Exploring Preservice Teacher Attitudes toward Black Students
The majority of the preservice teacher population is young, White, and female; however, the urban school system student population continues to become increasingly diverse, including an increasing population of underserved Black students in urban schools. The racial differences between the preservice teacher population and the urban student population complicates the challenges faced in educating Black students effectively. Teachers and students often encounter misunderstandings, and thus, utilize incompatible styles of classroom management and instruction, often resulting in Black students experiencing difficulties with learning. Many of these complications derive from the profound presence of race, racial difference, and racial inequality throughout U.S. history. The purpose of this research was to explore the racial ideas, experiences, and attitudes of preservice teachers, who self-identify as White, toward future Black students at a large, southeastern, Research I university through a qualitative interview process. More specifically, this study examined preservice teachers’ cultural sensitivity towards Black students. This study also observed preservice teachers’ ability to discuss these issues. Using information from a 10-question qualitative interview of three (3) research participants, this thesis explored the following questions: Research question one (RQ1): How do preservice teachers define race and racism?, Research question two (RQ2): What factors contribute to preservice teachers’ racial perspectives?, and Research question three (RQ3): What are preservice teachers’ attitudes towards students who are racially different from themselves, specifically Black students
Generating Non-Linear Interpolants by Semidefinite Programming
Interpolation-based techniques have been widely and successfully applied in
the verification of hardware and software, e.g., in bounded-model check- ing,
CEGAR, SMT, etc., whose hardest part is how to synthesize interpolants. Various
work for discovering interpolants for propositional logic, quantifier-free
fragments of first-order theories and their combinations have been proposed.
However, little work focuses on discovering polynomial interpolants in the
literature. In this paper, we provide an approach for constructing non-linear
interpolants based on semidefinite programming, and show how to apply such
results to the verification of programs by examples.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Differential Forms on Log Canonical Spaces
The present paper is concerned with differential forms on log canonical
varieties. It is shown that any p-form defined on the smooth locus of a variety
with canonical or klt singularities extends regularly to any resolution of
singularities. In fact, a much more general theorem for log canonical pairs is
established. The proof relies on vanishing theorems for log canonical varieties
and on methods of the minimal model program. In addition, a theory of
differential forms on dlt pairs is developed. It is shown that many of the
fundamental theorems and techniques known for sheaves of logarithmic
differentials on smooth varieties also hold in the dlt setting.
Immediate applications include the existence of a pull-back map for reflexive
differentials, generalisations of Bogomolov-Sommese type vanishing results, and

Causes of death and comorbidities in hospitalized patients with COVID-19
Infection by the new corona virus strain SARS-CoV-2 and its related syndrome COVID-19 has been associated with more than two million deaths worldwide. Patients of higher age and with preexisting chronic health conditions are at an increased risk of fatal disease outcome. However, detailed information on causes of death and the contribution of pre-existing health conditions to death yet is missing, which can be reliably established by autopsy only. We performed full body autopsies on 26 patients that had died after SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 at the Charite University Hospital Berlin, Germany, or at associated teaching hospitals. We systematically evaluated causes of death and pre-existing health conditions. Additionally, clinical records and death certificates were evaluated. We report findings on causes of death and comorbidities of 26 decedents that had clinically presented with severe COVID-19. We found that septic shock and multi organ failure was the most common immediate cause of death, often due to suppurative pulmonary infection. Respiratory failure due to diffuse alveolar damage presented as immediate cause of death in fewer cases. Several comorbidities, such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and obesity were present in the vast majority of patients. Our findings reveal that causes of death were directly related to COVID-19 in the majority of decedents, while they appear not to be an immediate result of preexisting health conditions and comorbidities. We therefore suggest that the majority of patients had died of COVID-19 with only contributory implications of preexisting health conditions to the mechanism of death

The next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) is
one of the most favored supersymmetric models. After an introduction to the
model, the Higgs sector and the neutralino sector are discussed in detail.
Theoretical, experimental, and cosmological constraints are studied.
Eventually, the Higgs potential is investigated in the approach of bilinear
functions. Emphasis is placed on aspects which are different from the minimal

