Diablo Canyon power plant site ecological study Quarterly Report no. 17: July 1 - September 30, 1977
During the quarter a total of 38 random 30-m2
and 152 random 1/4-m2 subtidal stations were
surveyed. Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens,
densities remained very low. There was a continued
decline in densities of giant red sea
urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, in
Diablo Cove as well as the North Control area.
The annual shore census of bull kelp, Nereocystis
luetkeana, revealed the lowest number of plants
in the surface canopy in Diablo Cove since 1973. The subtidal station data supported this observation.
Sea otter, Enhydra lutris, observations were
continued. A small group of otters continued
to raft in the Cove east of Lion Rock. Some
of these otters probably forage as far south as
South Cove.
The survey of 11 random intertidal stations
completed our Upwelling sampling effort. (16pp.
Wage-Price Dynamics and Deflation in Hong Kong
This paper provides empirical evidence on the dynamics of prices and wages in Hong Kong. The results imply that the deflation in Hong Kong since 1997 can be understood using a conventional macroeconomic framework wherein foreign influences constitute the basic underlying shocks, and adjustment processes in domestic wages and prices determine the details of the transmission mechanism. Our results indicate that the decline in local nominal prices owes much to declining prices of imported intermediate goods. The negative output gap and the increase in unemployment experienced during the deflation period also have their origin in foreign shocks, but the domestic wage adjustment process constitutes an important contributing factor.Deflation, wage-price dynamics, Hong Kong data.

range we prove the existence for all time of radially symmetric measure
solutions that are monotone decreasing as a function of the radius, thus
allowing for continuation of the solution past the blowup time. The monotone
constraint on the data is consistent with the typical blowup profiles observed
in recent numerical studies of these singularities. We prove monotonicity is
preserved for all time, even after blowup, in contrast to the case
where radially symmetric solutions are known to lose monotonicity. In the case
of the Newtonian potential (), under the assumption of radial
symmetry the equation can be transformed into the inviscid Burgers equation on
a half line. This enables us to prove preservation of monotonicity using the
classical theory of conservation laws. In the case and at
the critical exponent we exhibit initial data in for which the
solution immediately develops a Dirac mass singularity. This extends recent
work on the local ill-posedness of solutions at the critical exponent.Comment: 30 page
Global Action-Angle Variables for Non-Commutative Integrable Systems
In this paper we analyze the obstructions to the existence of global
action-angle variables for regular non-commutative integrable systems (NCI
systems) on Poisson manifolds. In contrast with local action-angle variables,
which exist as soon as the fibers of the momentum map of such an integrable
system are compact, global action-angle variables rarely exist. This fact was
first observed and analyzed by Duistermaat in the case of Liouville integrable
systems on symplectic manifolds and later by Dazord-Delzant in the case of
non-commutative integrable systems on symplectic manifolds. In our more general
case where phase space is an arbitrary Poisson manifold, there are more
obstructions, as we will show both abstractly and on concrete examples. Our
approach makes use of a few new features which we introduce: the action bundle
and the action lattice bundle of the NCI system (these bundles are canonically
defined) and three foliations (the action, angle and transverse foliation),
whose existence is also subject to obstructions, often of a cohomological
nature
Is There a Euro Effect on Trade? An Application of End-of-Sample Structural Break Tests for Panel Data
Whether trade has increased due to the Euro is a question at the heart of lively policy debates and academic research. We revisit the question with a new, more powerful econometric test for end-of-sample breaks to formally identify the timing and duration of the structural break implied by the ÒRose effectÓ on the Euro AreaÕs trade. We find a significant break in 1999Q1 when using a traditional gravity equa- tion, corroborating the general consensus in the literature. However, we find that this break is short lived. Furthermore, we show that the break can be explained both by the marked decrease in real interest rates across the Euro Area and by deepening European institutional integration.Gravity equation, International Trade, Common Currency, Structural break tests in panel data, Euro Area

During the period January 1 - March 31, 1975 we relocated
and remarked five permanent subtidal stations and surveyed 28 random and two permanent intertidal stations. We failed to find a single giant red sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, around station 16 during a dive in March. Abalone, Haliotis spp., numbers decreased at random intertidal stations in North Diablo Cove and the North Control Area.
The commerical sea urchin fishery was inactive, while the commerical red abalone, H. rufescens, fishery continued to operate around Pecho Rock.
Counts of sea otters south of Point Buchon increased significantly, 20 to 30 otters are now feeding just north of Pecho Rock.
Eight random fishery stations in Diablo Cove, Lion Rock Cove and the North Control Area yielded a substantial increase in catch-per-unit-of-effort. (15pp.

During the period October 1 - December 31, 1974, a total of
six permanent subtidal stations and ten random intertidal stations were surveyed.
Red tides and rough seas limited both the commerical abalone and sea urchin fishery activities. Most activity was concentrated between Diablo Cove and Pecho Rock. Divers, however, did work urchin beds as far north as Lion Rock.
Sea otter counts have remained relatively stable with almost all individuals being observed north of Lion Rock.
Fourteen random fishing stations were completed. Low catch rates reflected fishing success in areas with a heavy brown algae surface canopy. (12pp.
Diablo Canyon Power Plant site ecological study Quarterly Report No. 2; October 1 - December 31, 1973
During the period October 1 - December 31, 1973, Fall surveys of permanent subtidal stations were completed with one station being surveyed. We were unable to locate 3
subtidal stations.
Intertidal studies were initiated in November. A total of 12
random stations was surveyed.
Interviews were conducted with commercial abalone fishermen
working between Pt. Buchon to Pecho Rock. We continued to
monitor the sea otter herd foraging between Pt. Buchon and
Lion Rock.
Progress was achieved in the abalone temperature tolerance
studies when a successful spawning occurred. (20pp.
