Mechanisms of viral entry: sneaking in the front door

    Get PDF
Recent developments in methods to study virus internalisation are providing clearer insights into mechanisms used by viruses to enter host cells. The use of dominant negative constructs, specific inhibitory drugs and RNAi to selectively prevent entry through particular pathways has provided evidence for the clathrin-mediated entry of hepatitis C virus (HCV) as well as the caveolar entry of Simian Virus 40. Moreover, the ability to image and track fluorescent-labelled virus particles in real-time has begun to challenge the classical plasma membrane entry mechanisms described for poliovirus and human immunodeficiency virus. This review will cover both well-documented entry mechanisms as well as more recent discoveries in the entry pathways of enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. This will include viruses which enter the cytosol directly at the plasma membrane and those which enter via endocytosis and traversal of internal membrane barrier(s). Recent developments in imaging and inhibition of entry pathways have provided insights into the ill-defined entry mechanism of HCV, bringing it to the forefront of viral entry research. Finally, as high-affinity receptors often define viral internalisation pathways, and tropism in vivo, host membrane proteins to which viral particles specifically bind will be discussed throughout

Holocaust and beyond: calamities as historical crisis or global change in world order policy modelling?

    No full text
This paper intends to contribute for the reframe and reconceptualization of the key global changes and to sketch key guidelines to redesign the most advanced world order policy modelling, rethinking the concepts of individual, organization and life, from the point of view of general science of complex system. Then, at first, the text aims to analyze how western civilization has been profoundly and irrevocably changed by the Holocaust. After, the text presents four comments or theses on the paradoxical dilemmas emerging from allthe foregoing reflections on the Holocaust and, then, lists some trends of man and society in calamity situations

We report a photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution photoelectron imaging study of a bimetallic Nb2Au6 - cluster. Theoretical calculations, in conjunction with the experimental data, reveal that Nb2Au6 -/0 possess high-symmetry D 6h structures featuring a Nb-Nb axis coordinated equatorially by an Au6 ring. Chemical bonding analyses show that there are two π bonds and one σ bond in the Nb2 moiety in Nb2©Au6, as well as five totally delocalized σ bonds. The Nb[triple bond, length as m-dash]Nb triple bond is strengthened significantly by the delocalized σ bonds, resulting in an extremely short Nb-Nb bond length comparable to the quintuple bond in gaseous Nb2. The totally delocalized σ bonding in Nb2©Au6 is reminiscent of σ aromaticity, representing a new bonding mode in metal-ligand systems. The unusually short Nb-Nb bond length in Nb2©Au6 shows that the Au6 ring can serve as a bridging ligand to facilitate multiple bonding in transition metal dimers via delocalized σ bonding

Virgins, Terrorists, and Ten Children : Immigrants' Humorous Play with Ethnic Stereotypes in Bonding with Danes in the Workplace

    No full text
Drawing on fieldwork in a multi-ethnic workplace (an industrial kitchen in Denmark), this article explores immigrants' self-directed ethnic humor in collegial relationships with Danes as it spontaneously develops and plays out in everyday work settings. Approaching ethnic humor from a symbolic interactionist perspective rather than adopting the dominant conflict approach, this article emphasizes the bonding functions of ethnic humor. The article argues that immigrants' engagement in playful behavior with ethnic stereotypes in interactions with Danes is a form of “impression management” in which they defuse ethnic stereotypes and dissociate themselves from them by building joking relationships in the workplace with Danes.
