Do health investments improve agricultural productivity?
Determining the causality between health measures and both income and labor productivity remains an ongoing challenge for economists. This review paper aims to answer the question: Does improved population health lead to higher rates of agricultural growth? In attempting to answer this question, we survey the empirical literature at micro and macro levels concerning the link between health investments and agricultural productivity. The evidence from some micro-level studies suggests that inexpensive health interventions can have a very large impact on labor productivity. The macro-level evidence at the country and global level, however, is mixed at best and in some cases suggests that health care interventions have no impact on income, much less on agricultural productivity. At both micro and macro levels, the literature does not provide a clear-cut answer to the question under investigation. Overall, the review reveals a great deal of heterogeneity in terms of estimation methods, definition and measurement of health variables, choice of economic outcomes, single-equation versus multiple-equation approach, and static versus dynamic approach. The actual magnitude of estimated elasticities is difficult to assess in part due to estimation bias caused by the endogeneity of health outcomes. Accessing Patient Records in Virtual Healthcare Organisations
The ARTEMIS project is developing a semantic web service based P2P interoperability infrastructure for healthcare information systems that will allow healthcare providers to securely share patient records within virtual healthcare organisations. Authorisation decisions to access patient records across organisation boundaries can be very dynamic and must occur within a strict legislative framework. In ARTEMIS we are developing a dynamic authorisation mechanism called PBAC that provides a means of contextual and process oriented access control to enforce healthcare business processes. PBAC demonstrates how healthcare providers can dynamically share patient records for care pathways across organisation boundaries
Measurement of exciton correlations using electrostatic lattices
We present a method for determining correlations in a gas of indirect
excitons in a semiconductor quantum well structure. The method involves
subjecting the excitons to a periodic electrostatic potential that causes
modulations of the exciton density and photoluminescence (PL). Experimentally
measured amplitudes of energy and intensity modulations of exciton PL serve as
an input to a theoretical estimate of the exciton correlation parameter and
temperature. We also present a proof-of-principle demonstration of the method
for determining the correlation parameter and discuss how its accuracy can be

Pancharatnam-Berry phase in condensate of indirect excitons
We report on the observation of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase in a condensate
of indirect excitons (IXs) in a GaAs coupled quantum well structure. The
Pancharatnam-Berry phase leads to phase shifts of interference fringes in IX
interference patterns. Correlations are found between the phase shifts,
polarization pattern of IX emission, and onset of IX spontaneous coherence. The
Pancharatnam-Berry phase is acquired due to coherent spin precession in IX
condensate. The effect of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase on the IX phase pattern

Neuronal activation for semantically reversible sentences
Semantically reversible sentences are prone to misinterpretation and take longer for typically developing children and adults to comprehend; they are also particularly problematic for those with language difficulties such as aphasia or Specific Language Impairment. In our study, we used fMRI to compare the processing of semantically reversible and nonreversible sentences in 41 healthy participants to identify how semantic reversibility influences neuronal activation. By including several linguistic and nonlinguistic conditions within our paradigm, we were also able to test whether the processing of semantically reversible sentences places additional load on sentence-specific processing, such as syntactic processing and syntactic-semantic integration, or on phonological working memory. Our results identified increased activation for reversible sentences in a region on the left temporal–parietal boundary, which was also activated when the same group of participants carried out an articulation task which involved saying “one, three” repeatedly. We conclude that the processing of semantically reversible sentences places additional demands on the subarticulation component of phonological working memory
