Preparation and characterization of stable aqueous suspensions of up-converting Er3+/Yb3+-doped LiNbO3 nanocrystals

The preparation of LiNbO3:Er3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals and their up-conversion properties have been studied. It is demonstrated that polyethyleneimine- (PEI) assisted dispersion procedures allow obtaining stable aqueous LiNbO3:Er3+/Yb3+ powder suspensions, with average size particles well below the micron range (100–200 nm) and the isoelectric point of the suspension reaching values well above pH 7. After excitation of Yb3+ ions at a wavelength of 980 nm, the suspensions exhibit efficient, and stable, IR-to-visible (green and red) up-conversion properties, easily observed by the naked eye, very similar to those of the starting crystalline bulk material

Prognostication and monitoring of mesothelioma using biomarkers:a systematic review

Background: Radiological markers of treatment response and prognostication in malignant pleural mesothelioma have limitations due to the morphology of the disease. Serum or pleural fluid biomarkers that could act as an adjunct to radiological assessment would be of significant value. The aim of this review was to collate and summarise the literature relating to this topic. Methods: A systematic review was performed on the databases Pubmed and EMBASE to identify relevant studies. Two independent researchers read the abstracts and used the Quality in Prognostic Studies tool to assess the quality of the evidence. Results: Forty-five studies were identified from the current literature. Twenty studies investigated the role of serum soluble mesothelin with majority suggesting that it has variable utility as a baseline test but when measured serially correlates with treatment response and prognosis. Several studies demonstrated that serum osteopontin correlated with survival at baseline. Other biomarkers have shown prognostic utility in individual studies but are yet to be reproduced in large cohort studies. Conclusions: From the available literature no serum or pleural fluid biomarker was identified that could be recommended currently for routine clinical practice. However, a falling serum soluble mesothelin might correlate with treatment response and improved survival

High frequency characterization of a GaInAs/InP electronic waveguide T-branch switch

We report comprehensive microwave measurements on a T-branch switch; a GaInAs/InP electron waveguide based structure. The study includes a small signal model of the device where limitations of high frequency operation are discussed. An example of large signal operation where the nonlinearity of the device is exploited by operating the T-branch switch as a frequency multiplier is demonstrated

Macroscopic defects in GaN/AlN multiple quantum well structures grown by MBE on GaN templates

We have used MBE to grow in AlN/GaN superlattices, with different number of periods, on 2.5-mu m-thick MOVPE-GaN templates to study the development of defects such as surface deformation due to strain. After growth the samples were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The strain increased with the number of quantum wells (QWs) and eventually caused defects such as microcracks visible by optical microscopy at four or more QW periods. High-resolution TEM images showed shallow recessions on the surface (surface deformation) indicating formation of microcracks in the MQW region. The measured intersubband (IS) absorption linewidth from a four period structure was 97 meV, which is comparable with the spectrum from a 10 period structure at an absorption energy of similar to 700 meV. This indicates that the interface quality of the MQW is not substantially affected by the presence of cracks. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Nonlinear all-optical guided wave devices: operating characteristics and material trade-offs

The operating characteristics of novel all-optical integrated optics devices based on strong nonlinearities are reviewed, as are all-optical guided-wave devices which are nonlinear extensions of well-known linear integrated optics devices. A comparison of how different material systems meet the requirements for all-optical guided-wave devices is also presented
