    Sexual dimorphism in the loud calls of Azara’s owl monkeys (Aotus azarae): evidence of sexual selection?

    Primates use different types of vocalizations in a variety of contexts. Some of the most studied types have been the long distance or loud calls. These vocalizations have been associated with mate defense, mate attraction, and resource defense, and it is plausible that sexual selection has played an important role in their evolution. Focusing on identified individuals of known sex and age, we evaluated the sexual dimorphism in a type of loud calls (hoots) in a population of wild owl monkeys (Aotus azarae) in Argentina. We found evidence of sexual dimorphism in call structure, with females and males only emitting one type of call, each differing in dominant frequency and Shannon entropy. In addition, both age-related and sex-specific differences in call usage were also apparent in response to the removal of one group member. Future acoustic data will allow us to assess if there are individual characteristics and if the structure of hoot calls presents differences in relation to the social condition of owl monkeys or specific sex responses to variants of hoot calls’ traits.     Photoinduced Palladium Negishi Cross-Coupling Through Visible Light Absorption of Palladium-Zinc Complexes

    A visible light-induced Negishi cross-coupling, through activation of a Pd(0)-zinc complex, is reported. This new photocatalytic process allows the expansion of the scope of zinc enolates in the Negishi coupling reaction with deactivated aryl halides. NMR experiments in the presence and absence of light confirmed that the formation of the palladium-zinc complex is key for accelerating the oxidative addition step

    A high transformer ratio scheme for PITZ PWFA experiments

    In the field of plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) sig-nificant progress has been made throughout the recent years.However, an important issue in building plasma based ac-celerators that provide particle bunches suitable for userapplications will be a high transformer ratio, i.e. the ra-tio between maximum accelerating field in the witness andmaximum decelerating fields in the driver bunch. The trans-former ratio for symmetrical bunches in an overdense plasmais naturally limited to 2. Theory and simulations show thatthis limit can be exceeded using asymmetrical bunches. Ex-perimentally this was proven in RF-structures, but not inPWFA. To study transformer ratios above this limit in thelinear regime of a plasma wake, an experimental schemetailored to the unique capabilities of the Photoinjector TestFacility at DESY Zeuthen site (PITZ), a 25-MeV electronaccelerator, is being investigated.     Long-term TNT and DNT contamination: 1-D modeling of natural attenuation in the vadose zone: case study, Portugal

    The vadose zone of a trinitrotoluene (TNT) and dinitrotoluene (DNT) contaminated site was investigated to assess the mobility of those explosives under natural conditions. Located in the left margin of the River Tejo Basin, Portugal, the site is located on unconsolidated sediments. Wastewaters associated with the 50-year explosives production were disposed in excavated ponds, from where water would infiltrate and pollute the unsaturated and saturated parts of the local aquifers. Two boreholes were drilled to 9 m depth in such a former waste pond to investigate the contaminant's fate in the vadose zone. Sediment samples were taken every 1-2 m for analysis of the polynitroaromatics (p-NACs) and organic volatile compounds, pH, organic carbon content, cation exchange capacity and grain size analysis. The main contaminant was TNT representing >70 % of the total p-NACs concentration that peaked approximately 7 mg/kg in one borehole, even if the median in both boreholes was of similar to 1 mg/kg. DNT was 4-30 % of the total p-NACs and nitrotoluene (NT), up to 5 %. No other (volatile) organic compound was detected. The predominance of TNT as the main contaminant implies that any natural mass reduction has been inefficient to clean the site. Several 1-D model simulations of p-NACs cleaning of the vadose zone under natural conditions indicated that the most probable scenario of combined advection and partitioning will only remove TNT after 10's of years, whereas DNT and NT will hardly be removed. Such low concentrations and long times for the p-NACs removal, suggest that by now those compounds have been washed-out to a level below standard limits

