    Parameters affecting spin casting of decorative and mechanical parts

    Published ArticleSpin casting is widely used as a batch manufacturing process for decorative products. In the process, moulds are filled by taking advantage of the centrifugal effect, which is used to increase the pressure within the moulds, resulting in more detailed products. In this study, we analyse the different parameters that could affect the casting of mechanical parts through spin casting. Through this study, the user will be guided in the selection of parameters that will result in a certain degree of accuracy. The parameters were determined by performing numerous experiments using zinc alloy and tin-based pewter as casting materials. Results were obtained by casting approximately 15 000 parts in various positions, and at various clamping pressures, rotational speeds and temperatures in both the mould and the material. The experiments were undertaken by varying one parameter at a time, and with each set parameter repeated once, resulting in 100 test pieces per parameter for evaluation. From the results obtained, a series of critical factors and parameters, which are driven by part characteristics or features, has been studied. Contrary to following a modelling approach, the research was conducted following an action-research approach, with planned activities, but where actual results have defined the follow-up procedures. These guidelines will help industrial users ensure the accuracy of parts produced by spin casting. Also, since this project attempted to create a database of results that can be applied in future, it furthermore implies that the data created for the first time can be used in a numerical modelling approach in further / follow-up research.     Ambivalence of the anisotropy of the vortex lattice in an anisotropic type-II superconductor

    We present a geometry-based discussion of possible vortex configurations in the mixed state of anisotropic type-II superconductors. It is shown that, if energy considerations assign six nearest neighbors to each vortex, two distinct modifications of the vortex lattice are possible. It is expected that certain conditions lead to a first order phase transition from one modification of the vortex lattice to the other upon varying the external magnetic field.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

    Instabilities in the Flux Line Lattice of Anisotropic Superconductors

    The stability of the flux line lattice has been investigated within anisotropic London theory. This is the first full-scale investigation of instabilities in the `chain' state. It has been found that the lattice is stable at large fields, but that instabilities occur as the field is reduced. The field at which these instabilities first arise, b(ϵ,θ)b^*(\epsilon,\theta), depends on the anisotropy ϵ\epsilon and the angle θ\theta at which the lattice is tilted away from the cc-axis. These instabilities initially occur at wavevector k(ϵ,θ)k^*(\epsilon,\theta), and the component of kk^* along the average direction of the flux lines, kzk_z, is always finite. As the instability occurs at finite kzk_z the dependence of the cutoff on kzk_z is important, and we have used a cutoff suggested by Sudb\ospace and Brandt. The instabilities only occur for values of the anisotropy ϵ\epsilon appropriate to a material like BSCCO, and not for anisotropies more appropriate to YBCO. The lower critical field Hc1(ϕ)H_{c_1}(\phi) is calculated as a function of the angle ϕ\phi at which the applied field is tilted away from the crystal axis. The presence of kinks in Hc1(ϕ)H_{c_1}(\phi) is seen to be related to instabilities in the equilibrium flux line structure.Comment: Extensively revised paper, with modified analysis of elastic instabilities.     Using the coarse grain averaged hydrodynamic approach, we calculate the excitation spectrum of vortex lattices sustained in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The spectrum gives the frequencies of the common-mode longitudinal waves in the hydrodynamic regime, including those of the higher-order compressional modes. Reasonable agreement with the measurements taken in a recent JILA experiment is found, suggesting that one of the longitudinal modes reported in the experiment is likely to be the n=2n=2, m=0m=0 mode.Comment: 2 figures.     Intensified training increases salivary free light chains in trained cyclists:Indication that training volume increases oral inflammation

    Periods of short-term intensified training (IT) are often used by athletes during training cycles over the season and undergoing phases of increased physical stress may impact upon the immune system. This study investigated the effects of a period of IT on free light chains (FLCs) in saliva - an emerging immune biomarker of oral inflammation - and matched serum samples in well-trained athletes. It also examined if IT influences basal FLC levels and FLC flux during acute exercise. Highly trained male cyclists (n = 10) underwent a 9-day period of IT; before and after IT participants performed a 1 h time trial (TT) on a cycle ergometer, with blood and saliva samples collected pre- and post-exercise. FLCs were assessed in serum and saliva, and IgG, IgA, IgM and creatinine were also measured in serum. Weekly training volume increased by 143% (95% CI 114–172%), p &lt; 0.001, during IT compared with pre-trial baseline training. Following IT, the cyclists demonstrated higher salivary FLC levels. Both salivary lambda FLC concentrations (p &lt; 0.05, η2 = 0.384) and secretion rates, and kappa FLC concentrations and secretion rates increased after IT. Salivary FLCs concentration and secretion rates decreased in response to the TT following IT (p &lt; 0.05, η2 = 0.387–0.428), but not in response to the TT prior to IT. No significant effects of IT on serum FLCs were observed. There were no significant changes in serum FLCs in response to the TT, before or after the IT period, nor did IT impact upon other serological responses to the TT. In conclusion, IT increased basal salivary FLC parameters and amplified decreases in salivary FLCs in response to acute exercise. Increases in salivary FLC concentration likely reflects alterations to oral inflammation during times of heavy training, and we show for the first time that FLCs may have utility as a marker of exercise stress and oral health status.</p

