Fabrication of stable Pd nanowire assisted by hydrogen in solution
We have mechanically fabricated a Pd nanowire in solution under
electrochemical potential control. A clear feature appeared in the conductance
histogram when the electrochemical potential of the Pd wire was kept at the
hydrogen evolution potential. Conductance traces showed the Pd wire was
stretched 0.4 nm in length just before breaking, suggesting that at least two
Pd atoms might contribute to the formation of the Pd wire. The results indicate
that a certain atomic configuration of the Pd nanowire is stabilized by
hydrogen. We discuss the stabilization mechanism due to changes in bond

Observation of Macroscopic Structural Fluctuations in bcc Solid 4He
We report neutron diffraction studies of low density bcc and hcp solid 4He.
In the bcc phase, we observed a continuous dynamical behaviour involving
macroscopic structural changes of the solid. The dynamical behaviour takes
place in a cell full of solid, and therefore represents a solidsolid
transformation. The structural changes are consistent with a gradual rotation
of macroscopic grains separated by low angle grain boundaries. We suggest that
these changes are triggered by random momentary vibrations of the experimental
system. An analysis of Laue diffraction patterns indicates that in some cases
these structural changes, once initiated by a momentary impulse, seem to
proceed at a constant rate over times approaching an hour. The energy
associated with these macroscopic changes appears to be on the order of kT.
Under similar conditions (temperature and pressure), these effects were absent

Broadband enhancement of thermal radiation

However, due to the difficulty in simultaneously achieving high absorptivity and low thermal mass these sources are inefficient. We show a platform that enables one to obtain enhanced emission by coupling a thermal emitter to an optical cavity. We experimentally demonstrate broadband enhancement of thermal emission between lambda similar to 2 - 4.2 mu m using an inherently poor thermal emitter consisting of tens of nanometers thick SiC film with 10% emissivity (epsilon(S)(iC) similar to 0.1). We measure over twofold enhancement of total emission power over the entire spectral band and threefold enhancement of thermal emission over 3 to 3.4 mu m. Deformable Model for 3D Intramodal Nonrigid Breast Image Registration with Fiducial Skin Markers
We implemented a new approach to intramodal non-rigid 3D breast image registration. Our method uses fiducial skin markers (FSM) placed on the breast surface. After determining the displacements of FSM, finite element method (FEM) is used to distribute the markers’ displacements linearly over the entire breast volume using the analogy between the orthogonal components of the displacement field and a steady state heat transfer (SSHT). It is valid because the displacement field in x, y and z direction and a SSHT problem can both be modeled using LaPlace’s equation and the displacements are analogous to temperature differences in SSHT. It can be solved via standard heat conduction FEM software with arbitrary conductivity of surface elements significantly higher than that of volume elements. After determining the displacements of the mesh nodes over the entire breast volume, moving breast volume is registered to target breast volume using an image warping algorithm. Very good quality of the registration was obtained. Following similarity measurements were estimated: Normalized Mutual Information (NMI), Normalized Correlation Coefficient (NCC) and Sum of Absolute Valued Differences (SAVD). Perfect imaging: they don't do it with mirrors
Imaging with a spherical mirror in empty space is compared with the case when
the mirror is filled with the medium of Maxwell's fish eye. Exact
time-dependent solutions of Maxwell's equations show that perfect imaging is
not achievable with an electrical ideal mirror on its own, but with Maxwell's
fish eye in the regime when it implements a curved geometry for full
electromagnetic waves
Effective Soft-Core Potentials and Mesoscopic Simulations of Binary Polymer Mixtures
Mesoscopic molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the large
scale structure of several binary polymer mixtures of various chemical
architecture, concentration, and thermodynamic conditions. By implementing an
analytical formalism, which is based on the solution to the Ornstein-Zernike
equation, each polymer chain is mapped onto the level of a single soft colloid.
From the appropriate closure relation, the effective, soft-core potential
between coarse-grained units is obtained and used as input to our mesoscale
simulations. The potential derived in this manner is analytical and explicitly
parameter dependent, making it general and transferable to numerous systems of
interest. From computer simulations performed under various thermodynamic
conditions the structure of the polymer mixture, through pair correlation
functions, is determined over the entire miscible region of the phase diagram.
In the athermal regime mesoscale simulations exhibit quantitative agreement
with united atom simulations. Furthermore, they also provide information at
larger scales than can be attained by united atom simulations and in the
thermal regime approaching the phase transition.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 table
Morphological communication: exploiting coupled dynamics in a complex mechanical structure to achieve locomotion
Traditional engineering approaches strive to avoid, or actively suppress, nonlinear dynamic coupling among components. Biological systems, in contrast, are often rife with these dynamics. Could there be, in some cases, a benefit to high degrees of dynamical coupling? Here we present a distributed robotic control scheme inspired by the biological phenomenon of tensegrity-based mechanotransduction. This emergence of morphology-as-information-conduit or ‘morphological communication’, enabled by time-sensitive spiking neural networks, presents a new paradigm for the decentralized control of large, coupled, modular systems. These results significantly bolster, both in magnitude and in form, the idea of morphological computation in robotic control. Furthermore, they lend further credence to ideas of embodied anatomical computation in biological systems, on scales ranging from cellular structures up to the tendinous networks of the human hand
Assessment of performance indices of selected gas turbine power plants in Nigeria
In this study, performance assessment of selected gas turbine power plants in Nigeria was evaluated using performance indices. The results of the study showed that for the period under review (2006–2010), the percentage shortfalls from the target energy in the selected power plants range from 26.33% to 86.61% as against the acceptable value of 5–10%. The capacity factor of the selected power plants varies from 16.88% to 73.67% as against the international value of 50–80%. The plant use factor varies from 45.89% to 97.03% and the utilization factor varies from 6.31% to 93.074% as against the international best practice of over 95%. From this result, it can be concluded that
the generating units were underutilized. This is due to inadequate routine maintenance and equipment fault development. The analyses of reliability indicators revealed that the mean time between failures varies from 5.42 to
378.44 h, the mean time to repair varies from 18.3 to 153.88 h and the plant availability varies from 12.86% to 91.31% as against the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers recommended standard of 99.9%. Evaluation of
operating figures of the selected power plants revealed that starting reliability (SR) and operating reliability vary from 71.95% to 93.9% and 5.33% to 55%, respectively. The SR of the selected power plants is low in value compared
with standard value of 99.9%. The statistical analysis carried out on plant availability revealed that at 95% confidence level; there is a significant difference in availability of the selected power plants. This indicates differences in their systems installation, operation and maintenance. The performance indicator developed to evaluate the performance indices for the selected stations can also be applicable to other power stations in Nigeria and elsewhere. Measures to improve the performance indices of the plants have been suggested in this paper

Colonial-era administrative institutions and doctrines are fundamental to any analysis of Westminster’s legacy in the Caribbean. Applying the lens of ‘Public Service Bargains’ (PSBs) – the formal and informal understandings of reward, competence and loyalty of public servants –we first examine constitutional and administrative doctrines regarding the public service of Crown Colonies, before analysing how these worked themselves out in Jamaica. Our analysis reveals a number of perceived deficiencies in the PSB in the pre-independence period that cast a shadow on future relations in the post-independence period
