    Background - Looked after young people (LAYP) have poorer sexual health outcomes than their peers. However, research seldom examines the health needs of, or intervenes with, this group. The aim of the current study was to identify LAYP's perceived sexual health needs and explore sources of sexual health information, knowledge levels, concerns and service preferences. Methods - Looked after young people within Fife, Scotland, were recruited through their workers and carers to participate in qualitative semi-structured interviews. Those aged 12–19 years were targeted for recruitment. National Health Services ethics approval was granted. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo. Results - Interviews were conducted with 10 LAYP. Key themes included gaps in knowledge, and gaps between knowledge and behaviour. Being ‘looked after’ may have negative consequences on knowledge, sources of support and safer sex. A flexible, one-to-one service, aimed at several lifestyle issues, not solely sexual health, was preferred by respondents. Conclusion - Looked after young people require support to bridge the gap between knowledge and behaviour and several theories relevant to the findings have been identified. Participants desired more support around a range of health issues, which may come from school, workers and carers, as well as health professionals. Further research examining effective interventions with this group is crucial to improve outcomes

    A Sub-Damped Lyα\alpha Absorber with Unusual Abundances: Evidence of Gas Recycling in a Low-Redshift Galaxy Group

    Using Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph G140M spectroscopy, we investigate an absorption-line system at zz=0.07489 in the spectrum of the quasi-stellar object PG 1543+489 (zQSOz_{QSO}=0.401). The sightline passes within ρ=66\rho = 66 kpc of an edge-on 2L2L^* disk galaxy at a similar redshift, but the galaxy belongs to a group with four other galaxies within ρ=160\rho =160 kpc. We detect H I [log NN(H I/cm2cm^{-2}) = 19.12±\pm0.04] as well as N I, Mg II, Si II, and Si III, from which we measure a gas-phase abundance of [N/H] = 1.0±0.1-1.0\pm 0.1. Photoionization models indicate that the nitrogen-to-silicon relative abundance is solar, yet magnesium is underabundant by a factor of \approx 2. We also report spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy of the nearby galaxy, and we extract its rotation curve. The galaxy's metallicity is 8×\approx 8 \times higher than [N/H] in the absorber, and interestingly, the absorber velocities suggest that the gas at ρ=\rho = 66 kpc is corotating with the galaxy's stellar disk, possibly with an inflow component. These characteristics could indicate that this sub-damped Lyα\alpha absorber system arises in a "cold-accretion" flow. However, the absorber abundance patterns are peculiar. We hypothesize that the gas was ejected from its galaxy of origin (or perhaps is a result of tidal debris from interactions between the group galaxies) with a solar nitrogen abundance, but that subsequently mixed with (and was diluted by) gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) or group. If the gas is bound to the nearby galaxy, this system may be an example of the gas "recycling" predicted by theoretical galaxy simulations.     Discrete element modeling and fibre optical measurements for fluidized bed spray granulation

    Spout fluidized beds are frequently used for the production of granules or\ud particles through granulation. The products find application in a large variety of\ud applications, for example detergents, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and food. Spout fluidized\ud beds have a number of advantageous properties, such as a high mobility of the particles,\ud which prevents undesired agglomeration and yields excellent heat transfer properties. The\ud particle growth mechanism in a spout fluidized bed as function of particle-droplet\ud interaction has a profound influence on the particle morphology and thus on the product\ud quality. Nevertheless, little is known about the details of the granulation process. This is\ud mainly due to the fact that the granulation process is not visually accessible. In this work\ud we use fundamental, deterministic models to enable the detailed investigation of\ud granulation behaviour in a spout fluidized bed. A discrete element model is used\ud describing the dynamics of the continuous gas-phase and the discrete droplets and\ud particles. For each element momentum balances are solved. The momentum transfer\ud among each of the three phases is described in detail at the level of individual elements.\ud The results from the discrete element model simulations are compared with local\ud measurements of particle volume fractions as well as particle velocities by using a novel\ud fibre optical probe in a fluidized bed of 400 mm I.D. Simulations and experiments were\ud carried out for two different cases using Geldart B type aluminium oxide particles: a\ud freely bubbling fluidized bed and a spout fluidized bed with the presence of droplets. It is\ud demonstrated how the discrete element model can be used to obtain information about the\ud interaction of the discrete phases, i.e. the growth zone in a spout fluidized bed. Eventually\ud this kind of information can be used to obtain closure information required in more coarse\ud grained model

    This program description document describes the program structure and the design details of a CDC 6600 FORTRAN 4 digital computer program, BUCLAP2, which uses minimum energy principles to do an elastic stability analysis of curved and flat laminated rectangular long plates subjected to combined inplane normal and shear loads.     Reliability of the Clinical Application of a Mechanical Inclinometer in Measuring Glenohumeral Motion

    Objective: Establish intra- and inter-examiner reliability of glenohumeral range of motion (ROM) measures taken by a single-clinician using a mechanical inclinometer. Design: A single-session, repeated-measure, randomized, counterbalanced design. Setting: Athletic Training laboratory. Participants: Ten college-aged volunteers (9 right-hand dominant; 4 males, 6 females; age=23.2±2.4y, mass=73±16kg, height=170±8cm) without shoulder or neck injuries within one year. Interventions: Two Certified Athletic Trainers separately assessed passive glenohumeral (GH) internal (IR) and external (ER) rotation bilaterally. Each clinician secured the inclinometer to each subject’s distal forearm using elastic straps. Clinicians followed standard procedures for assessing ROM, with the participants supine on a standard treatment table with 90° of elbow flexion. A second investigator recorded the angle. Clinicians measured all shoulders once to assess inter-clinician reliability and eight shoulders twice to assess intra-clinician reliability. We used SPSS 14.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) to calculate standard error of measure (SEM) and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) to evaluate intra- and inter-clinician reliability. Main Outcome Measures: Dependent variables were degrees of IR, ER, glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) and total arc of rotation. We calculated GIRD as the bilateral difference in IR (nondominant–dominant) and total arc for each shoulder (IR+ER). Results: Intra-clinician reliability for each examiner was excellent (ICC[1,1] range=0.90-0.96; SEM=2.2°-2.5°) for all measures. Examiners displayed excellent inter-clinician reliability (ICC[2,1] range=0.79-0.97; SEM=1.7°-3.0°) for all measures except nondominant IR which had good reliability(0.72). Conclusions: Results suggest that clinicians can achieve reliable measures of GH rotation and GIRD using a single-clinician technique and an inexpensive, readily available mechanical inclinometer

    The unexpected faintness of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), as measured by two teams, has been interpreted as evidence that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. We review the current challenges to this interpretation and seek to answer whether the cosmological implications are compelling.
