Aerodynamic Effect of Strakes on Two-Dimensional Tail Boom Models of the OH-58A and the OH-58D Helicopters
During hover and low speed flight, helicopters experience significant aerodynamic forces on the tail boom caused by the wake from the main and tail rotors and by crosswinds. These effects were simulated during a study conducted in the Langley 14 by 22 Foot Subsonic Tunnel on a 136 percent scaled 2-D tail boom model with cross sections representative of those on the U.S. Army OH-58A and the OH-58D helicopters. The effects of longitudinal strakes attached to the cross sections were studied. To obtain the aerodynamic forces acting on the cross sections, the flow incidence range on the scaled models was varied from -45 to 90 degrees and the models were tested through a dynamic pressure range of 5 to 15 psf. The results of the OH-58A and the OH-58D configurations show a significant improvement at conditions which represent right sideward flight by reducing the adverse aerodynamic side force when the strakes are installed. These data were used to calculate a change in tail rotor power for the full scale flight vehicle and indicated approx. a 5 to 6 percent average savings in right sideward flight for the critical velocity range of 0 to 30 knots. Increases in the tail boom normal force were noted due to the strakes. The results indicate a potential for reducing the directional control and tail rotor thrust required in the critical hover and right sideward flight speed range with a calculated minimum increase to main rotor power required and an overall net improvement in power of 0.5 percent for both the OH-58A and OH-58D
Proving causal relationships using observational data
We describe a means of rejecting a null hypothesis concerning observed, but not deliberately manipulated, variables of the form H0: A -/-> B in favor of an alternative hypothesis HA: A --> B, even given the possibility of causally related unobserved variables. Rejection of such an H0 relies on the availability of two observed and appropriately related instrumental variables. While the researcher will have limited control over the confidence level in this test, simulation results suggest that type I errors occur with a probability of less than 0.15 (often substantially less) across a wide range of circumstances. The power of the test is limited if there are but few observations available and the strength of correspondence among the variables is weak. The narrative coherence of witness transcripts in children on the autism spectrum
Background and Aims. Autistic children often recall fewer details about witnessed events than typically developing children (of comparable age and ability), although the information they recall is generally no less accurate. Previous research has not examined the narrative coherence of such accounts, despite higher quality narratives potentially being perceived more favourably by criminal justice professionals and juries. This study compared the narrative coherence of witness transcripts produced by autistic and typically developing (TD) children (ages 6-11 years, IQs 70+).
Methods and Procedures. Secondary analysis was carried out on interview transcripts from a subset of 104 participants (autism=52, TD=52) who had taken part in a larger study of eyewitness skills in autistic and TD children. Groups were matched on chronological age, IQ and receptive language ability. Coding frameworks were adopted from existing narrative research, featuring elements of ‘story grammar’.
Outcomes and Results. Whilst fewer event details were reported by autistic children, there were no group differences in narrative coherence (number and diversity of ‘story grammar’ elements used), narrative length or semantic diversity.
Conclusions and Implications. These findings suggest that the narrative coherence of autistic children’s witness accounts is equivalent to TD peers of comparable age and ability
Helicopter low-speed yaw control
A system for improving yaw control at low speeds consists of one strake placed on the upper portion of the fuselage facing the retreating rotor blade and another strake placed on the lower portion of the fuselage facing the advancing rotor blade. These strakes spoil the airflow on the helicopter tail boom during hover, low speed flight, and right or left sidewards flight so that less side thrust is required from the tail rotor
Cold-water coral reef frameworks, megafaunal communities and evidence for coral carbonate mounds on the Hatton Bank, north east Atlantic
Offshore banks and seamounts sustain diverse megafaunal communities, including framework reefs formed by cold-water corals. Few studies have quantified environmental effects on the alpha or beta diversity of these communities. We adopted an interdisciplinary approach that used historical geophysical data to identify topographic highs on Hatton Bank, which were surveyed visually. The resulting photographic data were used to examine relationships between megafaunal communities and macrohabitat, the latter defined into six categories (mud, sand, cobbles, coral rubble, coral framework, rock). The survey stations revealed considerable small-scale variability in macrohabitat from exposed Late Palaeocene lava flows to quiescent muddy habitats and coral-built carbonate mounds. The first reported evidence for coral carbonate mound development in UK waters is presented, which was most pronounced near present-day or former sites of topographic change, suggesting that local current acceleration favoured coral framework growth and mound initiation. Alpha diversity varied significantly across macrohabitats, but not between rock and coral rubble, or between smaller grain sized categories of cobbles, sand and mud. Community composition differed between most macrohabitats, and variation in beta diversity across Hatton Bank was largely explained by fine-scale substratum. Certain megafauna were clearly associated with particular macrohabitats, with stylasterid corals notably associated with cobble and rock habitats and coral habitats characterized by a diverse community of suspension-feeders. The visual surveys also produced novel images of deep-water megafauna including a new photographic record of the gorgonian coral Paragorgia arborea, a species not previously reported from Rockall Plateau. Further interdisciplinary studies are needed to interpret beta diversity across these and other environmental gradients on Hatton Bank. It is clear that efforts are also needed to improve our understanding of the genetic connectivity and biogeography of vulnerable deep-water ecosystems and to develop predictive models of their occurrence that can help inform future conservation measures
Electrically tuneable exciton-polaritons through free electron doping in monolayer WS microcavities
We demonstrate control over light-matter coupling at room temperature
combining a field effect transistor (FET) with a tuneable optical microcavity.
Our microcavity FET comprises a monolayer tungsten disulfide WS
semiconductor which was transferred onto a hexagonal boron nitride flake that
acts as a dielectric spacer in the microcavity, and as an electric insulator in
the FET. In our tuneable system, strong coupling between excitons in the
monolayer WS and cavity photons can be tuned by controlling the cavity
length, which we achieved with excellent stability, allowing us to choose from
the second to the fifth order of the cavity modes. Once we achieve the strong
coupling regime, we then modify the oscillator strength of excitons in the
semiconductor material by modifying the free electron carrier density in the
conduction band of the WS. This enables strong Coulomb repulsion between
free electrons, which reduces the oscillator strength of excitons until the
Rabi splitting completely disappears. We controlled the charge carrier density
from 0 up to 3.2 10 cm, and over this range the Rabi
splitting varies from a maximum value that depends on the cavity mode chosen,
down to zero, so the system spans the strong to weak coupling regimes.Comment: Accepted for publicatio
