Early Debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) in patients with suspected acute infection after hip or knee arthroplasty - safe, effective and without negative functional impact
Introduction: Debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) is known to be effective in treating acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, deciding to perform additional surgery in the early postoperative period may be challenging as there is the concern of adding morbidity and clinical presentation is often subtle. We mean to assess the impact of early DAIR on final functional outcome. Methods: A case-control comparison was performed between patients that underwent DAIR for suspected PJI between 2010-2016 and controls randomly selected (1:2 ratio) from a list of primary joint replacements. Patients were matched for anatomic site, age, gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, body mass index and follow-up time. The outcome of surgical treatment and complications were assessed and Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS) or Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) were performed. Results: Thirty-eight cases were included at a mean follow-up of 42 months. Infection was not confirmed in one patient. There was one infection related-death and three other cases of treatment failure that required a two-stage revision. Overall success rate was 89.2%. There were no significant patient reported differences regarding final functional outcome between both groups: pain 91±6 vs. 87±13; other symptoms 90±8 vs. 90±9; activities of day living 86±8 vs. 85±14; sport 63±13 vs. 57±16; quality of life 78±17 vs. 76±16. Discussion: These findings support that DAIR for suspected acute PJI is safe, effective and causes no impact on final functional results. Thus, a low threshold for assuming infection and subsequent DAIR may safely be adopted in the early postoperative period.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Simple Metals at High Pressure
In this lecture we review high-pressure phase transition sequences exhibited
by simple elements, looking at the examples of the main group I, II, IV, V, and
VI elements. General trends are established by analyzing the changes in
coordination number on compression. Experimentally found phase transitions and
crystal structures are discussed with a brief description of the present

Current Generation and Management of Domestic Solid Waste at Nhon Nghia Village, Phong Dien District, Can Tho City, Vietnam
This study was conducted to investigate the generation, composition and management of domestic solid waste in Nhon Nghia commune, Phong Dien district, Can Tho city in Vietnam. Households, garbage collectors and environmental managers were interviewed for the required information. The results showed that the rate of domestic solid waste generation is 0.65 kg/person/day with the total amount of domestic waste generated 3,998 tons/year. In which, 74.32% of waste is biodegradable and recyclable. The separation of waste at source in the study area is relatively good, accounting for 67%, most of the waste is classified into waste that can be reused and recycled, accounting for 45%. Waste collection and transportation system in Nhon Nghia commune has not been completed since among the four studied hamlets, only two hamlets, Nhon Hung A and Nhon Khanh A, have solid waste collection services. The results presented that the majority of households self-treat their waste by burning, burying (23%) and discharging directly into the environment (27%). The remaining amount of domestic solid waste is treated at the landfill. People's awareness about the negative impacts that solid waste brings to the environment and health is relatively high. It is forecasted that by 2025, the amount of domestic solid waste will increase along with the population growth rate, increasing from 3,998 tons/year (in 2022) to 4,164 tons/year (in 2025). Strengthening segregation at source, improving the collection and transportation system, raising public awareness and strictly handling violations of discharge should be done to improve the efficiency of domestic solid waste management
Amplitude Damping for single-qubit System with single-qubit mixed-state Environment
We study a generalized amplitude damping channel when environment is
initially in the single-qubit mixed state. Representing the affine
transformation of the generalized amplitude damping by a three-dimensional
volume, we plot explicitly the volume occupied by the channels simulatable by a
single-qubit mixed-state environment. As expected, this volume is embedded in
the total volume by the channels which is simulated by two-qubit enviroment.
The volume ratio is approximately 0.08 which is much smaller than 3/8, the

