    Stability of Scalar Fields in Warped Extra Dimensions

    This work sets up a general theoretical framework to study stability of models with a warped extra dimension where N scalar fields couple minimally to gravity. Our analysis encompasses Randall-Sundrum models with branes and bulk scalars, and general domain-wall models. We derive the Schrodinger equation governing the spin-0 spectrum of perturbations of such a system. This result is specialized to potentials generated using fake supergravity, and we show that models without branes are free of tachyonic modes. Turning to the existence of zero modes, we prove a criterion which relates the number of normalizable zero modes to the parities of the scalar fields. Constructions with definite parity and only odd scalars are shown to be free of zero modes and are hence perturbatively stable. We give two explicit examples of domain-wall models with a soft wall, one which admits a zero mode and one which does not. The latter is an example of a model that stabilizes a compact extra dimension using only bulk scalars and does not require dynamical branes.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures; v2: minor changes to text, references added, matches published versio

    Higgs Phenomenology in Warped Extra-Dimensions with a 4th Generation

    We study a warped extra-dimension scenario where the Standard Model fields lie in the bulk, with the addition of a fourth family of fermions. We concentrate on the flavor structure of the Higgs couplings with fermions in the flavor anarchy ansatz. Even without a fourth family, these couplings will be generically misaligned with respect to the SM fermion mass matrices. The presence of the fourth family typically enhances the misalignment effects and we show that one should expect them to be highly non-symmetrical in the (34){(34)} inter-generational mixing. The radiative corrections from the new fermions and their flavor violating couplings to the Higgs affect negligibly known experimental precision measurements such as the oblique parameters and ZbbˉZ\to b {\bar b} or Zμ+μZ \to \mu^+ \mu^-. On the other hand, ΔF=1,2\Delta F=1,2 processes, mediated by tree-level Higgs exchange, as well as radiative corrections to bsγb \to s \gamma and μeγ\mu \to e\gamma put some generic pressure on the allowed size of the flavor violating couplings. But more importantly, these couplings will alter the Higgs decay patterns as well as those of the new fermions, and produce very interesting new signals associated to Higgs phenomenology in high energy colliders. These might become very important indirect signals for these type of models as they would be present even when the KK mass scale is high and no heavy KK particle is discovered.Comment: 39 pages, 6 figure

    The radion and the perturbative metric in RS1

    We calculate the linearized metric perturbations in the five dimensional two-brane model of Randall and Sundrum. In a carefully chosen gauge, we write down and decouple Einstein equations for the perturbations and get the final and simple perturbative metric ansatz. This ansatz turns out to be equal to the linear expansion of the metric solution of Charmousis et al. \cite{rubakov}. We show that this ansatz, the metric ansatz of Boos et al. \cite{boos} and the one of Das and Mitov \cite{das} are not incompatible, as it appears on the surface, but completely equivalent by an allowed gauge transformation that we give.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, LaTeX, typos fixed, 1 reference adde

    Testing Gluino Spin with Three-Body Decays

    We examine the possibility of distinguishing a supersymmetric gluino from a Kaluza-Klein gluon of universal extra dimensions (UED) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We focus on the case when all kinematically allowed tree-level decays of this particle are 3-body decays into two jets and a massive daughter (typically weak gaugino or Kaluza-Klein weak gauge boson). We show that the shapes of the dijet invariant mass distributions differ significantly in the two models, as long as the mass of the decaying particle mA is substantially larger than the mass of the massive daughter mB. We present a simple analysis estimating the number of events needed to distinguish between the two models under idealized conditions. For example, for mA/mB=10, we find the required number of events to be of order several thousand, which should be available at the LHC within a few years. This conclusion is confirmed by a parton level Monte Carlo study which includes the effects of experimental cuts and the combinatoric background.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

    Gluino Decay as a Probe of High Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

    A supersymmetric standard model with heavier scalar supersymmetric particles has many attractive features. If the scalar mass scale is O(10 - 10^4) TeV, the standard model like Higgs boson with mass around 125 GeV, which is strongly favored by the LHC experiment, can be realized. However, in this scenario the scalar particles are too heavy to be produced at the LHC. In addition, if the scalar mass is much less than O(10^4) TeV, the lifetime of the gluino is too short to be measured. Therefore, it is hard to probe the scalar particles at a collider. However, a detailed study of the gluino decay reveals that two body decay of the gluino carries important information on the scalar scale.     Employment Expectations and Gross Flows by Type of Work Contract

    There is growing interest in understanding firms’ temporary and permanent employment practices and how institutional changes shape them. Using data on Spanish establishments, we examine: (a) how employers adjust temporary and permanent job and worker flows to prior employment expectations, and (b) how the 1994 and 1997 labour reforms promoting permanent employment affected establishments’ employment practices. Generally, establishments’ prior employment expectations are realized through changes in all job and worker flows. However, establishments uniquely rely on temporary hires as a buffer to confront diminishing long-run employment expectations.     Sparticle masses in deflected mirage mediation

    We discuss the sparticle mass patterns that can be realized in deflected mirage mediation scenario of supersymmetry breaking, in which the moduli, anomaly, and gauge mediations all contribute to the MSSM soft parameters. Analytic expression of low energy soft parameters and also the sfermion mass sum rules are derived, which can be used to interpret the experimentally measured sparticle masses within the framework of the most general mixed moduli-gauge-anomaly mediation.     Initial determination of the spins of the gluino and squarks at LHC

    In principle particle spins can be measured from their production cross sections once their mass is approximately known. The method works in practice because spins are quantized and cross sections depend strongly on spins. It can be used to determine, for example, the spin of the top quark. Direct application of this method to supersymmetric theories will have to overcome the challenge of measuring mass at the LHC, which could require high statistics. In this article, we propose a method of measuring the spins of the colored superpatners by combining rate information for several channels and a set of kinematical variables, without directly measuring their masses. We argue that such a method could lead to an early determination of the spin of gluino and squarks. This method can be applied to the measurement of spin of other new physics particles and more general scenarios.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, minor change
