On Thermalization in de Sitter Space

We discuss thermalization in de Sitter space and argue, from two different points of view, that the typical time needed for thermalization is of order R3/lpl2R^{3}/l_{pl}^{2}, where RR is the radius of the de Sitter space in question. This time scale gives plenty of room for non-thermal deviations to survive during long periods of inflation. We also speculate in more general terms on the meaning of the time scale for finite quantum systems inside isolated boxes, and comment on the relation to the Poincar\'{e} recurrence time.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, latex, references added. Boson--fermion bound states in two dimensional QCD

    Get PDF
We derive the boson--fermion bound state equation in a two dimensional gauge theory in the large--\nc limit. We analyze the properties of this equation and in particular, find that the mass trajectory is linear with respect to the bound state level for the higher mass states.Comment: 5pp, 2 figs (as a separate file), TIT/HEP-23

Topological Excitations in Compact Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory

We construct a lattice model of compact (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Chern- Simons theory, starting from its formulation in terms of gauge invariant quantities proposed by Deser and Jackiw. We thereby identify the topological excitations and their interactions. These consist of monopolo- antimonopole pairs bounded by strings carrying both magnetic flux and electric charge. The electric charge renders the Dirac strings observable and endows them with a finite energy per unit length, which results in a linearly confining string tension. Additionally, the strings interact via an imaginary, topological term measuring the (self-) linking number of closed strings.Comment: harvmac, CERN-TH. 6906/93, DFUPG 80/9

Holographic bounds on the UV cutoff scale in inflationary cosmology

We discuss how holographic bounds can be applied to the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton. In general the holographic principle will lead to a bound on the UV cutoff scale of the effective theory of inflation, but it will depend on the coarse-graining prescription involved in calculating the entropy. We propose that the entanglement entropy is a natural measure of the entropy of the quantum perturbations, and show which kind of bound on the cutoff it leads to. Such bounds are related to whether the effects of new physics will show up in the CMB.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures;(V3):Comments and references adde

    Tube Model for Light-Front QCD

    Get PDF
We propose the tube model as a first step in solving the bound state problem in light-front QCD. In this approach we neglect transverse variations of the fields, producing a model with 1+1 dimensional dynamics. We then solve the two, three, and four particle sectors of the model for the case of pure glue SU(3). We study convergence to the continuum limit and various properties of the spectrum.Comment: 29 page

Monopole Percolation in the Compact Abelian Higgs Model

We have studied the monopole-percolation phenomenon in the four dimensional Abelian theory that contains compact U(1) gauge fields coupled to unitary norm Higgs fields. We have determined the location of the percolation transition line in the plane (βg,βH)(\beta_g, \beta_H). This line overlaps the confined-Coulomb and the confined-Higgs phase transition lines, originated by a monopole-condensation mechanism, but continues away from the end-point where this phase transition line stops. In addition, we have determined the critical exponents of the monopole percolation transition away from the phase transition lines. We have performed the finite size scaling in terms of the monopole density instead of the coupling, because the density seems to be the natural parameter when dealing with percolation phenomena.Comment: 13 pages. Grand Unification with Three Generations in Free Fermionic String Models

    Get PDF
We examine the problem of constructing three generation free fermionic string models with grand unified gauge groups. We attempt the construction of GĂ—GG\times G models, where GG is a grand unified group realized at level 1. This structure allows those Higgs representations to appear which are necessary to break the symmetry down to the standard model gauge group. For G=SO(10)G=SO(10), we find only models with an even number of generations. However, for G=SU(5)G=SU(5) we find a number of 3 generation models.Comment: 22 pages, latex. Production of neutral scalar Higgs bosons at eÎłe\gamma colliders

We study the production of neutral scalar (CP even) Higgs bosons in the process eγ→ehe\gamma\to e h by including supersymmetric corrections to the dominant tt-channel photon exchange amplitude. In addition to the standard model W±W^{\pm} and fermion loops, there are substantial contributions from chargino loops. For some cases, these contributions can exceed those of the WW's and ordinary fermions. The cross sections in this channel are generally one or two orders of magnitude larger than those in the related channel eeˉ→γhe\bar{e}\to\gamma h.Comment: 12 pages RevTeX, 5 postscript figures included, uses epsf.st

QCD Corrections to SUSY Higgs Production: The Role of Squark Loops

    Get PDF
We calculate the two-loop QCD corrections to the production of the neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons via the gluon fusion mechanism at hadron colliders, including the contributions of squark loops. To a good approximation, these additional contributions lead to the same QCD corrections as in the case where only top and bottom quark loops are taken into account. The QCD corrections are large and increase the Higgs production cross sections significantly.Comment: 5 pages, latex, 2 figure
