. In contrast, the rate of substrate consumption and hydrogen production was higher with <it>T. neapolitana</it>. At substrate concentrations exceeding 30 g l<sup>-1</sup>, sugar consumption was incomplete, and lower hydrogen yields of 2.0 to 2.4 mol per mol of consumed hexose were obtained.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Efficient hydrogen production in combination with simultaneous and complete utilization of all saccharides has been obtained during the growth of thermophilic bacteria on hydrolysate of the lignocellulosic feedstock <it>Miscanthus</it>. The use of thermophilic bacteria will therefore significantly contribute to the energy efficiency of a bioprocess for hydrogen production from biomass.</p
Self-Assembly of a Virus-Mimicking Nanostructure System for Efficient Tumor-Targeted Gene Delivery

However, delivery of molecular therapeutics efficiently and specifically to the target tissue remains a significant challenge. A human transferrin (Tf)-targeted cationic liposome-DNA complex, Tf-lipoplex, has shown high gene transfer efficiency and efficacy with human head and neck cancer in vitro and in vivo (Xu, L., Pirollo, K.F., Tang, W.H., Rait, A., and Chang, E.H. Hum. Gene Ther. 1999;10:2941-2952). Here we explore the structure, size, formation process, and structure-function relationships of Tf-lipoplex. We have observed Tf-lipoplex to have a highly compact structure, with a relatively uniform size of 50-90 nm. This nanostructure is novel in that it resembles a virus particle with a dense core enveloped by a membrane coated with Tf molecules spiking the surface. More importantly, compared with unliganded lipoplex, Tf-lipoplex shows enhanced stability, improved in vivo gene transfer efficiency, and long-term efficacy for systemic p53 gene therapy of human prostate cancer when used in combination with conventional radiotherapy. On the basis of our observations, we propose a multistep self-assembly process and Tf-facilitated DNA cocondensation model that may provide an explanation for the resultant small size and effectiveness of our nanostructural Tf-lipoplex system
Incidence, prevalence and prescription patterns of antipsychotic medications use in Asia and US: A cross-nation comparison with common data model
The use of antipsychotic medications (APMs) could be different among countries due to availability, approved indications, characteristics and clinical practice. However, there is limited literature providing comparisons of APMs use among countries. To examine trends in antipsychotic prescribing in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States, we conducted a cross-national study from 2002 to 2014 by using the distributed network approach with common data model. We included all patients who had at least a record of antipsychotic prescription in this study, and defined patients without previous exposure of antipsychotics for 6 months before the index date as new users for incidence estimation. We calculated the incidence, prevalence, and prescription rate of each medication by calendar year. Among older patients, sulpiride was the most incident [incidence rate (IR) 11.0-23.3) and prevalent [prevalence rate (PR) 11.9-14.3) APM in Taiwan, and most prevalent (PR 2.5-3.9) in Japan. Quetiapine and haloperidol were most common in the United States (IR 8.1-9.5; PR 18.0-18.4) and Hong Kong (PR 8.8-13.7; PR 10.6-12.7), respectively. The trend of quetiapine use was increasing in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the United States. As compared to older patients, the younger patients had more propensity to be prescribed second-generation APM for treatment in four countries. Trends in antipsychotic prescribing varied among countries. Quetiapine use was most prevalent in the United States and increasing in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The increasing use of quetiapine in the elderly patients might be due to its safety profile compared to other APMs
Derivation of continuum stochastic equations for discrete growth models
We present a formalism to derive the stochastic differential equations (SDEs)
for several solid-on-solid growth models. Our formalism begins with a mapping
of the microscopic dynamics of growth models onto the particle systems with
reactions and diffusion. We then write the master equations for these
corresponding particle systems and find the SDEs for the particle densities.
Finally, by connecting the particle densities with the growth heights, we
derive the SDEs for the height variables. Applying this formalism to discrete
growth models, we find the Edwards-Wilkinson equation for the symmetric
body-centered solid-on-solid (BCSOS) model, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation
for the asymmetric BCSOS model and the generalized restricted solid-on-solid
(RSOS) model, and the Villain--Lai--Das Sarma equation for the conserved RSOS
model. In addition to the consistent forms of equations for growth models, we

Exact diagonalization of the generalized supersymmetric t-J model with boundaries
We study the generalized supersymmetric model with boundaries in three
different gradings: FFB, BFF and FBF. Starting from the trigonometric R-matrix,
and in the framework of the graded quantum inverse scattering method (QISM), we
solve the eigenvalue problems for the supersymmetric model. A detailed
calculations are presented to obtain the eigenvalues and Bethe ansatz equations
of the supersymmetric model with boundaries in three different

Analysis of cod-liver oil adulteration using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
Analysis of the adulteration of cod-liver oil with much cheaper oil-like animal fats has become attractive in recent years. This study highlights an application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as a nondestructive and fast technique for the determination of adulterants in cod-liver oil. Attenuated total reflectance measurements were made on pure cod-liver oil and cod-liver oil adulterated with different concentrations of lard (0.5–50% v/v in cod-liver oil). A chemometrics partial least squares (PLS) calibration model was developed for quantitative measurement of the adulterant. Discriminant analysis method was used to classify cod-liver oil samples from common animal fats (beef, chicken, mutton, and lard) based on their infrared spectra. Discriminant analysis carried out using seven principal components was able to classify the samples as pure or adulterated cod-liver oil based on their FTIR spectra at the selected fingerprint regions (1,500–1,030 cm−1)
