Controllable coherent population transfers in superconducting qubits for quantum computing
We propose an approach to coherently transfer populations between selected
quantum states in one- and two-qubit systems by using controllable
Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passages (SCRAPs). These {\it evolution-time
insensitive} transfers, assisted by easily implementable single-qubit
phase-shift operations, could serve as elementary logic gates for quantum
computing. Specifically, this proposal could be conveniently demonstrated with
existing Josephson phase qubits. Our proposal can find an immediate application
in the readout of these qubits. Indeed, the broken parity symmetries of the
bound states in these artificial "atoms" provide an efficient approach to
design the required adiabatic pulses.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures. to appear in Physical Review Letter
Local transformation of mixed states of two qubits to Bell diagonal states
The optimal entanglement manipulation for a single copy of mixed states of
two qubits is to transform it to a Bell diagonal state. In this paper we derive
an explicit form of the local operation that can realize such a transformation.
The result obtained is universal for arbitrary entangled two-qubit states and
it discloses that the corresponding local filter is not unique for density
matrices with rank and can be exclusively determined for that with
and 4. As illustrations, a four-parameters family of mixed states are explored,
the local filter as well as the transformation probability are given
explicitly, which verify the validity of the general result.Comment: 5 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Anchoring Bias in Online Voting
Voting online with explicit ratings could largely reflect people's
preferences and objects' qualities, but ratings are always irrational, because
they may be affected by many unpredictable factors like mood, weather, as well
as other people's votes. By analyzing two real systems, this paper reveals a
systematic bias embedding in the individual decision-making processes, namely
people tend to give a low rating after a low rating, as well as a high rating
following a high rating. This so-called \emph{anchoring bias} is validated via
extensive comparisons with null models, and numerically speaking, the extent of
bias decays with interval voting number in a logarithmic form. Our findings
could be applied in the design of recommender systems and considered as
important complementary materials to previous knowledge about anchoring effects
on financial trades, performance judgements, auctions, and so on.Comment: 5 pages, 4 tables, 5 figure
Cosmic Hydrogen Was Significantly Neutral a Billion Years After the Big Bang
The ionization fraction of cosmic hydrogen, left over from the big bang,
provides crucial fossil evidence for when the first stars and quasar black
holes formed in the infant universe. Spectra of the two most distant quasars
known show nearly complete absorption of photons with wavelengths shorter than
the Ly-alpha transition of neutral hydrogen, indicating that hydrogen in the
intergalactic medium (IGM) had not been completely ionized at a redshift z~6.3,
about a billion years after the big bang. Here we show that the radii of
influence of ionizing radiation from these quasars imply that the surrounding
IGM had a neutral hydrogen fraction of tens of percent prior to the quasar
activity, much higher than previous lower limits of ~0.1%. When combined with
the recent inference of a large cumulative optical depth to electron scattering
after cosmological recombination from the WMAP data, our result suggests the
existence of a second peak in the mean ionization history, potentially due to
an early formation episode of the first stars.Comment: 14 Pages, 2 Figures. Accepted for publication in Nature. Press

Binegativity and geometry of entangled states in two qubits
We prove that the binegativity is always positive for any two-qubit state. As
a result, as suggested by the previous works, the asymptotic relative entropy
of entanglement in two qubits does not exceed the Rains bound, and the
PPT-entanglement cost for any two-qubit state is determined to be the
logarithmic negativity of the state. Further, the proof reveals some
geometrical characteristics of the entangled states, and shows that the partial
transposition can give another separable approximation of the entangled state
in two qubits.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. I made the proof more transparen
A new topological aspect of the arbitrary dimensional topological defects
We present a new generalized topological current in terms of the order
parameter field to describe the arbitrary dimensional topological
defects. By virtue of the -mapping method, we show that the topological
defects are generated from the zero points of the order parameter field , and the topological charges of these topological defects are topological
quantized in terms of the Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees of -mapping
under the condition that the Jacobian . When , it is shown that there exist the crucial case of branch process.
Based on the implicit function theorem and the Taylor expansion, we detail the
bifurcation of generalized topological current and find different directions of
the bifurcation. The arbitrary dimensional topological defects are found
splitting or merging at the degenerate point of field function but
the total charge of the topological defects is still unchanged.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Revte
