Determination of Interval Depth of Subsurface Layers by Velocity Analysis of Seismic Reflection Data, in Part of Niger Delta Basin, Nigeria
Seismic reflection data obtained from 3 – D survey in part of the Niger delta basin, Nigeria was processed using Velocity Computation (VELCOM), an interactive velocity analysis interpretation program. The application uses the principle of Apparent Velocity Picking, Normal Moveout (NMO) Correction and Stacking. Velocity intervals and stacking velocity for 8 Common Depth Points (CDPs) were obtained. Interval velocity ranges between 1814 - 5579 ms-1 and Stacking velocity (Vs) ranges between 1814 – 3639 ms-1. Both velocities increase with depth, with interval velocity more steeply than Stacking velocity within the same interval depth. The corresponding depths to the reflecting surfaces, ranging from 554 – 10033m, were obtained, which led to the interval depths of layers ranging from 31 – 1180m. The result of this velocity analysis can be applied in NMO correction, calculating depths from reflection times, horizons identifications, the recognitions of lithology, detection of high pressure zone and migration. Ultrasound image attributes of human ovarian dominant follicles during natural and oral contraceptive cycles
BACKGROUND: Computer-assisted analyses were used to examine ultrasound image attributes of human dominant ovarian follicles that developed during natural and oral contraceptive (OC) cycles. We hypothesized that image attributes of natural cycle follicles would quantitatively differ from those in OC cycles and that OC cycle follicles would possess image attributes indicative of atresia. METHODS: Dominant ovarian follicles of 18 clinically normal women were compared using transvaginal ultrasonography for the 7 days before ovulation during a natural cycle (n = 9) or the 7 days before peak estradiol in women using OC (n = 11). Follicles were analyzed using region and line techniques designed to compare the image attributes numerical pixel value (NPV), pixel heterogeneity (PH) and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: NPV was higher in OC cycle follicles with region analysis and tended to be higher with line analysis (p = 0.005 and p = 0.06, respectively). No differences were observed in two other image attributes (AUC and PH), measured with either technique, between natural and OC cycle follicles. CONCLUSION: The increased NPV value of OC cycle follicles and lack of differences in PH and AUC values between natural cycle and OC cycle follicles did not support the hypothesis that OC cycle follicles would show ultrasonographically detectable signs of atresia. Image attributes observed in OC cycle follicles were not clearly indicative of atresia nor were they large enough to preclude preovulatory physiologic status in OC cycle follicles
Evaluation of Sensory Attributes of Complementary Meals made from Malted Yellow Maize (Zea mays L.) and Sprouted Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) Flour Blends available in South Western Nigeria
The need to measure, analyze and interpret the reactions of people to complementary food products as perceived by their senses is important. This will provide valid and reliable information to the research, production and marketing departments in order for the management team to make sound business decisions about the perceived sensory properties of the complementary food product(s). This study evaluated the sensory attributes of complementary meals made from malted yellow maize (Zea mays L.) and sprouted cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour blends using standard methods on a 5-point hedonic scale ratings with 105 trained adult female evaluators. The mean scores ranges sensory evaluation attributes were appearance (3.58 to 4.24), taste (3.58 to 4.34), consistency (3.76 to 4.04), smell (3.47 to 4.12) and overall acceptability (3.31 to 4.20) of produced complementary food. ANOVA revealed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the appearance (F = 8.82), taste (F = 10.24), smell (F = 6.53) and overall acceptability (F = 8.19) of the complementary food produced. The study concluded that the diets prepared from the sample with 20% sprouted cowpea and 80% malted yellow maize flours substitution had better acceptability than the other test samples. Therefore, the need to exploit the positive attributes of quality cowpea and yellow maize without compromising its general acceptability as this will at the end, contribute to the improvement of health and nutrition right from childhood
Learning needs analysis to guide teaching evidence-based medicine: knowledge and beliefs amongst trainees from various specialities
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We undertook a needs assessment exercise using questionnaire survey of junior doctors' knowledge and beliefs concerning evidence-based medicine (EBM) and critical literature appraisal, as this is a core competence in postgraduate medical education.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We surveyed 317 junior doctors in various specialities in the UK West Midlands Deanery. Using validated questionnaires we compared the needs of different trainee groups. Results overall were internally consistent (Cronbach's alpha 0.929).