    Framing the migrant subject : Shane Maloney\u27s Stiff

    How do you get to be the kind of victor who can claim to be the vanquished also ? Jamaica Kincaid I wish to problematise the representations of non-Anglo migrants in the crime thriller Stiff, written by Shane Maloney, regular humour columnist for the magazine Arena. The author structures the meanings conferred to non-Anglo migrants and Australianness by using irony and the crime thriller genre itself. The technique of irony which characterises the novel is a mechanism which enables the author to get away with untenable positions by \u27progressive\u27 standards. This ironic tone reverses relations of power casting the narrator Murray Whelan in the role of victim: the failed husband, the precarious father, the sexually inept man and the Anglo male bureaucrat/activist who has to deal with \u27foreigners\u27. Whelan, electorate officer for the ALP is the socially engaged man simultaneously assailed by feminism and multiculturalism. He is at once the victor and the vanquished

    L'EVP est un écosystème où se croisent la valeur esthétique et l'intérêt fonctionnel du végétal ; c'est également un espace d'interaction privilégié entre l'homme et la biodiversité. Cette étude cherche à lancer le débat sur l'effet des activités humaines sur la dynamique végétale dans les EVP, d'une part. Elle a tenté d'explorer la relation entre les pratiques, les représentations et l'image du sauvage, incarné par la diversité biologique urbaine, d'autre part. L'étude de la richesse, de la diversité et de la similarité de la flore urbaine a confirmé non seulement l'effet perturbateur des pratiques sur la composition floristique des pelouses urbaines, mais elle a également corroboré l'idée de l'existence d'un gradient de perturbation, de part et d'autre des chemins de fréquentation dans les pelouses. Par ailleurs l'analyse des pratiques et des représentations des usagers, qui relient l'individu au végétal, a contribué à mettre en lumière la question des usages des EVP en relation au gradient urbain. Elle a aussi confirmé l'importance attribuée par les usagers à la présence de l'espace sauvage dans les EVP (68 % des interrogés le préfèrent à l'espace jardiné). La prise en compte des interactions entre usagers et dynamiques floristiques ne devrait plus être ignorée 14/17 dans la conception et surtout dans la gestion des EVP. Ces interactions constituent un champ de recherche qui attend toujours la mobilisation d'une communauté scientifique (écologues, géographes, sociologues, urbanistes, etc.) dotée d'une vision pluridisciplinaire (Clergeau, 2007 ; Bagouet et Clergeau, 2008)

Il capitolo riguardante l'alta quota appenninica è il più corposo e propone il nuovo syntaxon Leontopodio-Elynion a livello di alleanza. La grande novità sta nel fatto che questa alleanza è da considerarsi anfi-Adriatica e unsice Appennino e balcani, differenziandosi dall'alleanza già definita da altri per le Alpi. i Pirenei e i Carpazi.During preparation of the European checklist of vegetation units (EuroVegChecklist), it became clear that some earlier described syntaxa need to be typified in order to stabilize nomenclature and some new syntaxa need to be described. Here we propose nomenclature adjustments and formal description of four new alliances for the Arctic, alpine and oro-Mediterranean vegetation of Europe, Greenland and Anatolia. First, we typify the class Juncetea trifidi. Second, we describe four new alliances, such as the Puccinellion nuttallianae (Low-Arctic salt steppes of Greenland; class Saxifrago tricuspidatae-Calamagrostietea purpurascentis), Dryado octopetalae- Caricion arctisibiricae (Arctic tundra vegetation of north-eastern European Russia; class Carici rupestris-Kobresietea bellardii), Leontopodio nivalis-Elynion myosuroidis (southern European alpine tundra vegetation; class Carici rupestris-Kobresietea bellardii) and Lagotido uralensis-Caricion ensifoliae (alpine tundra vegetation of the Southern Ural Mountains; class Juncetea trifidi). Two new associations are described within the first two of these alliances. Finally, we present an interpretation of the alliance Muscario-Scillion nivalis

    Formation of misfolded aggregates is an essential part of what proteins can do. The process of protein aggregation is central to many human diseases and any aggregating event needs to be prevented within a cell and in protein design. In order to aggregate, a protein needs to unfold its native state, at least partially. The conformational state that is prone to aggregate is difficult to study, due to its aggregating potential and heterogeneous nature. Here, we use a systematic approach of limited proteolysis, in combination with electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry, to investigate the regions that are most flexible and solvent-exposed within the native, ligand-bound and amyloidogenic states of muscle acylphosphatase (AcP), a protein previously shown to form amyloid fibrils in the presence of trifluoroethanol. Seven proteases with different degrees of specificity have been used for this purpose. Following exposure to the aggregating conditions, a number of sites along the sequence of AcP become susceptible to proteolytic digestion. The pattern of proteolytic cleavages obtained under these conditions is considerably different from that of the native and ligand-bound conformations and includes a portion within the N-terminal tail of the protein (residues 6-7), the region of the sequence 18-23 and the position 94 near the C terminus. There is a significant overlap between the regions of the sequence found to be solvent-exposed from the present study and those previously identified to be critical in the rate-determining steps of aggregation from protein engineering approaches. This indicates that a considerable degree of solvent exposure is a feature of the portions of a protein that initiate the process of aggregation

