A Curriculum for Excellence: a review of approaches to recognising wider achievement
The is the report of work undertaken by the Quality in Education Centre of the University of Strathclyde on behalf of Learning and Teaching Scotland into Recognising WiderAchievements of young people both in and out of school.Desk research and empirical research were undertaken in January and February 2007. This short timescale inevitably limited the extent of the work undertaken. The views ofstakeholders were sought through interviews and questionnaires. Definitions of wider achievement have been emerging in the UK since four key areaswere identified by the DfES (DfES, 1984). These were recognised in 'National Records of Achievement' and included recognition of achievement (exams and other activities), motivation and personal development, curriculum organisation, and a document of recordthat is 'recognised and valued'. Further policy development in the 1990s and into this century raised further issues including the range of activities and variation in types oflearning, equity of access to opportunities, and challenges of assessment
Second harmonic generation and birefringence of some ternary pnictide semiconductors
A first-principles study of the birefringence and the frequency dependent
second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients of the ternary pnictide
semiconductors with formula ABC (A = Zn, Cd; B = Si, Ge; C = As, P) with
the chalcopyrite structures was carried out. We show that a simple empirical
observation that a smaller value of the gap is correlated with larger value of
SHG is qualitatively true. However, simple inverse power scaling laws between
gaps and SHG were not found. Instead, the real value of the nonlinear response
is a result of a very delicate balance between different intraband and

Social Support and Health: A Theoretical Formulation Derived from King's Conceptual Framework
This article describes the development and initial empirical testing of a theoretical formulation of social support, family, health, and child health derived from Imogene King's conceptual framework for nursing. A correlational design was used to test the formulation with 103 families who have children with diabetes mellitus. Three hypotheses were sup ported : parents' social support had a direct and positive effect on family health, parents' social support and child's social support were positively related, and illness factors had a direct and negative effect on child health. Both the supported and unsupported hypotheses are discussed in terms of the present substantive knowledge base and evidence of validity for King's framework. How Biology Became Social and What It Means for Social Theory
In this paper I first offer a systematic outline of a series of conceptual novelties in
the life-sciences that have favoured, over the last three decades, the emergence of a
more social view of biology. I focus in particular on three areas of investigation: (1)
technical changes in evolutionary literature that have provoked a rethinking of the
possibility of altruism, morality and prosocial behaviours in evolution; (2) changes
in neuroscience, from an understanding of the brain as an isolated data processor to
the ultrasocial and multiply connected social brain of contemporary neuroscience;
and (3) changes in molecular biology, from the view of the gene as an autonomous
master of development to the âreactive genomeâ of the new emerging field of
molecular epigenetics. In the second section I reflect on the possible implications for
the social sciences of this novel biosocial terrain and argue that the postgenomic
language of extended epigenetic inheritance and blurring of the nature/nurture
boundaries will be as provocative for neo-Darwinism as it is for the social sciences
as we have known them. Signs of a new biosocial language are emerging in several
social-science disciplines and this may represent an exciting theoretical novelty for
twenty-first social theory
