    Computing multiparameter persistent homology through a discrete Morse-based approach

    Persistent homology allows for tracking topological features, like loops, holes and their higher-dimensional analogues, along a single-parameter family of nested shapes. Computing descriptors for complex data characterized by multiple parameters is becoming a major challenging task in several applications, including physics, chemistry, medicine, and geography. Multiparameter persistent homology generalizes persistent homology to allow for the exploration and analysis of shapes endowed with multiple filtering functions. Still, computational constraints prevent multiparameter persistent homology to be a feasible tool for analyzing large size data sets. We consider discrete Morse theory as a strategy to reduce the computation of multiparameter persistent homology by working on a reduced dataset. We propose a new preprocessing algorithm, well suited for parallel and distributed implementations, and we provide the first evaluation of the impact of multiparameter persistent homology on computations

    A Path Toward the Use of Trail Users’ Tweets to Assess Effectiveness of the Environmental Stewardship Scheme: An Exploratory Analysis of the Pennine Way National Trail

    Large and unofficial data sets, for instance those gathered from social media, are increasingly being used in geographical research and explored as decision support tools for policy development. Social media data have the potential to provide new insight into phenomena about which there is little information from conventional sources. Within this context, this paper explores the potential of social media data to evaluate the aesthetic management of landscape. Specifically, this project utilises the perceptions of visitors to the Pennine Way National Trail, which passes through land managed under the Environmental Stewardship Scheme (ESS). The method analyses sentiment in trail users’ public Twitter messages (tweets) with the aim of assessing the extent to which the ESS maintains landscape character within the trail corridor. The method demonstrates the importance of filtering social media data to convert it into useful information. After filtering, the results are based on 161 messages directly related to the trail. Although small, this sample illustrates the potential for social media to be used as a cheap and increasingly abundant source of information. We suggest that social media data in this context should be seen as a resource that can complement, rather than replace, conventional data sources such as questionnaires and interviews. Furthermore, we provide guidance on how social media could be effectively used by conservation bodies, such as Natural England, which are charged with the management of areas of environmental value worldwide

    Variable-resolution Compression of Vector Data

    The compression of spatial data is a promising solution to reduce the space of data storage and to decrease the transmission time of spatial data over the Internet. This paper proposes a new method for variable-resolution compression of vector data. Three key steps are encompassed in the proposed method, namely, the simplification of vector data via the elimination of vertices, the compression of removed vertices, and the decoding of the compressed vector data. The proposed compression method was implemented and applied to compress vector data to investigate its performance in terms of the compression ratio, distortions of geometric shapes. The results show that the proposed method provides a feasible and efficient solution for the compression of vector data, is able to achieve good compression ratios and maintains the main shape characteristics of the spatial objects within the compressed vector data