    Morphology, geometric morphometrics, and taxonomy in relict deciduous oaks woods in northern Italy

    Abstract: The Euganean Hills are a well-known refugee site for thermophilous woody flora in northern Italy. Among the species recorded here, there is Quercus dalechampii. The Euganean Hills are the only northern Italy site where the occurrence of this oak species is considered. The aim of this paper was to verify the presence of Q. dalechampii in the study area and to select possible diagnostic morphological traits that are usable to distinguish it from Q. petraea and Q. pubescens. Forest stands dominated by Q. petraea, Q. pubescens, and the presumed Q. dalechampii were sampled using the phytosociological approach to highlight their ecological features. Leaf and fruit material from 104 oak individuals was analysed from a macro-morphological and micro-morphological point of view. Leaf shape was also analysed using the geometric morphometric approach. All multivariate analysis procedures applied on the matrices of leaf and fruit traits highlighted two main clusters of morphological diversity. One was restricted to Q. pubescens individuals, and the other one was a mix of Q. petraea and presumed Q. dalechampii individuals. According to the twig and leaf trichome traits, all presumed Q. dalechampii individuals were classified as belonging to the Q. petraea collective group. Morphological differences between Q. petraea and presumed Q. dalechampii were considered not significant. In conclusion, the occurrence of a third oak species, in addition to Q. petraea and Q. pubescens, was not confirmed for the study area by the results of this paper.     Ionizing Radiation-Induced Apoptosis and DNA Repair in Murine Erythroleukemia Cells

    A morphological study of DNA repair and apoptotic patterns in relationship with cell cycle events was performed on murine erythroleukemia cells. The presence and distribution of DNA replicon sites were evaluated through the BrdU-anti BrdU immunofluorescence and immunogold techniques in light and electron microscopy. Different patterns of labelling and percentages of BrdU positive cells were observed depending on irradiation dose (up to 60 Gy) and time in post-irradiation culture (up to 24 hours). An enlargement of the S phase of the cell cycle was evidenced 18 hours post-irradiation as determined by flow cytometry analysis. The high resolution approach showed that, in spite of several morphological alterations, BrdU labelling was present even in cells displaying early and late apoptotic features

    Remarkable effect of [Li(G4)]TFSI solvate ionic liquid (SIL) on the regio- And stereoselective ring opening of α-gluco carbasugar 1,2-epoxides

    Carba analogues of biologically relevant natural carbohydrates are promising structures for the development of future drugs endowed with enhanced hydrolytic stability. An open synthetic challenge in this field is the optimization of new methodologies for the stereo- and regioselective opening of α-gluco carbasugar 1,2-epoxides that allow for the preparation of pseudo mono- and disaccharides of great interest. Therefore, we investigated the effect of Lewis acids and solvate ionic liquids (SILs) on the epoxide ring opening of a model substrate. Of particular interest was the complete stereo- and regioselectivity, albeit limited to simple nucleophiles, toward the desired C(1) isomer that was observed using LiClO4. The results obtained with SILs were also remarkable. In particular, Li[NTf2]/tetraglyme ([Li(G4)]TFSI) was able to function as a Lewis acid and to direct the attack of the nucleophile preferentially at the pseudo anomeric position, even with a more complex and synthetically interesting nucleophile. The regioselectivity observed for LiClO4 and [Li(G4)]TFSI was tentatively ascribed to the formation of a bidentate chelating system, which changed the conformational equilibrium and ultimately permitted a trans-diaxial attack on C(1). To the best of our knowledge, we report here the first case in which SILs were successfully employed in a ring-opening process of epoxides

    In this contribution, new chromosome data regarding two taxonomically critical genera of the Italian fora, namely Plantago and Sesleria, are presented. All the specimens analysed in this paper were collected in the Italian territory and include three chromosome counts for Plantago (P. albicans, P. crassifolia, and P. subulata) and two counts for Sesleria (S. caerulea and S. nitida)

    A revised phytosociological nomenclature for the Italian Quercus cerris woods

    This paper aims to revise the phytosociological nomenclature of the Quercus cerris woods occurring in Italy with particular attention to associations, subassociations, and suballiances. The syntaxa included in this revision were selected based on a physiognomical criterion, i.e., woods with dominance or codominance of Quercus cerris. The nomenclatural revision complied with the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. Correct names and Authors' citations were considered for all the syntaxa analyzed (121), and, in most cases, other information about nomenclatural types, localities, synonyms, classification, and other notes was reported. As regards the alliance level, the correct application of the name Melittio albidae-Quercion frainetto ―whose original diagnosis and type-association occur in Italy― was discussed. In all, 31 syntaxon names were validated or described: two suballiances (Campanulo medii-Ostryenion carpinifoliae and Pulmonario apenninae-Carpinenion betuli), nine associations and 20 subassociations.
