The hydrolytic stability of various silane combinations and their effects on biomechanical properties and water sorption of an experimental dental composite made of bis-GMA and TEGDMA and silane-treated fillers were evaluated. Four silane coupling agents and their blends with a cross-linker silane were used as coupling agents for the 0.7-μm BaSiO 3 fillers. The silanization was carried out in toluene containing 1% (v/v) of one of the four following organofunctional silane coupling agents: 3- acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, 3methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, 3-styrylethyltrimethoxysilane and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane. Blends of these functional silanes with 1% (v/v) of a cross-linker silane, 1,2- bis -(triethoxysilyl)ethane were also used for silanization. Composites were prepared by mixing 5.00 g Ba-glass filler with 2.00 g of a resin mixture consisting of bis-GMA (58.8 wt%) and TEGDMA (39.2 wt%) in a high-speed mixer. Threepoint bending test specimens (2.0 mm × 2.0 mm × 25.0 mm) were fabricated (n= 8) in a mould and photo-polymerized. The degree of conversion was measured with FT-IR. Biomechanical testing was carried out according to the ISO 10477 standard. Specimens were tested (flexural strength) after 30 days of water storage (37° C, distilled water). Water sorption and solubility (in wt%) were also measured on 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days in water storage. Statistical analysis with ANOVA showed that the highest flexural strength was obtained when 3-acryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane + 1,2- bis -(triethoxysilyl) ethane (100.5 MPa; SD, 25.7 MPa) was used in the silanization step, and the lowest was obtained when 3isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane + 1,2- bis-(triethoxysilyl)ethane (28.9 MPa; SD, 8.8 MPa) was used. The three-point bending strength was significantly affected by the functionality of the main silane tested (p 0.05). The composite that had been silanized with 3- isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane had the greatest amount of water uptake (1.75%), and the composite silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane + 1,2- bis-(triethoxysilyl)ethane had the least (1.08%). In conclusion, selection of the functional silane monomer can be a significant factor in developing filled resin composites in dentistry. © 2011 VSP.postprin

Population dynamics, life stage and ecological modeling in Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

    Get PDF
In this study we investigated the population dynamics of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) with laboratory experiments, employing survival analysis and stage structure mathematical models, emphasizing survival among life stages. The study also assessed the theoretical influence of density dependence and cannibalism during immature stages, on the population dynamics of the species. The survival curves were similar, indicating that populations of C. albiceps exhibit the same pattern of survival among life stages. A strong nonlinear trend was observed, suggesting density dependence, acting during the first life stages of C. albiceps. The time-series simulations produced chaotic oscillations for all life stages, and the cannibalism did not produce qualitative changes in the dynamic behavior. The bifurcation analysis shows that for low values for survival, the population reaches a stable equilibrium, but the cannibalism results in chaotic oscillations practically over all the parametric space. The implications of the patterns of dynamic behavior observed are discussed.Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)WACGCNPqFAPES

Right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia worsened during pregnancy

We report the case of a 35 years old woman without underlying heart disease who was diagnosed with a right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia worsened during pregnancy. The diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia was made early in her pregnancy course but the patient had symptoms three months earlier. Her disease course was marked by rhythmic storms during the second trimester of pregnancy that led to three hospitalizations accounting for about two weeks in total. The combination of nadolol 80 mg and flecainide tablets 150 mg improved her rhythmic storms. Radiofrequency allowed a radical cure of this ventricular tachycardia. The patient is now asymptomatic 27 months after radiofrequency treatment

Vineyard protection with rain-shelter: relationships between radiometric properties of plastic covers and table grape quality

