Finite-size scaling considerations on the ground state microcanonical temperature in entropic sampling simulations
In this work we discuss the behavior of the microcanonical temperature
obtained by means of numerical entropic
sampling studies. It is observed that in almost all cases the slope of the
logarithm of the density of states is not infinite in the ground state,
since as expected it should be directly related to the inverse temperature
. Here we show that these finite slopes are in fact due to
finite-size effects and we propose an analytic expression for the
behavior of when . To
test this idea we use three distinct two-dimensional square lattice models
presenting second-order phase transitions. We calculated by exact means the
parameters and for the two-states Ising model and for the and
states Potts model and compared with the results obtained by entropic sampling
simulations. We found an excellent agreement between exact and numerical
values. We argue that this new set of parameters and represents an
interesting novel issue of investigation in entropic sampling studies for
different models
General Form of the Color Potential Produced by Color Charges of the Quark

Recognition of Face Identity and Emotion in Expressive Specific Language Impairment
Objective: To study face and emotion recognition in children with mostly expressive specific language impairment (SLI-E). Subjects and Methods: A test movie to study perception and recognition of faces and mimic-gestural expression was applied to 24 children diagnosed as suffering from SLI-E and an age-matched control group of normally developing children. Results: Compared to a normal control group, the SLI-E children scored significantly worse in both the face and expression recognition tasks with a preponderant effect on emotion recognition. The performance of the SLI-E group could not be explained by reduced attention during the test session. Conclusion: We conclude that SLI-E is associated with a deficiency in decoding non-verbal emotional facial and gestural information, which might lead to profound and persistent problems in social interaction and development. Gauge invariant definition of the jet quenching parameter
In the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, the jet quenching
parameter, , has been evaluated by adding the effect of Glauber gluon
interactions to the propagation of a highly-energetic collinear parton in a
medium. The result, which holds in covariant gauges, has been expressed in
terms of the expectation value of two Wilson lines stretching along the
direction of the four-momentum of the parton. In this paper, we show how that
expression can be generalized to an arbitrary gauge by the addition of
transverse Wilson lines. The transverse Wilson lines are explicitly computed by
resumming interactions of the parton with Glauber gluons that appear only in
non-covariant gauges. As an application of our result, we discuss the
contribution to coming from transverse momenta of order in a
medium that is a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures; journal versio
Taxonomic Chauvinism Revisited: Insight from Parental Care Research
Parental care (any non-genetic contribution by a parent that appears likely to increase the fitness of its offspring) is a widespread trait exhibited by a broad range of animal taxa. In addition to influencing the fitness of parent(s) and offspring, parental care may be inextricably involved in other evolutionary processes, such as sexual selection and the evolution of endothermy. Yet, recent work has demonstrated that bias related to taxonomy is prevalent across many biological disciplines, and research in parental care may be similarly burdened. Thus, I used parental care articles published in six leading journals of fundamental behavioral sciences (Animal Behaviour, Behavioral Ecology, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, Ethology, Hormones and Behavior, and Physiology & Behavior) from 2001–2010 (n = 712) to examine the year-to-year dynamics of two types of bias related to taxonomy across animals: (1) taxonomic bias, which exists when research output is not proportional to the frequency of organisms in nature, and (2) taxonomic citation bias, which is a proxy for the breadth of a given article—specifically, the proportion of articles cited that refer solely to the studied taxon. I demonstrate that research on birds likely represents a disproportionate amount of parental care research and, thus, exhibits taxonomic bias. Parental care research on birds and mammals also refers to a relatively narrow range of taxonomic groups when discussing its context and, thus, exhibits taxonomic citation bias. Further, the levels of taxonomic bias and taxonomic citation bias have not declined over the past decade despite cautionary messages about similar bias in related disciplines— in fact, taxonomic bias may have increased. As in Bonnet et al. (2002), my results should not be interpreted as evidence of an ‘ornithological Mafia’ conspiring to suppress other taxonomic groups. Rather, I generate several rational hypotheses to determine why bias persists and to guide future work
Gross-Neveu Models, Nonlinear Dirac Equations, Surfaces and Strings
Recent studies of the thermodynamic phase diagrams of the Gross-Neveu model
(GN2), and its chiral cousin, the NJL2 model, have shown that there are phases
with inhomogeneous crystalline condensates. These (static) condensates can be
found analytically because the relevant Hartree-Fock and gap equations can be
reduced to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, whose deformations are
governed by the mKdV and AKNS integrable hierarchies, respectively. Recently,
Thies et al have shown that time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions describing
baryon scattering in the massless GN2 model satisfy the Sinh-Gordon equation,
and can be mapped directly to classical string solutions in AdS3. Here we
propose a geometric perspective for this result, based on the generalized
Weierstrass spinor representation for the embedding of 2d surfaces into 3d
spaces, which explains why these well-known integrable systems underlie these
various Gross-Neveu gap equations, and why there should be a connection to
classical string theory solutions. This geometric viewpoint may be useful for
higher dimensional models, where the relevant integrable hierarchies include
the Davey-Stewartson and Novikov-Veselov systems.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figur

