Using the Annotated Bibliography as a Resource for Indicative Summarization
We report on a language resource consisting of 2000 annotated bibliography
entries, which is being analyzed as part of our research on indicative document
summarization. We show how annotated bibliographies cover certain aspects of
summarization that have not been well-covered by other summary corpora, and
motivate why they constitute an important form to study for information
retrieval. We detail our methodology for collecting the corpus, and overview
our document feature markup that we introduced to facilitate summary analysis.
We present the characteristics of the corpus, methods of collection, and show
its use in finding the distribution of types of information included in

Resources for Evaluation of Summarization Techniques
We report on two corpora to be used in the evaluation of component systems
for the tasks of (1) linear segmentation of text and (2) summary-directed
sentence extraction. We present characteristics of the corpora, methods used in
the collection of user judgments, and an overview of the application of the
corpora to evaluating the component system. Finally, we discuss the problems
and issues with construction of the test set which apply broadly to the

On the subdivision of small categories
We present an intrinsic and concrete development of the subdivision of small
categories, give some simple examples and derive its fundamental properties. As
an application, we deduce an alternative way to compare the homotopy categories
of spaces and small categories, by using partially ordered sets. This yields a
new conceptual proof to the well-known fact that these two homotopy categories

Using librarian techniques in automatic text summarization for information retrieval
A current application of automatic text summarization is to provide an overview of relevant documents coming from an information retrieval (IR) system. This paper examines how Centrifuser, one such summarization system, was designed with respect to methods used in the library community. We have reviewed these librarian expert techniques to assist information seekers and codified them into eight distinct strategies. We detail how we have operationalized six of these strategies in Centrifuser by computing an informative extract, indicative differences between documents, as well as navigational links to narrow or broaden a user's query. We conclude the paper with results from a preliminary evaluation

Role of verbs in document analysis
We present results of two methods for assessing the event profile of news articles as a function of verb type. The unique contribution of this research is the focus on the role of verbs, rather than nouns. Two algorithms are presented and evaluated, one of which is shown to accurately discriminate documents by type and semantic properties, i.e. the event profile. The initial method, using WordNet (Miller et al. 1990), produced multiple cross-classification of articles, primarily due to the bushy nature of the verb tree coupled with the sense disambiguation problem. Our second approach using English Verb Classes and Alternations (EVCA) Levin (1993) showed that monosemous categorization of the frequent verbs in WSJ made it possible to usefully discriminate documents. For example, our results show that articles in which communication verbs predominate tend to be opinion pieces, whereas articles with a high percentage of agreement verbs tend to be about mergers or legal cases. Temporal Changes in a Tropical Nekton Assemblage and Performance of a Prawn Selective Gear
The temporal variation of components of a moderately diverse (H=1.46) tropical estuarine fish assemblage (long. 146°30'E, lat. 8°45'S) was directed by salinities that had been determined by local oceanographic and probably topographic conditions. For this assemblage, two types of intrayear component profiles are predicted. Pooled data (1988-91) reveal a large component of regular/resident species (43%) in an assemblage which has been under a narrow temperature regime «5T). These results facilitate a discussion on the relevance and usefulness of three hypotheses often cited in studies concerning species diversity and component characteristics of the subtropical/tropical coastal nonreef fish assemblages.
Manifestations of the assemblage are reflected in catch composition and weights of 39 trials conducted for a selective prawning gear whose performance in bycatch reduction, mainly for finfishes, is judged by an index, E, we have previously proposed. This gear is capable of harvesting the prawn while conserving the demersal fish. Behavioral responses to netting of the prawns and the finfishes, especially the nearshore surface schoolers such as leiognathids, are discussed from several points of view. An adaptation in terms of group selection for leiognathids of their locking mechanism of median fin spines has been interpreted. For the purpose of bycatch reduction or E enhancement, suggestions for improvements in net design and trawl configuration by considering the behavioral features of fish are made. Our original formula of E is modified for general use.
Bycatch problems in the regional prawn fisheries and their possible impacts on fishery planning and development in Papua New Guinea as a developing country are discussed. The gear tested may offer enormous ecological and economic benefits. The gear is multipurpose, extremely simple, and can also be used as a biological sampler
Kondo Effect in Fermi Systems with a Gap: A Renormalization Group Study
We present the results of a Wilson Renormalization Group study of the
single-impurity Kondo and Anderson models in a system with a gap in the
conduction electron spectrum. The behavior of the impurity susceptibility and
the zero-frequency response function, are discussed in the
cases with and without particle-hole symmetry. In addition, for the asymmetric