    Introduction: Measurement of immunoglobulin free light chains (FLCs) in saliva can serve as a non-invasive biomarker in health and behavioural research. FLCs have been explored in relation to physiological stress but FLC responses to psychological stress and their relationship with infections remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the impact of exam period stress on salivary FLCs alongside other established biomarkers of stress and whether FLCs relate to symptoms of infection. Methods: 58 healthy adults studying at university completed saliva samples and questionnaires in a period without exams (baseline), and again prior to the start of an exam period. Saliva samples were assessed for FLCs, IgA, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Measures of life events stress, perceived stress, anxiety and depression were completed. Students also reported incidence and severity of symptoms of infection and rated general well-being at baseline, prior to, during and after the exam period. Exercise, sleep and alcohol consumption were also assessed at both timepoints. Results: FLCs secretion rates were significantly lower at the exam period compared to baseline (p &lt;.01), with reductions of 26% and 25% for κ FLC and λ FLC, respectively. In agreement, salivary IgA secretion rate was lower at exams (non-significant trend, p =.07). Cortisol concentration significantly increased at exams (p &lt;.05) while DHEA did not change, leading to an increase in the cortisol:DHEA ratio (p =.06). Depression (p &lt;.05) and anxiety increased from baseline to exams and life stress reported in the build up to the exam period was higher compared with baseline (p &lt;.001). Well-being significantly decreased from baseline to exams (p &lt;.01). The proportion of participants reporting infection symptoms (70%) was unchanged between baseline and prior to exams. No significant relationships were found between FLCs or other saliva parameters and infection symptoms, well-being or stress/psychological measures. Changes in saliva parameters between timepoints were independent of health behaviours. Conclusions: Salivary FLCs are responsive to life events stress and corroborate with IgA. This preliminary study highlights the potential utility of FLCs as a new salivary biomarker in stress research.</p

    Constraints on Baryon-Nonconserving Yukawa Couplings in a Supersymmetric Theory

    The 1-loop evolution of couplings in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, extended to include baryon nonconserving (B ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/)(B\!\!\!/) operators through explicit RR-parity violation, is considered keeping only B ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/B\!\!\!/ superpotential terms involving the maximum possible number of third generation superfields. If all retained Yukawa couplings YiY_i are required to remain in the perturbative domain (Yi<1)(Y_i < 1) upto the scale of gauge group unification, upper bounds ensue on the magnitudes of the B ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/B\!\!\!/ coupling strengths at the supersymmetry breaking scale, independent of the model of unification. They turn out to be similar to the corresponding fixed point values reached from a wide range of YiY_i (including all YiY_i greater than unity) at the unification scale.     An ecological role for assortative mating under infection?

    Wildlife diseases are emerging at a higher rate than ever before meaning that understanding their potential impacts is essential, especially for those species and populations that may already be of conservation concern. The link between population genetic structure and the resistance of populations to disease is well understood: high genetic diversity allows populations to better cope with environmental changes, including the outbreak of novel diseases. Perhaps following this common wisdom, numerous empirical and theoretical studies have investigated the link between disease and disassortative mating patterns, which can increase genetic diversity. Few however have looked at the possible link between disease and the establishment of assortative mating patterns. Given that assortative mating can reduce genetic variation within a population thus reducing the adaptive potential and long-term viability of populations, we suggest that this link deserves greater attention, particularly in those species already threatened by a lack of genetic diversity. Here, we summarise the potential broad scale genetic implications of assortative mating patterns and outline how infection by pathogens or parasites might bring them about. We include a review of the empirical literature pertaining to disease-induced assortative mating. We also suggest future directions and methodological improvements that could advance our understanding of how the link between disease and mating patterns influences genetic variation and long-term population viability.Funding was provided by Marie Curie Fellowship and NERC PhD Studentship
