Thermal fluctuations of free standing graphene
We use non-perturbative renormalization group techniques to calculate the
momentum dependence of thermal fluctuations of graphene, based on a
self-consistent calculation of the momentum dependent elastic constants of a
tethered membrane. We find a sharp crossover from the perturbative to the
anomalous regime, in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo results for graphene,
and give an accurate value for the crossover scale. Our work strongly supports
the notion that graphene is well described as a tethered membrane. Ripples
emerge naturally from our analysis.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; discussion of the Ginzburg scale of the
out-of-plane fluctuations and its relation to ripples was extended. Final

Spin-wave interactions in quantum antiferromagnets
We study spin-wave interactions in quantum antiferromagnets by expressing the
usual magnon annihilation and creation operators in terms of Hermitian field
operators representing transverse staggered and ferromagnetic spin
fluctuations. In this parameterization, which was anticipated by Anderson in
1952, the two-body interaction vertex between staggered spin fluctuations
vanishes at long wavelengths. We derive a new effective action for the
staggered fluctuations only by tracing out the ferromagnetic fluctuations. To
one loop order, the renormalization group flow agrees with the
nonlinear--model approach.Comment: 7 pages, no figures; new references added; extended discussion on

Self-energy and critical temperature of weakly interacting bosons
Using the exact renormalization group we calculate the momentum-dependent
self-energy Sigma (k) at zero frequency of weakly interacting bosons at the
critical temperature T_c of Bose-Einstein condensation in dimensions 3 <= D <
4. We obtain the complete crossover function interpolating between the critical
regime k << k_c, where Sigma (k) propto k^{2 - eta}, and the short-wavelength
regime k >> k_c, where Sigma (k) propto k^{2 (D-3)} in D> 3 and Sigma (k)
\propto ln (k/k_c) in D=3. Our approach yields the crossover scale k_c on the
same footing with a reasonable estimate for the critical exponent eta in D=3.
From our Sigma (k) we find for the interaction-induced shift of T_c in three
dimensions Delta T_c / T_c approx 1.23 a n^{1/3}, where a is the s-wave
scattering length and n is the density.Comment: 4 pages,1 figur
Signature of stripe pinning in optical conductivity
The response of charge stripes to an external electric field applied
perpendicular to the stripe direction is studied within a diagrammatic approach
for both weak and strong pinning by random impurities. The sound-like mode of
the stripes described as elastic strings moves to finite frequency due to
impurity pinning. By calculating the optical conductivity we determine this
characteristic energy scale for both a single stripe and an array of
interacting stripes. The results explain the anomalous far-infrared peak
observed recently in optical-conductivity measurements on cuprates.Comment: Revised version, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Energy spectra of the ocean's internal wave field: theory and observations
The high-frequency limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum of internal waves
in the ocean and the observed deviations from it are shown to form a pattern
consistent with the predictions of wave turbulence theory. In particular, the
high frequency limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum constitutes an {\it
exact} steady state solution of the corresponding kinetic equation.Comment: 4 pages, one color figur
Approximative treatment of 5f-systems with partial localization due to intra-atomic correlations
Increasing experimental and theoretical evidence points towards a dual nature
of the 5 electrons in actinide-based strongly correlated metallic compounds,
with some 5 electrons being localized and others delocalized. In a recent
paper (PRB xxx, 2004), we suggested the interplay of intra-atomic correlations
as described by Hund's rules and a weakly anisotropic hopping (hybridization)
as a possible mechanism. The purpose of the present work is to provide a first
step towards a microscopic description of partial localization in solids by
analyzing how well various approximation schemes perform when applied to small
clusters. It is found that many aspects of partial localization are described
appropriately both by a variational wavefunction of Gutzwiller type and by a
treatment which keeps only those interactions which are present in LDA+U
calculations. In contrast, the energies and phase diagram calculated within the
Hartree Fock approximation show little resemblence with the exact results.
Enhancement of hopping anisotropy by Hund's rule correlations are found in all
approximations.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
On the Conductivity of a Magnetoactive Turbulent Plasma
The problem of determining the effective conductivity tensor of a
magnetoactive turbulent plasma is considered in the approximation of isolated
particles. Additional gyrotropicterms are shown to appear in the conductivity
tensor in the presence of mean, nonzero magnetic helicity. The dispersion of
propagating electro- magnetic waves changes, additional modes and additional
rotation of the polarization plane appear, and the waves can be amplified. The
properties acquired by plasma with helicity are similar those observed in
chiral and bianisotropic electrodynamic media.Comment: 15 page
Statistical Description of Acoustic Turbulence
We develop expressions for the nonlinear wave damping and frequency
correction of a field of random, spatially homogeneous, acoustic waves. The

The gas of elastic quantum strings in 2+1 dimensions: finite temperatures
The finite temperature physics of the gas of elastic quantum strings as
introduced in J. Zaanen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 753 is investigated. This model
is inspired on the stripes in the high Tc superconductors. We analyze in detail
how the kinetic interactions of the zero temperature quantum problem crossover
into the entropic interactions of the high temperature limit.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