Fermi resonance-algebraic model for molecular vibrational spectra
A Fermi resonance-algebraic model is proposed for molecular vibrations, where
a U(2) algebra is used for describing the vibrations of each bond, and Fermi
resonances between stretching and bending modes are taken into account. The
model for a bent molecule XY_2 and a molecule XY_3 is successfully applied to
fit the recently observed vibrational spectrum of the water molecule and arsine
(AsH_3), respectively, and results are compared with those of other models.
Calculations show that algebraic approaches can be used as an effective method
for describing molecular vibrations with small standard deviations
Epiparasitic plants specialized on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
Over 400 non-photosynthetic species from 10 families of vascular plants obtain their carbon from fungi and are thus defined as myco-heterotrophs. Many of these plants are epiparasitic on green plants from which they obtain carbon by 'cheating' shared mycorrhizal fungi. Epiparasitic plants examined to date depend on ectomycorrhizal fungi for carbon transfer and exhibit exceptional specificity for these fungi, but for most myco-heterotrophs neither the identity of the fungi nor the sources of their carbon are known. Because many myco-heterotrophs grow in forests dominated by plants associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; phylum Glomeromycota), we proposed that epiparasitism would occur also between plants linked by AMF. On a global scale AMF form the most widespread mycorrhizae, thus the ability of plants to cheat this symbiosis would be highly significant. We analysed mycorrhizae from three populations of Arachnitis uniflora (Corsiaceae, Monocotyledonae), five Voyria species and one Voyriella species (Gentianaceae, Dicotyledonae), and neighbouring green plants. Here we show that non-photosynthetic plants associate with AMF and can display the characteristic specificity of epiparasites. This suggests that AMF mediate significant inter-plant carbon transfer in nature
Firefly: Embracing Future Web Technologies
At IPAC/Caltech, we have developed the Firefly web archive and visualization system. Used in production for the last eight years in many missions, Firefly gives the scientist significant capabilities to study data. Firefly provided the first completely web based FITS viewer as well as a growing set of tabular and plotting visualizers. Further, it will be used for the science user interface of the LSST telescope which goes online in 2021. Firefly must meet the needs of archive access and visualization for the 2021 LSST telescope and must serve astronomers beyond the year 2030. Recently, our team has faced the fact that the technology behind Firefly software was becoming obsolete. We were searching for ways to utilize the current breakthroughs in maintaining stability, testability, speed, and reliability of large web applications, which Firefly exemplifies. In the last year, we have ported the Firefly to cutting edge web technologies. Embarking on this massive overhaul is no small feat to say the least. Choosing the technologies that will maintain a forward trajectory in a future development project is always hard and often overwhelming. When a team must port 150,000 lines of code for a production-level product there is little room to make poor choices. This paper will give an overview of the most modern web technologies and lessons learned in our conversion from GWT based system to React/Redux based system
Tertiary-Treated Municipal Wastewater is a Significant Point Source of Antibiotic Resistance Genes Into Duluth-Superior Harbor
In this study, the impact of tertiary-treated municipal wastewater on the quantity of several antibiotic resistance determinants in Duluth-Superior Harbor was investigated by collecting surface water and sediment samples from 13 locations in Duluth-Superior Harbor, the St. Louis River, and Lake Superior. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to target three different genes encoding resistance to tetracycline (tet(A), tet(X), and tet(W)), the gene encoding the integrase of class 1 integrons (intI1), and total bacterial abundance (16S rRNA genes) as well as total and human fecal contamination levels (16S rRNA genes specific to the genus Bacteroides). The quantities of tet(A), tet(X), tet(W), intI1, total Bacteroides, and human-specific Bacteroides were typically 20-fold higher in the tertiary-treated wastewater than in nearby surface water samples. In contrast, the quantities of these genes in the St. Louis River and Lake Superior were typically below detection. Analysis of sequences of tet(W) gene fragments from four different samples collected throughout the study site supported the conclusion that tertiary-treated municipal wastewater is a point source of resistance genes into Duluth-Superior Harbor. This study demonstrates that the discharge of exceptionally treated municipal wastewater can have a statistically significant effect on the quantities of antibiotic resistance genes in otherwise pristine surface waters

An angle-resolved soft x-ray spectroscopy study of the electronic states of single crystal MgB2
Angle-resolved soft x-ray measurements made at the boron K-edge in single
crystal MgB2 provide new insights into the B-2p local partial density of both
unoccupied and occupied band states. The strong variation of absorption with
incident angle of exciting x-rays permits the clear separation of contributions
from \sigma states in the boron plane and \pi states normal to the plane. A
careful comparison with theory accurately determines the energy of selected
critical points in the conduction band. Resonant inelastic x-ray emission
at an incident angle of 15 degrees shows a large enhancement of the emission
spectra within about 0.5 eV of the Fermi level that is absent at 45 degrees and
is much reduced at 60 degrees. We conclude that momentum transferred from the
resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) process couples empty and filled