The Degree and regularity of vanishing ideals of algebraic toric sets over finite fields
Let X* be a subset of an affine space A^s, over a finite field K, which is
parameterized by the edges of a clutter. Let X and Y be the images of X* under
the maps x --> [x] and x --> [(x,1)] respectively, where [x] and [(x,1)] are
points in the projective spaces P^{s-1} and P^s respectively. For certain
clutters and for connected graphs, we were able to relate the algebraic
invariants and properties of the vanishing ideals I(X) and I(Y). In a number of
interesting cases, we compute its degree and regularity. For Hamiltonian
bipartite graphs, we show the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. We give
optimal bounds for the regularity when the graph is bipartite. It is shown that
X* is an affine torus if and only if I(Y) is a complete intersection. We
present some applications to coding theory and show some bounds for the minimum
distance of parameterized linear codes for connected bipartite graphs
Does Diabetes Accelerate the Progression of Aortic Stenosis through Enhanced Inflammatory Response within Aortic valves?
Diabetes predisposes to aortic stenosis (AS). We aimed to investigate if diabetes affects the expression of selected coagulation proteins and inflammatory markers in AS valves. Twenty patients with severe AS and concomitant type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and 40 well-matched patients without DM scheduled for valve replacement were recruited. Valvular tissue factor (TF), TF pathway inhibitor (TFPI), prothrombin, C-reactive protein (CRP) expression were evaluated by immunostaining and TF, prothrombin, and CRP transcripts were analyzed by real-time PCR. DM patients had elevated plasma CRP (9.2 [0.74–51.9] mg/l vs. 4.7 [0.59–23.14] mg/l, p = 0.009) and TF (293.06 [192.32–386.12] pg/ml vs. 140 [104.17–177.76] pg/ml, p = 0.003) compared to non-DM patients. In DM group, TF−, TFPI−, and prothrombin expression within valves was not related to demographics, body mass index, and concomitant diseases, whereas increased expression related to DM was found for CRP on both protein (2.87 [0.5–9]% vs. 0.94 [0–4]%, p = 0.01) and transcript levels (1.3 ± 0.61 vs. 0.22 ± 0.43, p = 0.009). CRP-positive areas were positively correlated with mRNA TF (r = 0.84, p = 0.036). Diabetes mellitus is associated with enhanced inflammation within AS valves, measured by CRP expression, which may contribute to faster AS progression
Exploring the transdisciplinary trajectory of suggestibility
Traditionally considered a deficiency in will power and rationality, suggestibility has proven a troublesome concept for psychology. It was forgotten, rediscovered, denounced, undermined experimentation and recently became the ambiguous issue at the centre of concern about child witness' credibility in sexual abuse cases. This paper traces the history of suggestibility to show how it raises the 'paradox of the psychosocial'. Drawing on the work of Deleuze and Stengers, and on interviews with legal practitioners, this paper demonstrates how suggestibility carries this paradox into theory, research and legal practice. It thereby opens up a transdisciplinary perspective, allowing for questions of power and knowledge to be asked as performative questions. In the spirit of a process-centred ontology for psychology, I argue that suggestibility constitutes a 'rhythm of problematization', a folding, giving a subversive insight into dynamics of subjectification and application, and offering new perspectives towards issues of children's credibility and protection
Intranasal Delivery of E-Selectin Reduces Atherosclerosis in ApoE−/− Mice
Mucosal tolerance to E-selectin prevents stroke and protects against ischemic brain damage in experimental models of stroke studying healthy animals or spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats. A reduction in inflammation and neural damage was associated with immunomodulatory or “tolerogenic” responses to E-selectin. The purpose of the current study on ApoE deficient mice is to assess the capacity of this stroke prevention innovation to influence atherosclerosis, a major underlying cause for ischemic strokes; human E-selectin is being translated as a potential clinical prevention strategy for secondary stroke. Female ApoE−/− mice received intranasal delivery of E-selectin prior to (pre-tolerization) or simultaneously with initiation of a high-fat diet. After 7 weeks on the high-fat diet, lipid lesions in the aorta, serum triglycerides, and total cholesterol were assessed as markers of atherosclerosis development. We also assessed E-selectin-specific antibodies and cytokine responses, in addition to inflammatory responses that included macrophage infiltration of the aorta and altered gene expression profiles of aortic mRNA. Intranasal delivery of E-selectin prior to initiation of high-fat chow decreased atherosclerosis, serum total cholesterol, and expression of the leucocyte chemoattractant CCL21 that is typically upregulated in atherosclerotic lesions of ApoE−/− mice. This response was associated with the induction of E-selectin specific cells producing the immunomodulatory cytokine IL-10 and immunosuppressive antibody isotypes. Intranasal administration of E-selectin generates E-selectin specific immune responses that are immunosuppressive in nature and can ameliorate atherosclerosis, a major risk factor for ischemic stroke. These results provide additional preclinical support for the potential of induction of mucosal tolerance to E-selectin to prevent stroke
