Enrollment in YFV Vaccine Trial: An Evaluation of Recruitment Outcomes Associated with a Randomized Controlled Double-Blind Trial of a Live Attenuated Yellow Fever Vaccine
This investigation evaluated several factors associated with diverse participant enrollment of a clinical trial assessing safety, immunogenicity, and comparative viremia associated with administration of 17-D live, attenuated yellow fever vaccine given alone or in combination with human immune globulin. We obtained baseline participant information (e.g., sociodemographic, medical) and followed recruitment outcomes from 2005 to 2007. Of 355 potential Yellow Fever vaccine study participants, 231 cases were analyzed. Strong interest in study participation was observed among racial and ethnically diverse persons with 36.34% eligible following initial study screening, resulting in 18.75% enrollment. The percentage of white participants increased from 63.66% (prescreened sample) to 81.25% (enrollment group). The regression model was significant with white race as a predictor of enrollment (OR=2.744, 95% CI=1.415-5.320, p=0.003).In addition, persons were more likely to enroll via direct outreach and referral mechanisms compared to mass advertising (OR=2.433, 95% CI=1.102-5.369). The findings indicate that racially diverse populations can be recruited to vaccine clinical trials, yet actual enrollment may not reflect that diversit
Gravity Duals of Lifshitz-like Fixed Points
We find candidate macroscopic gravity duals for scale-invariant but
non-Lorentz invariant fixed points, which do not have particle number as a
conserved quantity. We compute two-point correlation functions which exhibit
novel behavior relative to their AdS counterparts, and find holographic
renormalization group flows to conformal field theories. Our theories are
characterized by a dynamical critical exponent , which governs the
anisotropy between spatial and temporal scaling , ; we focus on the case with . Such theories describe
multicritical points in certain magnetic materials and liquid crystals, and
have been shown to arise at quantum critical points in toy models of the
cuprate superconductors. This work can be considered a small step towards

The role of climatic and terrain attributes in estimating baseflow recession in tropical catchments
The understanding of low flows in rivers is paramount more than ever as demand for water increases on a global scale. At the same time, limited streamflow data to investigate this phenomenon, particularly in the tropics, makes the provision of accurate estimations in ungauged areas an ongoing research need. This paper analysed the potential of climatic and terrain attributes of 167 tropical and sub-tropical unregulated catchments to predict baseflow recession rates. Daily streamflow data (m<sup>3</sup> s<sup>&ndash;1</sup>) from the Global River Discharge Center (GRDC) and a linear reservoir model were used to obtain baseflow recession coefficients (<i>k</i><sub>bf</sub>) for these catchments. Climatic attributes included annual and seasonal indicators of rainfall and potential evapotranspiration. Terrain attributes included indicators of catchment shape, morphology, land cover, soils and geology. Stepwise regression was used to identify the best predictors for baseflow recession coefficients. Mean annual rainfall (MAR) and aridity index (AI) were found to explain 49% of the spatial variation of <i>k</i><sub>bf</sub>. The rest of climatic indices and the terrain indices average catchment slope (SLO) and tree cover were also good predictors, but co-correlated with MAR. Catchment elongation (CE), a measure of catchment shape, was also found to be statistically significant, although weakly correlated. An analysis of clusters of catchments of smaller size, showed that in these areas, presumably with some similarity of soils and geology due to proximity, residuals of the regression could be explained by SLO and CE. The approach used provides a potential alternative for <i>k</i><sub>bf</sub> parameterisation in ungauged catchments

