Detection of Sugar-Lectin Interactions by Multivalent Dendritic Sugar Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) decorated with sugar
functionalized poly (propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer is a very sensitive
platform to quantitatively detect carbohydrate recognizing proteins, namely,
lectins. The changes in electrical conductivity of SWNT in field effect
transistor device due to carbohydrate - protein interactions form the basis of
present study. The mannose sugar attached PETIM dendrimers undergo charge -
transfer interactions with the SWNT. The changes in the conductance of the
dendritic sugar functionalized SWNT after addition of lectins in varying
concentrations were found to follow the Langmuir type isotherm, giving the
concanavalin A (Con A) - mannose affinity constant to be 8.5 x 106 M-1. The
increase in the device conductance observed after adding 10 nM of Con A is same
as after adding 20 \muM of a non - specific lectin peanut agglutinin, showing
the high specificity of the Con A - mannose interactions. The specificity of
sugar-lectin interactions was characterized further by observing significant
shifts in Raman modes of the SWNT.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Anxiety and depression with neurogenesis defects in exchange protein directly activated by cAMP 2-deficient mice are ameliorated by a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, Prozac
Intracellular cAMP and serotonin are important modulators of anxiety and depression. Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) also known as Prozac, is widely used against depression, potentially by activating cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) through protein kinase A (PKA). However, the role of Epac1 and Epac2 (Rap guanine nucleotide exchange factors, RAPGEF3 and RAPGEF4, respectively) as potential downstream targets of SSRI/cAMP in mood regulations is not yet clear. Here, we investigated the phenotypes of Epac1 (Epac1− / −) or Epac2 (Epac2− / −) knockout mice by comparing them with their wild-type counterparts. Surprisingly, Epac2− / − mice exhibited a wide range of mood disorders, including anxiety and depression with learning and memory deficits in contextual and cued fear-conditioning tests without affecting Epac1 expression or PKA activity. Interestingly, rs17746510, one of the three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in RAPGEF4 associated with cognitive decline in Chinese Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, was significantly correlated with apathy and mood disturbance, whereas no significant association was observed between RAPGEF3 SNPs and the risk of AD or neuropsychiatric inventory scores. To further determine the detailed role of Epac2 in SSRI/serotonin/cAMP-involved mood disorders, we treated Epac2− / − mice with a SSRI, Prozac. The alteration in open field behavior and impaired hippocampal cell proliferation in Epac2− / − mice were alleviated by Prozac. Taken together, Epac2 gene polymorphism is a putative risk factor for mood disorders in AD patients in part by affecting the hippocampal neurogenesis.published_or_final_versio
Universal Statistics of the Scattering Coefficient of Chaotic Microwave Cavities
We consider the statistics of the scattering coefficient S of a chaotic
microwave cavity coupled to a single port. We remove the non-universal effects
of the coupling from the experimental S data using the radiation impedance
obtained directly from the experiments. We thus obtain the normalized, complex
scattering coefficient whose Probability Density Function (PDF) is predicted to
be universal in that it depends only on the loss (quality factor) of the
cavity. We compare experimental PDFs of the normalized scattering coefficients
with those obtained from Random Matrix Theory (RMT), and find excellent
agreement. The results apply to scattering measurements on any wave chaotic

Kaplan-Narayanan-Neuberger lattice fermions pass a perturbative test
We test perturbatively a recent scheme for implementing chiral fermions on
the lattice, proposed by Kaplan and modified by Narayanan and Neuberger, using
as our testing ground the chiral Schwinger model. The scheme is found to
reproduce the desired form of the effective action, whose real part is gauge
invariant and whose imaginary part gives the correct anomaly in the continuum
limit, once technical problems relating to the necessary infinite extent of the
extra dimension are properly addressed. The indications from this study are
that the Kaplan--Narayanan--Neuberger (KNN) scheme has a good chance at being a

On the Usability of Probably Approximately Correct Implication Bases
We revisit the notion of probably approximately correct implication bases
from the literature and present a first formulation in the language of formal
concept analysis, with the goal to investigate whether such bases represent a
suitable substitute for exact implication bases in practical use-cases. To this
end, we quantitatively examine the behavior of probably approximately correct
implication bases on artificial and real-world data sets and compare their
precision and recall with respect to their corresponding exact implication
bases. Using a small example, we also provide qualitative insight that
implications from probably approximately correct bases can still represent

Violence against children perpetrated by peers: A cross-sectional school-based survey in Uganda
Violence against children by peers is a global public health problem. We aimed to assess factors associated with peer violence victimization among primary school children in Uganda. We conducted multilevel multivariable logistic regression analyses of cross-sectional data from 3706 primary students in 42 Ugandan primary schools. Among primary school students, 29% and 34% had ever experienced physical and emotional violence perpetrated by their peers, respectively. Factors strongly associated with both physical and emotional violence were similar and overlapping, and included exposure to interparental violence, having an attitude supportive of violence against children from school staff, not living with biological parents, working for payment, and higher SDQ score. However, we found that younger age, sharing sleeping area with an adult and achieving a higher educational performance score, were specifically associated with physical violence. On the other hand, being female, walking to school, reporting disability and eating one meal on the previous day, were particularly associated with emotional violence. Interventions to reduce peer violence should focus on family contexts, school environments and those with poor socio-economic status may need extra support

Reliability of Three Landmarking Methods for Dual Inclinometry Measurements of Lumbar Flexion and Extension
Background
To examine the intra and inter-rater reliability of lumbar flexion and extension measurements attained using three landmarking methods for dual inclinometry.
Methods
This was a repeated measures reliability study. Convenience sampling was used to obtain forty volunteer subjects. Two assessors measured a series of lumbar flexion and extension movements using the J-Tech™ dual inclinometer. Three different landmarking methods were used: 1) straight palpation of PSIS and L1, 2) palpation of PSIS and the site of the nearest 5 cm interval point closest to L1 and 3) location of PSIS and 15 cm cephalad. Upon landmarking, adhesive tape was used to mark landmarks and the inclinometer was placed on sites for three trials of flexion and extension. Tape was removed and landmarks were relocated by the same assessor (intra-rater) for an additional three trials; and this process was repeated by a second assessor (inter-rater). Reliability was determined using intra-class correlation coefficients.
Results
Reliability within a set of three repetitions was very high (ICCs \u3e 0.90); intra-rater reliability after relocating landmarks was high (ICCs \u3e 0.80); reliability between therapists was moderate to high (0.60 \u3e ICCs \u3c 0.76). Assessment of flexion and extension movements by straight palpation of bony landmarks as in the Straight palpation of PSIS and L1 method (ICC: Flexion 0.60; Extension 0.74) was found to be marginally less reliable than the other two landmarking measurement strategies (ICC: Flexion 0.66; Extension 0.76).
Conclusion
All three methods of land marking are reliable. We recommend the use of the PSIS to 15 cm cephalad method as used in the modified-modified Schobers test as it is the simplest to perform and aligns with current clinical practice
