    PIDT: A Novel Decision Tree Algorithm Based on Parameterised Impurities and Statistical Pruning Approaches

    In the process of constructing a decision tree, the criteria for selecting the splitting attributes influence the performance of the model produced by the decision tree algorithm. The most well-known criteria such as Shannon entropy and Gini index, suffer from the lack of adaptability to the datasets. This paper presents novel splitting attribute selection criteria based on some families of pa-rameterised impurities that we proposed here to be used in the construction of optimal decision trees. These criteria rely on families of strict concave functions that define the new generalised parameterised impurity measures which we ap-plied in devising and implementing our PIDT novel decision tree algorithm. This paper proposes also the S-condition based on statistical permutation tests, whose purpose is to ensure that the reduction in impurity, or gain, for the selected attrib-ute is statistically significant. We implemented the S-pruning procedure based on the S-condition, to prevent model overfitting. These methods were evaluated on a number of simulated and benchmark datasets. Experimental results suggest that by tuning the parameters of the impurity measures and by using our S-pruning method, we obtain better decision tree classifiers with the PIDT algorithm

    Evidence of West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in wild birds and WNV RNA negativity in mosquitoes of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, Romania, 2016

    West Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic flavivirus whose transmission cycle in nature includes wild birds as amplifying hosts and ornithophilic mosquito vectors. Bridge vectors can transmit WNV to mammal species potentially causing West Nile Fever. Wild bird migration is a mode of WNV introduction into new areas. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR) is a major stopover of wild birds migrating between Europe and Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of WNV in the DDBR during the 2016 transmission season in wild birds and mosquitoes. Blood from 68 wild birds (nine different species) trapped at four different locations was analyzed by competitive ELISA and Virus Neutralization Test (VNT), revealing positive results in 8/68 (11.8%) of the wild birds by ELISA of which six samples (three from juvenile birds) were confirmed seropositive by VNT. Mosquitoes (n = 6523, 5 genera) were trapped with CDC Mini Light traps at two locations and in one location resting mosquitoes were caught. The presence of WNV RNA was tested in 134 pools by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). None of the pools was positive for WNV-specific RNA.     Copper(II) complexes with mixed heterocycle ligands as promising antibacterial and antitumor species

    Complexes with mixed ligands [Cu(N-N)2_2(pmtp)](ClO4_4)2_2 ((1) N-N: 2,2′-bipyridine(2) L: 1,10-phenanthroline and pmpt: 5-phenyl-7-methyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine) were synthesized and structurally and biologically characterized. Compound (1) crystallizes into space group Pa and (2) in P-1. Both complexes display an intermediate stereochemistry between the two five-coordinated ones. The biological tests indicated that the two compounds exhibited superoxide scavenging capacity, intercalative DNA properties, and metallonuclease activity. Tests on various cell systems indicated that the two complexes neither interfere with the proliferation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae or BJ healthy skin cells, nor cause hemolysis in the active concentration range. Nevertheless, the compounds showed antibacterial potential, with complex (2) being significantly more active than complex (1) against all tested bacterial strains, both in planktonic and biofilm growth state. Both complexes exhibited a very good activity against B16 melanoma cells, with a higher specificity being displayed by compound (1). Taken together, the results indicate that complexes (1) and (2) have specific biological relevance, with potential for the development of antitumor or antimicrobial drugs
