A New WIMP Population in the Solar System and New Signals for Dark-Matter Detectors
We describe in detail how perturbations due to the planets can cause a
sub-population of WIMPs captured by scattering in surface layers of the Sun to
evolve to have orbits which no longer intersect the Sun. We argue that such
WIMPs, if their orbit has a semi-major axis less than 1/2 of Jupiter's, can
persist in the solar system for cosmological timescales. This leads to a new,
previously unanticipated WIMP population intersecting the Earth's orbit. The
WIMP-nucleon cross sections required for this population to be significant are
precisely those in the range predicted for SUSY dark matter, lying near the
present limits obtained by direct underground dark matter searches using
cyrogenic detectors. Thus, if a WIMP signal is observed in the next generation
of detectors, a potentially measurable signal due to this new population must
exist. This signal, lying in the keV range for Germanium detectors, would be
complementary to that of galactic halo WIMPs. A comparison of event rates,
anisotropies, and annual modulations would not only yield additional
confirmation that any claimed signal is indeed WIMP-based, but would also allow

Familial influences on sustained attention and inhibition in preschoolers
Background: In this study several aspects of attention were studied in 237 nearly 6-year-old twin pairs. Specifically, the ability to sustain attention and inhibition were investigated using a computerized test battery (Amsterdam Neuropsychological Tasks). Furthermore, the Teacher's Report Form (TRF) was filled out by the teacher of the child and the attention subscale of this questionnaire was analyzed. Methods: The variance in performance on the different tasks of the test battery and the score on the attention scale of the TRF were decomposed into a contribution of the additive effects of many genes (A), environmental effects that are shared by twins (C) and unique environmental influences not shared by twins (E) by using data from MZ and DZ twins. Results: The genetic model fitting results showed an effect of A and E for the attention scale of the TRF, and for some of the inhibition and sustained attention measures. For most of the attention variables, however, it was not possible to decide between a model with A and E or a model with C and E. Time-on-task effects on reaction time or number of errors and the delay after making an error did not show familial resemblances. A remarkable finding was that the heritability of the attention scale of the TRF was found to be higher than the heritability of indices that can be considered to be more direct measures of attention, such as mean tempo in the sustained attention task and response speed in the Go-NoGo task. Knowledge politics and new converging technologies: a social epistemological perspective
The “new converging technologies” refers to the prospect of advancing the human condition by the integrated study and application of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and the cognitive sciences - or “NBIC”. In recent years, it has loomed large, albeit with somewhat different emphases, in national science policy agendas throughout the world. This article considers the political and intellectual sources - both historical and contemporary - of the converging technologies agenda. Underlying it is a fluid conception of humanity that is captured by the ethically challenging notion of “enhancing evolution”
The First Magnetic Fields
We review current ideas on the origin of galactic and extragalactic magnetic
fields. We begin by summarizing observations of magnetic fields at cosmological
redshifts and on cosmological scales. These observations translate into
constraints on the strength and scale magnetic fields must have during the
early stages of galaxy formation in order to seed the galactic dynamo. We
examine mechanisms for the generation of magnetic fields that operate prior
during inflation and during subsequent phase transitions such as electroweak
symmetry breaking and the quark-hadron phase transition. The implications of
strong primordial magnetic fields for the reionization epoch as well as the
first generation of stars is discussed in detail. The exotic, early-Universe
mechanisms are contrasted with astrophysical processes that generate fields
after recombination. For example, a Biermann-type battery can operate in a
proto-galaxy during the early stages of structure formation. Moreover, magnetic
fields in either an early generation of stars or active galactic nuclei can be

Models of peer support to remediate post-intensive care syndrome: A report developed by the SCCM Thrive International Peer Support Collaborative
Objective: Patients and caregivers can experience a range of physical, psychological, and
cognitive problems following critical care discharge. The use of peer support has been
proposed as an innovative support mechanism.
Design: We sought to identify technical, safety and procedural aspects of existing
operational models of peer support, among the Society of Critical Care Medicine Thrive Peer
Support Collaborative. We also sought to categorize key distinctions between these models
and elucidate barriers and facilitators to implementation.
Subjects: 17 Thrive sites from the USA, UK, and Australia were represented by a range of
healthcare professionals.
Interventions: Via an iterative process of in-person and email/conference calls, members
of the Collaborative, defined the key areas on which peer support models could be defined
and compared; collected detailed self-reports from all sites; reviewed the information and
identified clusters of models. Barriers and challenges to implementation of peer support
models were also documented.
Results: Within the Thrive Collaborative, six general models of peer support were identified:
Community based, Psychologist-led outpatient, Models based within ICU follow-up clinics,
Online, Groups based within ICU and Peer mentor models. The most common barriers to
implementation were: recruitment to groups, personnel input and training: sustainability
and funding, risk management and measuring success.
Conclusion: A number of different models of peer support are currently being developed
to help patients and families recover and grow in the post-critical care setting
