On-line digital computer control of the NERVA nuclear rocket engine
The problem of on-line digital computer control of the NERVA nuclear rocket engine is considered. Proposed is a method of State Dependent State Variable Feedback (SDSVF) as a practical approach to the control of NERVA and other complex nonlinear and/or time-varying systems. The difficulties inherent in other design methods are avoided by defining the optimal closed loop system in terms of a desired transfer function, rather than a performance index to maximize or minimize
Mysterious iodine-overabundance in Antarctic meteorites
Halogen as well as other trace element concentrations in meteorite finds can be influenced by alteration processes on the Earth's surface. The discovery of Antarctic meteorites offered the opportunity to study meteorites which were kept in one of the most sterile environment of the Earth. Halogen determination in Antartic meteorites was compared with non-Antarctic meteorites. No correlation was found between iodine concentration and the weathering index, or terrestrial age. The halogen measurements indicate a contaminating phase rich in iodine and also containing chlorine. Possible sources for this contamination are discussed
Discovery of meteorites on a blue-ice field near the Frontier Mountains, North Victoria Land, Antarctica
A high concentration of meteorites were discovered on a blue ice field northeast of the Frontier Mountains. As a result of a systematic search, a total of 42 meteorites were recovered. The current glacial situation has evolved through various stages, which are discussed in relationship to the concentration of meteorites. Ice flow patterns are summarized. The chemical composition and terrestrial ages of the meteorites are discussed
Quantum Transport through Nanostructures with Orbital Degeneracies
Geometric symmetries cause orbital degeneracies in a molecule's spectrum. In
a single-molecule junction, these degeneracies are lifted by various
symmetry-breaking effects. We study quantum transport through such
nanostructures with an almost degenerate spectrum. We show that the master
equation for the reduced density matrix must be derived within the
singular-coupling limit as opposed to the conventional weak-coupling limit.
This results in signatures of the density matrix's off-diagonal elements in the
transport characteristics

The role of carbon for superconductivity in MgCNi from specific heat
The influence of carbon deficiency on superconductivity of MgCNi is
investigated by specific heat measurements in the normal and superconducting
state. In order to perform a detailed analysis of the normal state specific
heat, a computer code is developed which allows for an instantaneous estimate
of the main features of the lattice dynamics. By analyzing the evolution of the
lattice vibrations within the series and simultaneously considering the visible
mass enhancement, the loss in the electron-phonon coupling can be attributed to
significant changes of the prominent Ni vibrations. The present data well
supports the recently established picture of strong electron-phonon coupling
and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in this compound.Comment: 4 pages, latex, corrections to the text, one reference added, one

A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite
The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above
which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated
an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is
an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it
exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode.
The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low
temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic
