    Structured Literature Review of Design-Build/Bridging, Design-Bid-Build & Design-Build

    This paper is a systematic literature review of journal papers and articles on the three project delivery systems (PDS), design-build/bridging (bridging), design-bid-build (DBB) and design-build (DB). Mean estimated project cost, project schedule and market share for these three types of PDS were studied and a comparison is shown in this paper. Upon the comparative study, the benefits of bridging over DBB are outlined. The paper finds out that despite the benefits of bridging over DBB, very few projects in the industry have used this system as a choice of project delivery. This is due to lack of information on this project delivery method among the construction industry professionals. Hence, structured literature review, combined with cost and schedule data comparisons, has highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the bridging method of project delivery. The scope of this research is limited to projects in the United States

    What Happens Before? A Field Experiment Exploring How Pay and Representation Differentially Shape Bias on the Pathway into Organizations

    Little is known about how discrimination manifests before individuals formally apply to organizations or how it varies within and between organizations. We address this knowledge gap through an audit study in academia of over 6,500 professors at top U.S. universities drawn from 89 disciplines and 259 institutions. In our experiment, professors were contacted by fictional prospective students seeking to discuss research opportunities prior to applying to a doctoral program. Names of students were randomly assigned to signal gender and race (White, Black, Hispanic, Indian, Chinese), but messages were otherwise identical. We hypothesized that discrimination would appear at the informal “pathway” preceding entry to academia and would vary by discipline and university as a function of faculty representation and pay. We found that when considering requests from prospective students seeking mentoring in the future, faculty were significantly more responsive to White males than to all other categories of students, collectively, particularly in higher-paying disciplines and private institutions. Counterintuitively, the representation of women and minorities and discrimination were uncorrelated, a finding that suggests greater representation cannot be assumed to reduce discrimination. This research highlights the importance of studying decisions made before formal entry points into organizations and reveals that discrimination is not evenly distributed within and between organizations

    ADR Characteristics and Performance in International and Global Indexes

    This study looks at the characteristics and performance of ADRs in international and global indexes. We find that ADRs in EAFE are tilted toward three common factors: giant cap, high dividend yield, and U.K. stocks. In terms of risk-adjusted performance, we find that ADRs provide inefficient diversification for US investors, as tradeoffs of return and risk are better with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and the S&P Global 700, as compared with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and an ADR breakout of the Global 700. Our findings on ADR characteristics are consistent with prior research, while our performance findings are inconsistent with prior research which points to ADR portfolio efficiency

    How Can Decision Making Be Improved?

    The optimal moment to address the question of how to improve human decision making has arrived. Thanks to 50 years of research by judgment and decision-making scholars, psychologists have developed a detailed picture of the ways in which human judgment is bounded. This article argues that the time has come to focus attention on the search for strategies that will improve bounded judgment because decision-making errors are costly and are growing more costly, decision makers are receptive, and academic insights are sure to follow from research on improvement. In addition to calling for research on improvement strategies, this article organizes the existing literature pertaining to improvement strategies and highlights promising directions for future research

    Susceptibility of staphylococci isolated from a burns unit to mupirocin and other antimicrobial agents

    The activity of mupirocin (Bactroban) against coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated in a burns unit was tested to ascertain its effectiveness, and to detect any resistant isolates after continuous use of mupirocin for 2.5 years. A total of 395 staphylococci, consisting of 330 Staphylococcus aureus and 65 coagulase-negative staphylococci, were tested for resistance to mupirocin and other antimicrobial agents. The results showed that 94.5% of the isolates were fully susceptible to mupirocin (MIC ≤4 mg/l), and 5.3% expressed low-level resistance (MIC 8-128 mg/l). One Staphylococcus haemolyticus isolate expressed high-level resistance (MIC >1,024 mg/l). It transferred high-level mupirocin resistance to other staphylococci in conjugation experiments, which indicated a capacity to transmit mupirocin resistance between species. The results demonstrated that mupirocin was still highly effective against staphylococci in the burns unit. However, the demonstration that the resistant S. haemolyticus isolate could transfer high-level mupirocin resistance to other staphylococci was of concern. There is a compelling need to test staphylococci from clinical materials for mupirocin resistance. Early detection of resistance can prevent the establishment and spread of the mupirocin-resistant strains in the unit

    Many recently discovered non-coding RNAs do not fold into a single native conformation, but rather, sample many different conformations along their free energy landscape to carry out their biological function. Unprecedented insights into the RNA dynamic structure landscape are provided by solution-state NMR techniques that measure the structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic characteristics of motions spanning picosecond to second timescales at atomic resolution. From these studies a basic description of the RNA dynamic structure landscape is emerging, bringing new insights into how RNA structures change to carry out their function as well as applications in RNA-targeted drug discovery and RNA bioengineering

    Primary Cardiac Sarcoma: A Rare, Aggressive Malignancy with a High Propensity for Brain Metastases.

    Introduction: Primary cardiac sarcoma (PCS) has a poor prognosis compared to other sarcomas due to late presentation, challenging resection, incidence of metastases, and limited efficacy of systemic therapies. Methods: A medical record search engine was queried to identify patients diagnosed with PCS from 1992 to 2017 at the University of Michigan. Results: Thirty-nine patients with PCS had a median age of 41 years (range 2-77). Common histologies were angiosarcoma (AS, 14), high-grade undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS, 10), and leiomyosarcoma (LMS, 5). Sites of origin were left atrium (18), right atrium (16), and pericardium (5). AS was the most common right-sided tumor; UPS was more common on the left. Eighteen patients presented with metastases involving lung (10), bone (7), liver (5), and brain (4). Twenty-five patients underwent resection, achieving 3 R Conclusions: PCS portends a poor prognosis, because of difficulty in obtaining complete resection of sarcoma, advanced stage at diagnosis, and high risk of brain metastases. Providers should be aware of the increased risk of brain metastases and consider brain imaging at diagnosis and follow-up
