    Heatshield material selection for advanced ballistic reentry vehicles

    The Performance of staple rayon fiber and AVTEX continuous rayon fiber was evaluated as precursor materials for heatshields. The materials studied were referenced to the IRC FM5055A heatshield materials flown during the past decade. Three different arc jet facilities were used to simulate portions of the reentry environment. The IRC FM5055A and the AVTEX FM5055G, both continuous rayon fiber woven materials having the phenolic impregnant filled with carbon particles were compared. The AVTEX continuous fiber, unfilled material FM5822A was also examined to a limited extent. Test results show that the AVTEX FM5055G material provided a close substitute for the IRC FM5055A material both in terms of thermal protection and roll torque performance

    Low oxygen tension reverses antineoplastic effect of iron chelator deferasirox in human glioblastoma cells

    Background Overcoming resistance to treatment is an essential issue in many cancers including glioblastoma (GBM), the deadliest primary tumor of the central nervous system. As dependence on iron is a key feature of tumor cells, using chelators to reduce iron represents an opportunity to improve conventional GBM therapies. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to investigate the cytostatic and cytotoxic impact of the new iron chelator deferasirox (DFX) on human GBM cells in well-defined clinical situations represented by radiation therapy and mild-hypoxia. Results Under experimental normoxic condition (21 % O2), deferasirox (DFX) used at 10 μM for 3 days reduced proliferation, led cell cycle arrest in S and G2-M phases and induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis in U251 and U87 GBM cells. The abolition of the antineoplastic DFX effects when cells were co-treated with ferric ammonium sulfate supports the hypothesis that its effects result from its ability to chelate iron. As radiotherapy is the main treatment for GBM, the combination of DFX and X-ray beam irradiation was also investigated. Irradiation at a dose of 16 Gy repressed proliferation, cytotoxicity and apoptosis, but only in U251 cells, while no synergy with DFX was observed in either cell line. Importantly, when the same experiment was conducted in mild-hypoxic conditions (3 % O2), the antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects of DFX were abolished, and its ability to deplete iron was also impaired. Conclusions Taken together, these in vitro results could raise the question of the benefit of using iron chelators in their native forms under the hypoxic conditions often encountered in solid tumors such as GBM. Developing new chemistry or a new drug delivery system that would keep DFX active in hypoxic cells may be the next step toward their application

    A karyological analysis of three strains of #Clarias gariepinus used in fish culture, originating from different localities in Africa and Asia Minor, and thus representing populations from the distribution limits of this species, revealed an identical karyotype, 2n = 56 with a pair of heteromorphic sex chromosomes (ZW) and a nucleolus organizer (NOR) location in a single pair of chromosomes, for all strains.     Evaluation of force-torque displays for use with space station telerobotic activities

    Recent experiments which addressed Space Station remote manipulation tasks found that tactile force feedback (reflecting forces and torques encountered at the end-effector through the manipulator hand controller) does not improve performance significantly. Subjective response from astronaut and non-astronaut test subjects indicated that force information, provided visually, could be useful. No research exists which specifically investigates methods of presenting force-torque information visually. This experiment was designed to evaluate seven different visual force-torque displays which were found in an informal telephone survey. The displays were prototyped in the HyperCard programming environment. In a within-subjects experiment, 14 subjects nullified forces and torques presented statically, using response buttons located at the bottom of the screen. Dependent measures included questionnaire data, errors, and response time. Subjective data generally demonstrate that subjects rated variations of pseudo-perspective displays consistently better than bar graph and digital displays. Subjects commented that the bar graph and digital displays could be used, but were not compatible with using hand controllers. Quantitative data show similar trends to the subjective data, except that the bar graph and digital displays both provided good performance, perhaps do to the mapping of response buttons to display elements. Results indicate that for this set of displays, the pseudo-perspective displays generally represent a more intuitive format for presenting force-torque information

    Tidal currents, winds and the morphology of phytoplankton spatial structures

    Chlorophyll a, nutrients and salinity distributions were studied at two spatial scales (10 cm and 0.25 to 2.5 km) in the St. Lawrence Estuary (Quebec, Canada), in order to investigate the role of tidal currents and winds in the formation and maintenance of spatial structures. Data were collected according to a synoptic sampling pattern using three sampling platforms simultaneously, and they were analyzed using analysis of variance. The sampling pattern was repeated on four occasions during July 1980.Analyses of variance indicated significant spatial heterogeneities of about the same magnitude at the two scales studied for chlorophyll and nutrients, whereas salinity showed only large–scale variability. At the kilometer scale, the frequency distribution spectra of patch length for chlorophyll showed the existence of patches of various dimensions between 0.2 and 6.0 km with a dominance of small patches (≤0.5 km). Frequency maxima were usually observed at the smaller (≤0.5 km) and larger (≥2.0 km) scales for the nutrients and only at larger (≥2.0 km) scale for salinity. The distribution spectra of patch dimensions were characteristic for each sampling experiment, depending on tidal currents and prevailing wind conditions. Estimated patch dimensions were larger parallel to the current direction than perpendicular to current direction, implying that spatial structures are elongated in the sense of the current direction. Higher winds have, first, a tendency to increase the small–scale structure of the environment by breaking up larger patches into smaller patches, before structures are completely eliminated. The implication of these findings is that different results could be obtained depending on the sampling strategy used (sampling either at anchor stations or at random, independent of current direction), which could lead to different conclusions

    First case of spontaneous rupture of the left ureter in immediate post-partum

    The rupture of the ureter during pregnancy is a rare complication and is most frequently observed in the right ureter. We report below the case of a rupture in the left ureter. A 36-year old woman gave birth vaginally to a 3010-g girl without operative vaginal delivery or episiotomy. The following day, the patient exhibited a sudden pain in the left side spreading to the left iliac fossa. An abdominopelvic CT scan was carried out and revealed a flow of contrast agent at the left ureteral lumbar level and a left urinoma. A ureteral stent was inserted on the left side under X-ray control. Six weeks after delivery the ureteral stent was removed. The Uro CT scan allowed us to confirm the total recovery of the left ureter. We have reported below the first case of left rupture treated in a conservative manner with positive and functional clinical progress

Biomasses of maggots produced can be used to feed fishes. This innovation opens a new hope for many African countries where so much agro-industry by-products exist such as palm kernel meal, groundnut meal, cotton seed meal.     Multiple-Table Data in R with the multitable Package

    Data frames are integral to R. They provide a standard format for passing data to model-fitting and plotting functions, and this standard makes it easier for experienced users to learn new functions that accept data as a single data frame. Still, many data sets do not easily fit into a single data frame; data sets in ecology with a so-called fourth- corner problem provide important examples. Manipulating such inherently multiple-table data using several data frames can result in long and difficult-to-read workflows. We introduce the R multitable package to provide new data storage objects called data.list objects, which extend the data.frame concept to explicitly multiple-table settings. Like data frames, data lists are lists of variables stored as vectors; what is new is that these vectors have dimension attributes that make accessing and manipulating them easier. As data.list objects can be coerced to data.frame objects, they can be used with all R functions that accept an object that is coercible to a data.frame