The rise of unpredictable, heavy rainfalls increases incidence of diseases, berry rot, berry cracking, and enhance the need for rain shelters. The influence of the type of rain shelter on microclimate and grape quality is still little explored. The aim of this trial was to investigate the radiometric properties of a new type of cover, its effect on vineyard microclimate and on table grape quality, as compared with a reference cover, during a vintage with unusually abundant precipitation for Southern Italy. The new cover was characterized by lower transmissivity to IRshort radiation, and by a very higher transmissivity to UV radiation. It showed a tendency to decrease air temperature by 1 °C, increase RH by 2–3%, reduce VPD, and improve vine water status with respect to the reference. At harvest, grapes covered with the new sheet had higher TSS concentration, TSS / TA ratio, total skin polyphenol and flavonoids content, and berry skin resistance to rupture. Those berries, moreover, increased the level of volatile compounds such as linalool, typical of ‘Italia’ muscat aroma, and terpineol

Primary Results From the Understanding Outcomes With the S-ICD in Primary Prevention Patients With Low Ejection Fraction (UNTOUCHED) Trial

BACKGROUND: The subcutaneous (S) implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is safe and effective for sudden cardiac death prevention. However, patients in previous S-ICD studies had fewer comorbidities, had less left ventricular dysfunction, and received more inappropriate shocks (IAS) than in typical transvenous ICD trials. The UNTOUCHED trial (Understanding Outcomes With the S-ICD in Primary Prevention Patients With Low Ejection Fraction) was designed to evaluate the IAS rate in a more typical, contemporary ICD patient population implanted with the S-ICD using standardized programming and enhanced discrimination algorithms. METHODS: Primary prevention patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35% and no pacing indications were included. Generation 2 or 3 S-ICD devices were implanted and programmed with rate-based therapy delivery for rates ≥250 beats per minute and morphology discrimination for rates ≥200 and <250 beats per minute. Patients were followed for 18 months. The primary end point was the IAS-free rate compared with a 91.6% performance goal, derived from the results for the ICD-only patients in the MADIT-RIT study (Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial-Reduce Inappropriate Therapy). Kaplan-Meier analyses were performed to evaluate event-free rates for IAS, all-cause shock, and complications. Multivariable proportional hazard analysis was performed to determine predictors of end points. RESULTS: S-ICD implant was attempted in 1116 patients, and 1111 patients were included in postimplant follow-up analysis. The cohort had a mean age of 55.8±12.4 years, 25.6% were women, 23.4% were Black, 53.5% had ischemic heart disease, 87.7% had symptomatic heart failure, and the mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 26.4±5.8%. Eighteen-month freedom from IAS was 95.9% (lower confidence limit, 94.8%). Predictors of reduced incidence of IAS were implanting the most recent generation of device, using the 3-incision technique, no history of atrial fibrillation, and ischemic cause. The 18-month all-cause shock-free rate was 90.6% (lower confidence limit, 89.0%), meeting the prespecified performance goal of 85.8%. Conversion success rate for appropriate, discrete episodes was 98.4%. Complication-free rate at 18 months was 92.7%. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates high efficacy and safety with contemporary S-ICD devices and programming despite the relatively high incidence of comorbidities in comparison with earlier S-ICD trials. The inappropriate shock rate (3.1% at 1 year) is the lowest reported for the S-ICD and lower than many transvenous ICD studies using contemporary programming to reduce IAS. Mechanical, thermal and tribological properties of polyimide/nano-SiO2 composites synthesized using an in-situ polymerization

    Get PDF
Polyimide (PI)/nano-SiO2 composites were successfully fabricated via a novel in-situ polymerization. Microstructure, thermal properties, mechanical performance and tribological behaviors of these composites were investigated. The results indicate that nano-SiO2 dispersed homogeneously. Compared with pure PI, thermal stability and heat resistance are higher about 10 °C with the addition of 5 wt% nano-SiO2. Compressive strength and modulus of composite with 5 wt% nano-SiO2 increase by 42.6 and 45.2%, respectively. The coefficient of friction (COF) of composite with 5 wt% nano-SiO2 decrease by 6.8% owing to the thick and uniform transfer films. Excess nano-SiO2 could adversely affect the COF of PI/nano-SiO2 composite. Additionally, wear resistance deteriorates obviously since transfer film exfoliates easily and nano-SiO2 aggregates on the surface of transfer films
