    Musicians as Researchers - Insight or Insanity?

    In the current university context, many highly-proficient music performers enrol in higher education degrees by research. While at first glance those enrolled may seem to be moving from an area of expertise to an area of inexperience, in many cases the individual may in fact have already developed a range of research skills in the course of becoming highly proficient in their chosen field. Many expert musicians seek to further develop their craft through embarking on research degrees and/or seek inspiration through what they aim to discover. Research is a highly valued skill among many musicians pursuing fine music making. In this paper, we will investigate the motivations of musicians for enrolling in a higher degree by research, including the reasons why they choose research as a way of expanding their skills as performers, and the expected outcomes of their research studies

    Hippocampal IGF-1 expression, neurogenesis and slowed aging: clues to longevity from mutant mice

    Recent studies point out the important role of IGF and insulin-related signaling pathways in the control of longevity of laboratory animals. The Ames dwarf mouse is a murine model of circulating GH and IGF-1 deficiency that exhibits dwarf phenotype characteristics and significantly extends lifespan. It is interesting to know that Ames dwarf mice do not experience an age-related decline in cognitive function when compared to their young counterparts. In this study, the most recent works on local GH and IGF-1 expression in the hippocampus of Ames mice are briefly reviewed

    Deciphering Proteomic Signatures of Early Diapause in Nasonia

    Insect diapause is an alternative life-history strategy used to increase longevity and survival in harsh environmental conditions. Even though some aspects of diapause are well investigated, broader scale studies that elucidate the global metabolic adjustments required for this remarkable trait, are rare. In order to better understand the metabolic changes during early insect diapause, we used a shotgun proteomics approach on early diapausing and non-diapausing larvae of the recently sequenced hymenopteran model organism Nasonia vitripennis. Our results deliver insights into the molecular underpinnings of diapause in Nasonia and corroborate previously reported diapause-associated features for invertebrates, such as a diapause-dependent abundance change for heat shock and storage proteins. Furthermore, we observed a diapause-dependent switch in enzymes involved in glycerol synthesis and a vastly changed capacity for protein synthesis and degradation. The abundance of structural proteins and proteins involved in protein synthesis decreased with increasing diapause duration, while the abundance of proteins likely involved in diapause maintenance (e.g. ferritins) increased. Only few potentially diapause-specific proteins were identified suggesting that diapause in Nasonia relies to a large extent on a modulation of pre-existing pathways. Studying a diapause syndrome on a proteomic level rather than isolated pathways or physiological networks, has proven to be an efficient and successful avenue to understand molecular mechanisms involved in diapause

    Similar gene expression patterns characterize aging and oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster

    Affymetrix GeneChips were used to measure RNA abundance for ≈13,500 Drosophila genes in young, old, and 100% oxygen-stressed flies. Data were analyzed by using a recently developed background correction algorithm and a robust multichip model-based statistical analysis that dramatically increased the ability to identify changes in gene expression. Aging and oxidative stress responses shared the up-regulation of purine biosynthesis, heat shock protein, antioxidant, and innate immune response genes. Results were confirmed by using Northerns and transgenic reporters. Immune response gene promoters linked to GFP allowed longitudinal assay of gene expression during aging in individual flies. Immune reporter expression in young flies was partially predictive of remaining life span, suggesting their potential as biomonitors of aging