The generalized Weinberg sum rules containing the difference of isovector
vector and axial-vector spectral functions saturated by both finite and
infinite number of narrow resonances are considered. We summarize the status of

Lagrangians, low-energy relations, parity doubling, hadron string models, and

Dealing with Feelings: Characterization of Trait Alexithymia on Emotion Regulation Strategies and Cognitive-Emotional Processing
Background: Alexithymia, or "no words for feelings'', is a personality trait which is associated with difficulties in emotion recognition and regulation. It is unknown whether this deficit is due primarily to regulation, perception, or mentalizing of emotions. In order to shed light on the core deficit, we tested our subjects on a wide range of emotional tasks. We expected the high alexithymics to underperform on all tasks. Method: Two groups of healthy individuals, high and low scoring on the cognitive component of the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire, completed questionnaires of emotion regulation and performed several emotion processing tasks including a micro expression recognition task, recognition of emotional prosody and semantics in spoken sentences, an emotional and identity learning task and a conflicting beliefs and emotions task (emotional mentalizing). Results: The two groups differed on the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire and Empathy Quotient. Specifically, the Emotion Regulation Quotient showed that alexithymic individuals used more suppressive and less reappraisal strategies. On the behavioral tasks, as expected, alexithymics performed worse on recognition of micro expressions and emotional mentalizing. Surprisingly, groups did not differ on tasks of emotional semantics and prosody and associative emotional-learning. Conclusion: Individuals scoring high on the cognitive component of alexithymia are more prone to suppressive emotion regulation strategies rather than reappraisal strategies. Regarding emotional information processing, alexithymia is associated with reduced performance on measures of early processing as well as higher order mentalizing. However, difficulties in the processing of emotional language were not a core deficit in our alexithymic group
Effects among healthy subjects of the duration of regularly practicing a guided imagery program
BACKGROUND: We examined a large number of healthy adults in the general community who had individually participated in a guided imagery (GI) program daily and for various durations, to examine the psychophysiological effects of a GI program within a healthy group. METHODS: We studied 176 subjects who had participated in sessions that were part of a guided imagery program, and who had practiced GI at home for 20 minutes once daily in a quiet place after mastering GI in the group sessions. The average duration of GI practiced at home was 6.88 ± 14.06 months (n = 138, range: 0 to 72). The Multiple Mood Scale (MMS), Betts (1909) Shortened Questionnaire on Mental Imagery (QMI), and a visual analog scale (VAS) of imagery vividness, salivary cortisol (C(S)) levels, general stress and general health were used in the sessions. RESULTS: We examined the relationship between the duration of daily GI practiced at home and MMS, QMI, C(S), general health, and general stress at baseline. The subjects who had practiced GI at home longer had lower negative mood scores at baseline and lower severity of stress, and higher positive mood at baseline (both at a session and at home), general health, and QMI scores at baseline. The MMS change during a session and the duration of daily GI practiced at home were not correlated. Repeated-measures analysis of covariance showed that the duration of daily GI practiced as the covariate was not associated with changes in the three C(S )levels. CONCLUSION: Although regularly practicing a GI program daily for 20 min did not affect the C(S )level or mood during a GI session for several hours, it kept a good condition of the general mental, physical well-being and their overall stress of the practitioners as they had practiced it for long duration. We postulate that subjects who have the high ability of imaging vividness showed the better mood, health status and less stress than those subjects who have the low ability of it did. The ability of image vividness of the long-term regular practitioners of GI was higher than its short-term or inexperienced practitioners, which allowed practitioners to produce more comfortable imagery. Consequently, the longer the duration that they had practiced GI program once a day regularly, the lower scores of their stress were and the higher scores of their health were. We suggest that the regular daily practice of a GI program might be connected to less stress and better health
Fluorescent Labeling of Newborn Dentate Granule Cells in GAD67-GFP Transgenic Mice: A Genetic Tool for the Study of Adult Neurogenesis
Neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus is an important form of structural plasticity in the brain. Here we report a line of BAC transgenic mice (GAD67-GFP mice) that selectively and transitorily express GFP in newborn dentate granule cells of the adult hippocampus. These GFP+ cells show a high degree of colocalization with BrdU-labeled nuclei one week after BrdU injection and express the newborn neuron marker doublecortin and PSA-NCAM. Compared to mature dentate granule cells, these newborn neurons show immature morphological features: dendritic beading, fewer dendritic branches and spines. These GFP+ newborn neurons also show immature electrophysiological properties: higher input resistance, more depolarized resting membrane potentials, small and non-typical action potentials. The bright labeling of newborn neurons with GFP makes it possible to visualize the details of dendrites, which reach the outer edge of the molecular layer, and their axon (mossy fiber) terminals, which project to the CA3 region where they form synaptic boutons. GFP expression covers the whole developmental stage of newborn neurons, beginning within the first week of cell division and disappearing as newborn neurons mature, about 4 weeks postmitotic. Thus, the GAD67-GFP transgenic mice provide a useful genetic tool for studying the development and regulation of newborn dentate granule cells