Evaluation of precipitation estimation accuracy in reanalyses, satellite products, and an ensemble method for regions in Australia and south and east Asia
Precipitation estimates from reanalyses and satellite observations are routinely used in hydrologic applications, but their accuracy is seldom systematically evaluated. This study used high-resolution gauge-only daily precipitation analyses for Australia (SILO) and South and East Asia [Asian Precipitation-Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation (APHRODITE)] to calculate the daily detection and accuracy metrics for three reanalyses [ECMWF Re-Analysis Interim (ERA-Interim), Japanese 25-yr Reanalysis (JRA-25), and NCEP-Department of Energy (DOE) Global Reanalysis 2] and three satellite-based precipitation products [Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42V6, Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Imagery Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)]. A depthfrequency- adjusted ensemble mean of the reanalyses and satellite products was also evaluated. Reanalyses precipitation from ERA-Interim in southern Australia (SAu) and northern Australasia (NAu) showed higher detection performance. JRA-25 had a better performance in South and East Asia (SEA) except for the monsoon period, in which satellite estimates from TRMM and CMORPH outperformed the reanalyses. In terms of accuracy metrics (correlation coefficient, root-mean-square difference, and a precipitation intensity proxy, which is the ratio of monthly precipitation amount to total days with precipitation) and over the three subdomains, the depth-frequency-adjusted ensemble mean generally outperformed or was nearly as good as any of the single members. The results of the ensemble show that additional information is captured from the different precipitation products. This finding suggests that, depending on precipitation regime and location, combining (re)analysis and satellite products can lead to better precipitation estimates and, thus,more accurate hydrological applications than selecting any single product
Identification of two distinct intron elements involved in alternative splicing of beta-tropomyosin pre-mRNA
The rat beta-tropomyosin gene encodes two isoforms, termed skeletal muscle beta-tropomyosin and fibroblast last tropomyosim 1 (TM-1), via an alternative RNA processing mechanism. The gene contains 11 exons. Exons 1-5 and exons 8 and 9 are common to all mRNAs expressed from the gene. Exons 6 and 11 are used in fibroblasts, as well as smooth muscle, whereas exons 7 and 10 are used only in skeletal muscle. In the present studies we focused on the mutually exclusive internal alternative splice choice involving exon 6 (fibroblast-type splice) and exon 7 (skeletal muscle-type splice). We have identified two distinct elements in the intron, upstream of exon 7, involved in splice site selection. The first element is comprised of a polypyrimidine tract located 89-143 nucleotides upstream of the 3' splice site, which specifies the location of the lariat branchpoints used, 144-153 nucleotides upstream of exon 7. The 3' splice site AG dinucleotide has no role in selection of these branchpoints. The second element is comprised of intron sequences located between the polypyrimidine tract and the 3' splice site of exon 7. It contains an important determinant in alternative splice site selection, because deletion of these sequences results in the use of the skeletal muscle-specific exon in nonmuscle cells. We propose that the use of lariat branchpoints located far upstream from a 3' splice site may be a general feature of some alternatively excised introns, reflecting the presence of regulatory sequences located between the lariat branch site and the 3' splice site. The data also indicate that alternative splicing of the rat beta-tropomyosin gene is regulated by a somewhat different mechanism from that described for rat alpha-tropomyosin gene and the transformer-2 gene of Drosophila melanogaster
Wolf 1130: A Nearby Triple System Containing a Cool, Ultramassive White Dwarf
Following the discovery of the T8 subdwarf WISEJ200520.38+542433.9 (Wolf
1130C), with common proper motion to a binary (Wolf 1130AB) consisting of an M
subdwarf and a white dwarf, we set out to learn more about the old binary in
the system. We find that the A and B components of Wolf 1130 are tidally
locked, which is revealed by the coherence of more than a year of V band
photometry phase folded to the derived orbital period of 0.4967 days. Forty new
high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with the Immersion Grating
Infrared Spectrometer (IGRINS) provide radial velocities and a projected
rotational velocity (v sin i) of 14.7 +/- 0.7 km/s for the M subdwarf. In
tandem with a Gaia parallax-derived radius and verified tidal-locking, we
calculate an inclination of i=29 +/- 2 degrees. From the single-lined orbital
solution and the inclination we derive an absolute mass for the unseen primary
(1.24+0.19-0.15 Msun). Its non-detection between 0.2 and 2.5 microns implies
that it is an old (>3.7 Gyr) and cool (Teff<7000K) ONe white dwarf. This is the
first ultramassive white dwarf within 25pc. The evolution of Wolf 1130AB into a
cataclysmic variable is inevitable, making it a potential Type Ia supernova
progenitor. The formation of a triple system with a primary mass >100 times the
tertiary mass and the survival of the system through the common-envelope phase,
where ~80% of the system mass was lost, is remarkable. Our analysis of Wolf
1130 allows us to infer its formation and evolutionary history, which has
unique implications for understanding low-mass star and brown dwarf formation

Association of Urine Findings with Metabolic Syndrome Traits in a Population of Patients with Nephrolithiasis
Background The odds of nephrolithiasis increase with more metabolic syndrome (MetS) traits. We evaluated associations of metabolic and dietary factors from urine studies and stone composition with MetS traits in a large cohort of stone-forming patients.
Methods Patients .18 years old who were evaluated for stones with 24-hour urine collections between July 2009 and December 2018 had their records reviewed retrospectively. Patient factors, laboratory values, and diagnoses were identified within 6 months of urine collection and stone composition within 1 year. Four groups with none, one, two, and three or four MetS traits (hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes) were evaluated. Trends across groups were tested using linear contrasts in analysis of variance and analysis of covariance.
Results A total of 1473 patients met the inclusion criteria (835 with stone composition). MetS groups were 684 with no traits, 425 with one trait, 211 with two traits, and 153 with three or four traits. There were no differences among groups for urine volume, calcium, or ammonium excretion. There was a significant trend (P,0.001) for more MetS traits being associated with decreasing urine pH, increasing age, calculated dietary protein, urine uric acid (UA), oxalate, citrate, titratable acid phosphate, net acid excretion, and UA supersaturation. The ratio of ammonium to net acid excretion did not differ among the groups. After adjustment for protein intake, the fall in urine pH remained strong, while the upward trend in acid excretion was lost. Calcium oxalate stones were most common, but there was a trend for more UA (P,0.001) and fewer calcium phosphate (P50.09) and calcium oxalate stones (P50.01) with more MetS traits.
Conclusions Stone-forming patients with MetS have a defined pattern of metabolic and dietary risk factors that contribute to an increased risk of stone formation, including higher acid excretion, largely the result of greater protein intake, and lower urine pH