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Respondents' generally felt that they had poor training in EBM (Mean score 2.2, possible range 1 – 6) and that they needed more education (Mean score 5.3, possible range 1–6). Male trainees felt more confident at evaluating statistical tests than females (p = 0.002). Female trainees considered patient choice above the evidence more often than males (p = 0.038). Trainees from surgical speciality felt more confident at assessing research evidence (p = 0.009) whereas those from medical speciality felt more confident at evaluating statistical tests (p = 0.038) than other specialities. However, non-surgical specialities tended to believe that EBM had little impact on practice (p = 0.029). Respondents who had been qualified for 11 years or over felt overall more confident in their knowledge relating to EBM than those who had been qualified less than 10 years. In particular, they felt more confident at being able to assess study designs (p = < 0.001) and the general worth of research papers (p = < 0.001). Trainees with prior research experience were less likely to find original work confusing (p = 0.003) and felt more confident that they can assess research evidence (p = < 0.001) compared to those without previous research experience. Trainees without previous research experience felt that clinical judgement was more important than evidence (p = < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There is a perceived deficit in postgraduate doctors' EBM knowledge and critical appraisal skills. Learning needs vary according to gender, place of basic medical qualification, time since graduation, prior research experience and speciality. EBM training curricular development should take into account the findings of our needs assessment study.</p
Implementing evidence-based medicine in general practice: a focus group based study
BACKGROUND: Over the past years concerns are rising about the use of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in health care. The calls for an increase in the practice of EBM, seem to be obstructed by many barriers preventing the implementation of evidence-based thinking and acting in general practice. This study aims to explore the barriers of Flemish GPs (General Practitioners) to the implementation of EBM in routine clinical work and to identify possible strategies for integrating EBM in daily work. METHODS: We used a qualitative research strategy to gather and analyse data. We organised focus groups between September 2002 and April 2003. The focus group data were analysed using a combined strategy of 'between-case' analysis and 'grounded theory approach'. Thirty-one general practitioners participated in four focus groups. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit participants. RESULTS: A basic classification model documents the influencing factors and actors on a micro-, meso- as well as macro-level. Patients, colleagues, competences, logistics and time were identified on the micro-level (the GPs' individual practice), commercial and consumer organisations on the meso-level (institutions, organisations) and health care policy, media and specific characteristics of evidence on the macro-level (policy level and international scientific community). Existing barriers and possible strategies to overcome these barriers were described. CONCLUSION: In order to implement EBM in routine general practice, an integrated approach on different levels needs to be developed
The growth of a culture of evidence-based obstetrics in South Africa: a qualitative case study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While the past two decades have seen a shift towards evidence-based obstetrics and midwifery, the process through which a culture of evidence-based practice develops and is sustained within particular fields of clinical practice has not been well documented, particularly in LMICs (low- and middle-income countries). Forming part of a broader qualitative study of evidence-based policy making, this paper describes the development of a culture of evidence-based practice amongst maternal health policy makers and senior academic obstetricians in South Africa</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A qualitative case-study approach was used. This included a literature review, a policy document review, a timeline of key events and the collection and analysis of 15 interviews with policy makers and academic clinicians involved in these policy processes and sampled using a purposive approach. The data was analysed thematically.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The concept of evidence-based medicine became embedded in South African academic obstetrics at a very early stage in relation to the development of the concept internationally. The diffusion of this concept into local academic obstetrics was facilitated by contact and exchange between local academic obstetricians, opinion leaders in international research and structures promoting evidence-based practice. Furthermore the growing acceptance of the concept was stimulated locally through the use of existing professional networks and meetings to share ideas and the contribution of local researchers to building the evidence base for obstetrics both locally and internationally. As a testimony to the extent of the diffusion of evidence-based medicine, South Africa has strongly evidence-based policies for maternal health.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case study shows that the combined efforts of local and international researchers can create a culture of evidence-based medicine within one country. It also shows that doing so required time and perseverance from international researchers combined with a readiness by local researchers to receive and actively promote the practice.</p
Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research
