    A 2:1 cocrystal of 6,13-dihydropentacene and pentacene

    6,13-Dihydropentacene and pentacene cocrystallize in a ratio of 2:1, i.e. C22H16·0.5C22H14, during vapour transport of commercial pentacene in a gas flow. The crystal structure is monoclinic, space group P21/n, and contains one dihydropentacene molecule and half a pentacene molecule in the asymmetric unit.

    Localisation of RNAs into the germ plasm of vitellogenic xenopus oocytes

    We have studied the localisation of mRNAs in full-grown Xenopus laevis oocytes by injecting fluorescent RNAs, followed by confocal microscopy of the oocyte cortex. Concentrating on RNA encoding the Xenopus Nanos homologue, nanos1 (formerly Xcat2), we find that it consistently localised into aggregated germ plasm ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles, independently of cytoskeletal integrity. This implies that a diffusion/entrapment-mediated mechanism is active, as previously reported for previtellogenic oocytes. Sometimes this was accompanied by localisation into scattered particles of the “late”, Vg1/VegT pathway; occasionally only late pathway localisation was seen. The Xpat RNA behaved in an identical fashion and for neither RNA was the localisation changed by any culture conditions tested. The identity of the labelled RNP aggregates as definitive germ plasm was confirmed by their inclusion of abundant mitochondria and co-localisation with the germ plasm protein Hermes. Further, the nanos1/Hermes RNP particles are interspersed with those containing the germ plasm protein Xpat. These aggregates may be followed into the germ plasm of unfertilized eggs, but with a notable reduction in its quantity, both in terms of injected molecules and endogenous structures. Our results conflict with previous reports that there is no RNA localisation in large oocytes, and that during mid-oogenesis even germ plasm RNAs localise exclusively by the late pathway. We find that in mid oogenesis nanos1 RNA also localises to germ plasm but also by the late pathway. Late pathway RNAs, Vg1 and VegT, also may localise into germ plasm. Our results support the view that mechanistically the two modes of localisation are extremely similar, and that in an injection experiment RNAs might utilise either pathway, the distinction in fates being very subtle and subject to variation. We discuss these results in relation to their biological significance and the results of others

The first part describes optimum setting of diagnostic equipment - mainly for optical diagnostic methods. The second part describes some phenomena encountered during switching process under real switching conditions - arc roots movement (cathode and anode spots). These phenomena are not only important for experimental study itself but also form necessary input data for numerical models and their validation

    Investigation and Numerical Simulation of a High-Current AC Circuit Breaker

    The article is devoted to the study of the high-current AC circuit breaker. The results of the study are presented for various configurations of the arc divider. The study includes methods of spectral diagnostics and high-speed camera shooting synchronized with the electrical characteristics of the circuit breaker (current, voltage) in time. The obtained results allow to determine the composition of the plasma and dynamics of changes in the composition of the discharge in time. Calculation of the plasma composition and properties is made according to the obtained data, which makes it possible to take into account the products of circuit breaker materials ablation in numerical simulation. Non-stationary two-dimensional mathematical model with a moving mesh is developed. The obtained results allow to correct and verify the developed mathematical model of the circuit breaker operation.     CD44 targeted delivery of siRNA by using HA-decorated nanotechnologies for KRAS silencing in cancer treatment

    KRAS is a small GTPase that regulates cell proliferation and survival. In tumors, the KRAS gene is mutated, and leading to unregulated tumor growth. Despite the recognized importance of KRAS in cancer, attempts to develop small molecule inhibitors have proved unsuccessful. An alternative strategy is gene silencing and the use of small nucleic acid sequences (e.g. siRNA, shRNA), has been reported to successfully downregulate KRAS. In this study we developed ternary nanocomplexes to deliver an anti-KRAS siRNA to colorectal cancer cells, exploiting the interaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) with CD44 as a means to achieve selective targeting of CD44-positive cancer cells. Two different polycations, poly(hexamethylene biguanide) and chitosan, were complexed with siRNA and coated with HA. Physico-chemical properties and stability of nanoparticles were characterized, including size, surface charge, and degree of siRNA protection. We demonstrate nanoparticle internalization (flow cytometry), siRNA cytosolic release (confocal microscopy) and KRAS silencing (RT-qPCR) in CD44+/KRAS+ colorectal cancer cell line, HCT-116. Further we demonstrate that the uptake of HA-decorated nanoparticles in cancer cells is higher when co-cultured with fibroblasts

    Analysis of the creep response of a fine-grained magnesium-rare earths alloy produced by rapid solidification

    The creep response of a experimental Mg-Zn-Ca-Ce-La alloy produced by rapid solidification was investigated at temperatures ranging from 498 to 548K, under stresses from 7 to 50MPa. The creep curves exhibited a short primary region, during which the strain rate decreases, followed by a short minimum creep rate range, and by a very long tertiary stage. The analysis of the creep rate dependence on applied stress at different strain suggested that the creep mechanisms was cross slip on non-basal plane, or alternatively glide of dislocation on pyramidal slip system controlled by nucleation of kink motion

    How are "teaching the teachers" courses in evidence based medicine evaluated? A systematic review

    Background Teaching of evidence-based medicine (EBM) has become widespread in medical education. Teaching the teachers (TTT) courses address the increased teaching demand and the need to improve effectiveness of EBM teaching. We conducted a systematic review of assessment tools for EBM TTT courses. To summarise and appraise existing assessment methods for teaching the teachers courses in EBM by a systematic review. Methods We searched PubMed, BioMed, EmBase, Cochrane and Eric databases without language restrictions and included articles that assessed its participants. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by two reviewers. Results Of 1230 potentially relevant studies, five papers met the selection criteria. There were no specific assessment tools for evaluating effectiveness of EBM TTT courses. Some of the material available might be useful in initiating the development of such an assessment tool. Conclusion There is a need for the development of educationally sound assessment tools for teaching the teachers courses in EBM, without which it would be impossible to ascertain if such courses have the desired effect

    We have found weak long range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-two-dimensional insulating oxide KCr3(OD)6(SO4)2 KCr_3(OD)_6(SO_4)_2 which contains Cr3+^{3+} S=3/2 ions on a kagom\'{e} lattice. In a sample with \approx 76% occupancy of the chromium sites the ordered moment is 1.1(3)μB\mu_B per chromium ion which is only one third of the N\'{e}el value gμBS=3μBg\mu_BS=3\mu_B. The magnetic unit cell equals the chemical unit cell, a situation which is favored by inter-plane interactions. Gapless quantum spin-fluctuations (Δ/kB>\Delta/k_B > T_N=1.6Karethedominantcontributiontothespincorrelationfunction, = 1.6K are the dominant contribution to the spin correlation function, S(Q,\omega)$ in the ordered phase.Comment: 18 pages, RevTex/Latex, with 6 figure
