Distributed lightning monitoring: an affordable proposal
In theaters and the filmmaking industry, video streams, images, audio streams and
scalar data are commonly used. In these fields, one of the most important magnitudes to be
collected and controlled is the light intensity in different scene spots. So, it is extremely
important to be able to deploy a network of light sensors which are usually integrated in a more
general Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). If many light measurements have to
be acquired, the simpler and cheaper the sensor, the more affordable theWMSN will be. In this
paper we propose the use of a set of very cheap light sensors (photodiodes) and to spectrally
and directionally correct their measurements using mathematical methods. A real testing of the
proposed solution has been accomplished, obtaining quite accurate light measurements.
Testing results are also presented throughout the paper.Telefonica Chair "Intelligence in Networks" of the University of Seville (Spain
Conceptual Framework for the Use of Building Information Modeling in Engineering Education
The objective of this paper is to present a critical literature review of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologyandtoanalyzewhetherBIMcanbeconsideredaVirtualLearningEnvironment.Aconceptualframeworkis proposed for using BIM in a university context. A search of documents was carried out in the Core Collection of Web of Science; it was restricted to the last five years (2013–2017). A total of 95 documents were analyzed; all documents were written in English and peer reviewed. BIM meets all the characteristics of Virtual Learning Environments. The proposed framework has three dimensions (competencies, pedagogical approach and level of integration). It allows for the planning and analysis of future experiences of teaching BIM in a university context.Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain and AEI/FEDER, UE Projects EDU2016-77007-RRegional Government of Extremadura (Spain) IB 16068Regional Government of Extremadura (Spain) GR1800
Temporally-aware algorithms for the classification of anuran sounds
Several authors have shown that the sounds of anurans can be used as an indicator of
climate change. Hence, the recording, storage and further processing of a huge
number of anuran sounds, distributed over time and space, are required in order to
obtain this indicator. Furthermore, it is desirable to have algorithms and tools for
the automatic classification of the different classes of sounds. In this paper, six
classification methods are proposed, all based on the data-mining domain, which
strive to take advantage of the temporal character of the sounds. The definition and
comparison of these classification methods is undertaken using several approaches.
The main conclusions of this paper are that: (i) the sliding window method attained
the best results in the experiments presented, and even outperformed the hidden
Markov models usually employed in similar applications; (ii) noteworthy overall
classification performance has been obtained, which is an especially striking result
considering that the sounds analysed were affected by a highly noisy background;
(iii) the instance selection for the determination of the sounds in the training dataset
offers better results than cross-validation techniques; and (iv) the temporally-aware
classifiers have revealed that they can obtain better performance than their nontemporally-aware
counterparts.Consejería de Innovación, Ciencia y Empresa (Junta de Andalucía, Spain): excellence eSAPIENS number TIC 570
Low cost multimedia sensor networks for obtaining lighting maps
In many applications, video streams, images, audio streams and scalar data are
commonly used. In these fields, one of the most important magnitudes to be collected and
controlled is the light intensity in different spots. So, it is extremely important to be able to
deploy a network of light sensors which are usually integrated in a more general Wireless
Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). Light control systems have increasing applications in
many places like streets, roads, buildings, theaters, etc. In these situations having a dense grid
of sensing spots significantly enhances measuring precision and control performance. When a
great number of measuring spots are required, the cost of the sensor becomes a very important
concern. In this paper the use of very low cost light sensors is proposed and it is shown how to
overcome its limited performance by directionally correcting its results. A correction factor is
derived for several lighting conditions. The proposed method is firstly applied to measure light
in a single spot. Additionally a prototype of a sensor network is employed to draw the lighting
map of a surface. Finally the sensor grid is employed to estimate the position and power of a
set of light sources in a certain region of interest (street, building,…). These three applications
have shown that using low cost sensors instead of luxmeters is a feasible approach to estimate
illuminance levels in a room and to derive light sources maps. The obtained error measuring
spots illuminance or estimating lamp emittances are quite acceptable in many practical
applications.Telefonica Chair "Intelligence in Networks" of the University of Seville (Spain
Enhanced manufacturing storage management using data mining prediction techniques
Performing an efficient storage management is a key issue for reducing costs in the manufacturing process. And the first step to accomplish this task is to have good estimations of the consumption of every storage component.
For making accurate consumption estimations two main approaches are possible: using past utilization values (time series); and/or considering other external factors affecting the spending rates.
Time series forecasting is the most common approach due to the fact that not always is clear the causes affecting consumption. Several classical methods have extensively been used, mainly ARIMA models.
As an alternative, in this paper it is proposed to use prediction techniques based on the data mining realm.
The use of consumption prediction algorithms clearly increases the storage management efficiency. The predictors based on data mining can offer enhanced solutions in many cases.Telefónica, through the “Cátedra de Telefónica Inteligencia en la Red”Paloma Luna Garrid
El ciclo vital revisado: las vidas de las mujeres mayores a la luz de los cambios sociales
Explaining the human lifecycle has been radically changed due to the increase in life expectancy. With regard to women, the aging process involves distinctive elements that are deeply rooted in the social changes of the last fifty years. Given the features of women’s lives and their numerous variations among individuals, the analysis of their experience becomes challenging when performed in terms of classic evolutionary psychology. The women living the aging process in the coming twenty years will benefit from the new feminist positions; they will be confronted with aging after having experienced work, economics, family, power and status positions that differ from those of their predecessors. Thus, they will have more financial, social and intellectual resources at their disposalEl aumento de la esperanza de vida ha revolucionado la explicación del ciclo vital humano.
State of the Industry 4.0 in the Andalusian food sector
The food industry is a key issue in the economic structure of Andalusia, due to both the weight and position of this industry in the economy and its advantages and potentials.
The term Industry 4.0 carries many meanings. It seeks to describe the intelligent factory, with all the processes interconnected by Internet of things (IOT). Early advances in this field have involved the incorporation of greater flexibility and individualization of the manufacturing processes.
The implementation of the framework proposed by Industry 4.0. is a need for the industry in general, and for Andalusian food industry in particular, and should be seen as a great opportunity of progress for the sector. It is expected that, along with others, the food and beverage industry will be pioneer in the adoption of flexible and individualized manufacturing processes.
This work constitutes the state of the art, through bibliographic review, of the application of the proposed paradigm by the Industry 4.0. to the food industry.Telefónica, through the “Cátedra de Telefónica Inteligencia en la Red”Paloma Luna Garrid
