    Nitrification-denitrification in WSP: a mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in maturation ponds

    A pilot-scale primary maturation pond was spiked with 15N-labelled ammonia (15NH4Cl) and 15N labelled nitrite (Na15NO2), in order to improve current understanding of the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen transformations and removal in WSP systems. Stable isotope analysis of δ15N showed that nitrification could be considered as an intermediate step in WSP, which is masked by simultaneous denitrification, under conditions of low algal activity. Molecular microbiology analysis showed that denitrification can be considered a feasible mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in WSP, which may be supported either by ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) or by methanotrophs, in addition to nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). However, the relative supremacy of the denitrification process over other nitrogen removal mechanisms (e.g., biological uptake) depends upon phytoplanktonic activity

    Fluctuations in population density of planorbid hosts of S. mansoni are influenced by climatic factors. The knowledge about interference from changes in water temperature in these populations is an important aspect of the epidemiology of schistosomiasis. In this experiment, it is explored the influence of different temperatures on the development of Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata melanic and albino variants. The results indicated an intrinsic relationship between temperature and development of the parasite in the intramollusc phase, independent of the pigmentation of the mantle of the molluscs. The higher the temperature, the shorter the period necessary for the development of the parasite was while the higher the mortality of infected mollusks. It is concluded that, in the presence of climate change, the increasement of temperature in cold and flooded regions may encourage the establishment of new foci of transmission of schistosomiasis by changing the geographic extent and extending the epidemiological transmission potential. In warm climates, higher temperatures, however, could compromise the transmission of the disease because of biological stress suffered by parasite and host. Under these conditions, it can result in the death of the parasite or a change in their ability to infect new host species of molluscs in new areas. Mantle pigmentation patterns in molluscs have not shown significant interference in the development of the parasite.77

    Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva: Case Report.

    Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a rare genetic disease characterized by widespread soft tissue ossification and congenital stigmata of the extremities. We report on a male child followed for ten years since the age of 3 years and 9 months, when the diagnosis was made. He was born with bilateral hypoplasic hallux valgus and ventricular septal defect, corrected by trans-sternal approach when 32 months old. Restriction of neck mobility followed and foci of ectopic ossification appeared. Four crises of disease exacerbation were treated with oral prednisone and/or other antiinflammatory drugs. Sodium etidronate 5 to 10 mg/kg/day was prescribed intermittently during about six years but was discontinued due to osteopenia. The disease course has been relentless, with severe movement restriction including the chest wall. A review showed few similar case reports in the Brazilian literature. We revisit the criteria for diagnosis and the essentials of management and treatment.58342-

    Performance of the modified Becke-Johnson potential

    Very recently, in the 2011 version of the Wien2K code, the long standing shortcome of the codes based on Density Functional Theory, namely, its impossibility to account for the experimental band gap value of semiconductors, was overcome. The novelty is the introduction of a new exchange and correlation potential, the modified Becke-Johnson potential (mBJLDA). In this paper, we report our detailed analysis of this recent work. We calculated using this code, the band structure of forty one semiconductors and found an important improvement in the overall agreement with experiment as Tran and Blaha [{\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} 102, 226401 (2009)] did before for a more reduced set of semiconductors. We find, nevertheless, within this enhanced set, that the deviation from the experimental gap value can reach even much more than 20%, in some cases. Furthermore, since there is no exchange and correlation energy term from which the mBJLDA potential can be deduced, a direct optimization procedure to get the lattice parameter in a consistent way is not possible as in the usual theory. These authors suggest that a LDA or a GGA optimization procedure is used previous to a band structure calculation and the resulting lattice parameter introduced into the 2011 code. This choice is important since small percentage differences in the lattice parameter can give rise to quite higher percentage deviations from experiment in the predicted band gap value.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 5 Table

    Dynamics in binary cluster crystals

    As a result of the application of coarse-graining procedures to describe complex fluids, the study of systems consisting of particles interacting through bounded, repulsive pair potentials has become of increasing interest in the last years. A well known example is the so-called Generalized Exponential Model (GEM-mm), for which the interaction between particles is described by the potential v(r)=ϵexp[(r/σ)m]v(r)=\epsilon\exp[-(r/\sigma)^m]. Interactions with m>2m > 2 lead to the formation of a novel phase of soft matter consisting of cluster crystals. Recent studies on the phase behavior of binary mixtures of GEM-mm particles have provided evidence for the formation of novel kinds of alloys, depending on the cross interactions between the two species. This work aims to study the dynamic behavior of such binary mixtures by means of extensive molecular dynamics simulations, and in particular to investigate the effect of the addition of non-clustering particles on the dynamic scenario of one-component cluster crystals. Analogies and differences with the one-component case are revealed and discussed by analyzing self- and collective dynamic correlators.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, submitted to JSTA

    This study aimed to implement a systematic review of literature, in order to find theoretical support on the relationship between new product development and product innovation, moderated by environmental turbulence in the technological and market dimensions. It was used the qualitative approach, with data and information collected from published articles on the subject. The criteria researched consisted of: temporal cut from 2000 to May 2015, the article must belong to the area of Business Management or Economy, to present relationship with Environmental Turbulence, Development of New Products and product innovation. In the literature used, it was not possible found any article presenting an integrative model using New Product Development or Product Innovation moderated by environmental turbulence in its two dimensions. Based on the review accomplished, it is possible to define more four subjects to be studied in future empirical works approach these elements
