    Intraosseous Hemangioma of the Middle Turbinate Misdiagnosed As a Nasal Polyp

    Intraosseous hemangiomas account for 1% of all bone tumors and primarily originate from the vertebral column and skull bones. However, intraosseous hemangiomas of the nasal cavity are extremely rare. Here, we report a case of intraosseous hemangioma with a cavernous pattern arising from the middle turbinate that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps. Except for nasal obstruction, there were no specific rhinologic symptoms. The tumor was excised en bloc by the endoscopic endonasal approach without preoperative embolization

    Plantar pressure distribution analysis of alpine and boarder-cross snowboarders’ carving turn was performed to provide instructors and snowboarders with scientific and quantitative data for evaluation of the turn. Snowboarders from Korean National Team for 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were chosen as subjects. To allow on-snow measurements of plantar pressure distribution, the boots were outfitted with pressure sensitive insoles. The carving turn section was divided into 5 events and 4 phases of which force, maximum pressure, and plantar contact area were analyzed. Comprehensive kinematical analysis was conducted which indicated the major features of pressure distribution in two different sporting events. The proposed results can be used as a reference for improvement of the training method in snowboarding

    Retina-Inspired Carbon Nitride-Based Photonic Synapses for Selective Detection of UV Light

    Photonic synapses combine sensing and processing in a single device, so they are promising candidates to emulate visual perception of a biological retina. However, photonic synapses with wavelength selectivity, which is a key property for visual perception, have not been developed so far. Herein, organic photonic synapses that selectively detect UV rays and process various optical stimuli are presented. The photonic synapses use carbon nitride (C3N4) as an UV-responsive floating-gate layer in transistor geometry. C3N4 nanodots dominantly absorb UV light; this trait is the basis of UV selectivity in these photonic synapses. The presented devices consume only 18.06 fJ per synaptic event, which is comparable to the energy consumption of biological synapses. Furthermore, in situ modulation of exposure to UV light is demonstrated by integrating the devices with UV transmittance modulators. These smart systems can be further developed to combine detection and dose-calculation to determine how and when to decrease UV transmittance for preventive health care.

    Proximal Approach of Ultrasound-guided Suprascapular Nerve Block: Comparison with Subacromial Steroid Injection

    Background This study was undertaken to evaluate early clinical outcomes of ultrasound-guided suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) using a proximal approach, as compared with subacromial steroid injection (SA). Methods This retrospective study included a consecutive series of 40 patients of SSNB and 20 patients receiving SA, from August 2017 to August 2018. The visual analogue scale (VAS), American Shoulder Elbow Surgeon’s score (ASES), University of California, Los Angeles score (UCLA), the 36 health survey questionnaire mental component summary (SF36-MCS), physical component summary (PCS), and range of motion (forward elevation, external rotation, and internal rotation) were assessed for clinical evaluations. Results Compared with the baseline, VAS, and ranges of motion in the SSNB group significantly improved at the 4-week follow-up (VAS scores improved from 6.7 ± 1.6 to 4.3 ± 2.4, p<0.001; all ranges of motion p<0.05), while other variables showed no statistically significant differences. All clinical variables were significantly improved in the SA group (p<0.05). However, all clinical scores at the 4-week follow-up showed no significant difference between groups. Conclusions Ultrasound-guided SSNB using proximal approach provides significant pain relief at 4-weeks after treatment, with statistically significant difference when compared with SA, suggesting that SSNB using proximal approach is a potentially useful option in managing shoulder pain. However, in the current study, it was less effective in improving shoulder function and health-related quality of life, compared with SA

    Coexistent Actinomycosis and Fungus Ball in the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report

    Actinomycosis is rarely accompanied by fungus balls. It is difficult to distinguish between actinomycosis and a fungus ball due to their similar clinical and computed tomography scan results. Thus, a meticulous histopathological examination is required for definite diagnosis. We report a case of actinomycosis accompanied by a fungus ball, found incidentally in a patient without rhinologic symptoms. The patient was successfully treated with endoscopic sinus surgery, followed by short-term antibiotic therapy. We suggest that shortterm antibiotic therapy may be more appropriate than long-term antibiotic therapy based on our case study as well as several other studies

    COMPARISON OF GAIT ANALYSIS BETWEEN ADOLESCENT IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS PATIENTS AND AGE MATCHED CONTROLS

    The purpose of this study was to compare kinematic variables and surface EMG values between adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients and age matched controls during a gait. Six male patients and five male healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Six cameras were used for 3D motion capture and selected joint angles were computed. Eight pairs of surface EMG electrodes were placed on latissimus dorsi, psoas, glutaeus medius, and biceps femoris. Results revealed that the scoliosis patients showed smaller hip joint angles compared to the values of the controls and vice versa for the trunk tilting angle. Small EMG activity of latissimus dorsi also found from the patient group. This meant that the scoliosis clearly influenced to the abnormal posture during a gait.
