Summary of workshop II: Working Group on Risk Factors
Whether or not the risk factors and their relative importance for coronary heart disease (CHD) are the same in blacks and whites is unknown. The participants speculated that based on a broad variety of factors, which may affect the risk of CHD and which occur with a different frequency in blacks and whites and in women and men, a different rank order of risk probably is present. In addition several participants suggested evaluation of socioeconomic as well as ethnic differences had merit in the evaluation of ethnic CHD risk. Some of these differences may be protective factors rather than factors increasing the risk and thus should be considered in any evaluation of risk. Case-controlled studies were suggested as a useful form of pilot study prior to the initiation of a large-scale longitudinal cohort study of CHD risk
