Optimization of graphene-based materials outperforming host epoxy matrices
The degree of graphite exfoliation and edge-carboxylated layers can be controlled and balanced to design lightweight materials characterized by both low electrical percolation thresholds (EPT) and improved mechanical properties. So far, this challenging task has been undoubtedly very hard to achieve. The results presented in this paper highlight the effect of exfoliation degree and the role of edge-carboxylated graphite layers to give self-assembled structures embedded in the polymeric matrix. Graphene layers inside the matrix may serve as building blocks of complex systems that could outperform the host matrix. Improvements in electrical percolation and mechanical performance have been obtained by a synergic effect due to finely balancing the degree of exfoliation and the chemistry of graphene edges which favors the interfacial interaction between polymer and carbon layers. In particular, for epoxy-based resins including two partially exfoliated graphite samples, differing essentially in the content of carboxylated groups, the percolation threshold reduces from 3 wt% down to 0.3 wt%, as the carboxylated group content increases up to 10 wt%. Edge-carboxylated nanosheets also increase the nanofiller/epoxy matrix interaction, determining a relevant reinforcement in the elastic modulus
Sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo for multi-target tracking with correlated RSS measurements
In this paper, we present a Bayesian approach to accurately track multiple objects based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements. This work shows that taking into account the spatial correlations of the observations caused by the random shadowing effect can induce significant tracking performance improvements, especially in very noisy scenarios. Additionally, the superiority of the proposed Sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SMCMC) method over the more common Sequential Importance Resampling (SIR) technique is empirically demonstrated through numerical simulations in which multiple targets have to be tracked
Methanolysis of Poly(lactic Acid) Using Catalyst Mixtures and the Kinetics of Methyl Lactate Production
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a leading bioplastic of which the market share is predicted to increase in the future; its growing production capacity means its end-of-life treatment is becoming increasingly important. One beneficial disposal route for PLA is its chemical recycling via alcoholysis. The alcoholysis of PLA leads to the generation of value-added products alkyl lactates; this route also has potential for a circular economy. In this work, PLA was chemically recycled via methanolysis to generate methyl lactate (MeLa). Four commercially available catalysts were investigated: zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(OAc)2), magnesium acetate tetrahydrate (Mg(OAc)2), 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), and triazabicyclodecene (TBD). Dual catalyst experiments displayed an increase in reactivity when Zn(OAc)2 was paired with TBD or DMAP, or when Mg(OAc)2 was paired with TBD. Zn(OAc)2 coupled with TBD displayed the greatest reactivity. Out of the single catalyst reactions, Zn(OAc)2 exhibited the highest activity: a higher mol% was found to increase reaction rate but plateaued at 4 mol%, and a higher equivalent of methanol was found to increase the reaction rate, but plateaued at 17 equivalents. PLA methanolysis was modelled as a two-step reversible reaction; the activation energies were estimated at: Ea1 = 25.23 kJâmolâ1, Ea2 = 34.16 kJâmolâ1 and Ea-2 = 47.93 kJâmolâ1

This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research in which reconstructive digital modelling operates on different areas of
heritage and at different scales to realize an analysis, interpretation, and communication experience in the field of museum
valorization. It is, in fact, a work that includes both the philological reconstruction of the lost parts of a Buddha statue of GandhÄra,
dating back to the second century b.C. and kept at the Museum of Oriental Art (MAO) in Turin, and its contextualization within a
coeval architectural complex, recognized as philologically compatible, located in Balo-Kale, in the region of GandhÄra. The
reconstructive models are finally used with communicative purposes for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications
inside the museum