    Vigilance in a Cooperatively Breeding Primate

    Collective vigilance is considered a major advantage of group living in animals. We investigated vigilance behavior in wild mustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax), small, arboreal, cooperatively breeding New World primates that form stable mixed-species groups with saddleback tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis). We aimed 1) to investigate whether vigilance patterns change according to individual activity and 2) to examine whether there is a social component of vigilance in their cooperative and nonaggressive society. We studied 11 factors that may influence vigilance and used this data to interpret the possible functions of vigilance. We observed 44 individuals in 3 mixed-species and 2 single-species groups of 2 populations that differed in population density and home range sizes. Vigilance changed greatly when individuals were engaged in different activities and individual vigilance was affected by different sets of factors depending on the activity. As vigilance decreased in proximity of conspecifics and heterospecifics when feeding, and in larger mixed-species groups when resting, we conclude that the predominant function of vigilance in mustached tamarins is predator related. However, the absence of the group size effect in very large single-species groups suggests that it may also function to maintain group cohesion. In the population with higher density and smaller home ranges individuals also increased their vigilance in home range overlap areas. We found no evidence that mustached tamarins monitor group mates to avoid food stealing or aggression. The effect of heterospecifics on individual vigilance suggests that collective vigilance might have been an important incentive in the evolution of tamarin mixed-species groups

    Mite species inhabiting commercial bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) nests in Polish greenhouses

    Nests of social insects are usually inhabited by various mite species that feed on pollen, other micro-arthropods or are parasitic. Well-known negative effects of worldwide economic importance are caused by mites parasitizing honeybee colonies. Lately, attention has focused on the endoparasitic mite Locustacarus buchneri that has been found in commercial bumblebees. However, little is known of other mites associated with commercial bumblebee nests. Transportation of commercial bumblebee colonies with unwanted residents may introduce foreign mite species to new localities. In this study, we assessed the prevalence and species composition of mites associated with commercial bumblebee nests and determined if the mites are foreign species for Poland and for Europe. The study was conducted on 37 commercial bumblebee nests from two companies (Dutch and Israeli), originating from two greenhouses in southern Poland, and on 20 commercial bumblebee colonies obtained directly from suppliers. The species composition and abundance of mites inhabiting commercial bumblebee nests were determined. Seven mite species from three families were found in nests after greenhouse exploitation. The predominant mite species was Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acaridae) that was a 100-fold more numerous than representatives of the family Laelapidae (Hypoaspis marginepilosa, H. hyatti, H. bombicolens). Representatives of Parasitidae (Parasitellus fucorum, P. crinitus, P. ignotus) were least numerous. All identified mite species are common throughout Europe, foreign species were not found. Mites were not detected in nests obtained directly from suppliers. We conclude that probably bumblebee nests are invaded by local mite species during greenhouse exploitation

    Single Spin Asymmetry ANA_N in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry ANA_N at the center of mass energy s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The ANA_N was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared tt range 0.003t0.0350.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035 \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of ANA_N and its tt-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this s\sqrt{s}, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow of multi-strange hadrons and ϕ\phi meson in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

    We present high precision measurements of elliptic flow near midrapidity (y<1.0|y|<1.0) for multi-strange hadrons and ϕ\phi meson as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 200 GeV. We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of ϕ\phi and Ω\Omega v2v_{2} is similar to that of π\pi and pp, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0-30%\% and 30-80%\% collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between ϕ\phi and proton v2v_{2} at low transverse momentum in the 0-30%\% centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton v2v_{2}.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Energy dependence of acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectrum at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=19.6\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 and 200 GeV

    The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity yee<1|y_{ee}|<1 in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened ρ\rho spectral function for Mee<1.1M_{ee}<1.1 GeV/c2c^{2}. The integrated dielectron excess yield at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 19.6 GeV for 0.4<Mee<0.750.4<M_{ee}<0.75 GeV/c2c^2, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in In+In collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.3 GeV. For sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV, the normalized excess yield in central collisions is higher than that at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.3 GeV and increases from peripheral to central collisions. These measurements indicate that the lifetime of the hot, dense medium created in central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV is longer than those in peripheral collisions and at lower energies.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Observation of Transverse Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion Pairs in p+pp^\uparrow+p at s=200\sqrt{s}=200 GeV

    We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in p+pp^\uparrow+p collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of five standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities eta>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the rho-meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions. Comparing the results to data from lepton-nucleon scattering will test the universality of these spin-dependent quantities.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 15 tables. Submitted to PR
