    On the non-vanishing of the Collins mechanism for single spin asymmetries

    The Collins mechanism provides a non-perturbative explanation for the large single spin asymmetries found in hard semi-inclusive reactions involving a transversely polarized nucleon. However, there are seemingly convincing reasons to suspect that the mechanism vanishes, and indeed it does vanish in the naive parton model where a quark is regarded as an essentially 'free' particle. We give an intuitive analysis which highlights the difference between the naive picture and the realistic one, and shows how the Collins mechanism arises when the quark is described as an off-shell particle by a field in interaction.     On Kaon production in e+e- and Semi-inclusive DIS reactions

    We consider semi-inclusive unpolarized DIS for the production of charged kaons and the different possibilities to test the conventionally used assumptions s-\bar=0 and D_d^{K^+-K^-}=0. The considered tests have the advantage that they do not require any knowledge of the fragmentation functions. We also show that measurements of both charged and neutral kaons would allow the determination of the kaon FFs D_q^{K^++K^-} solely from SIDIS measurements, and discuss the comparison of (D_u-D_d)^{K^+-K^-} obtained independently in SIDIS and e+e- reactions. All analysis are performed in LO and NLO in QCD.     Determination of polarized parton distribution functions with recent data on polarization asymmetries

    Global analysis has been performed within the next-to-leading order in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) to determine polarized parton distributions with new experimental data in spin asymmetries. The new data set includes JLab, HERMES, and COMPASS measurements on spin asymmetry A_1 for the neutron and deuteron in lepton scattering. Our new analysis also utilizes the double-spin asymmetry for pi^0 production in polarized pp collisions, A_{LL}^{pi^0}, measured by the PHENIX collaboration. Because of these new data, uncertainties of the polarized PDFs are reduced. In particular, the JLab, HERMES, and COMPASS measurements are valuable for determining Delta d_v(x) at large x and Delta qbar(x) at x~0.1. The PHENIX pi^0 data significantly reduce the uncertainty of Delta g(x). Furthermore, we discuss a possible constraint on Delta g(x) at large x by using the HERMES data on g_1^d in comparison with the COMPASS ones at x~0.05.Comment: 11 pages, REVTeX, 13 eps files, Phys.     On the Role of Higher Twist in Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering

    The higher twist corrections hN(x)/Q2h^N(x)/Q^2 to the spin dependent proton and neutron structure functions g1N(x,Q2)g_1^N(x, Q^2) are extracted in a model independent way from experimental data on g1Ng_1^N and found to be non-negligible. It is shown that the NLO QCD polarized parton densities determined from the data on g1, including higher twist effects, are in good agreement with those found earlier from our analysis of the data on g1/F1 and A1 where higher twist effects are negligible.     Understanding the spin structure of the proton is one of the main challenges in hadronic physics. While the concepts of spin and orbital angular momentum are pretty clear in the context of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the generalization of these concepts to quantum field theory encounters serious difficulties. It is however possible to define meaningful decompositions of the proton spin that are (in principle) measurable. The asymmetry is sensitive to the polarized gluon distribution and is indicated to be positive by theoretical predictions.     We work with two general factorization schemes in order to explore the consequences of imposing scheme independence on g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p (x, Q^2). We see that although the light quark sector is indifferent to the choice of a particular scheme, the extension of the calculations to the heavy quark sector indicates that a scheme like the MSˉ\bar{MS} is preferable.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.
