Asymptotic symmetry and conservation laws in 2d Poincar\'e gauge theory of gravity

The structure of the asymptotic symmetry in the Poincar\'e gauge theory of gravity in 2d is clarified by using the Hamiltonian formalism. The improved form of the generator of the asymptotic symmetry is found for very general asymptotic behaviour of phase space variables, and the related conserved quantities are explicitly constructed.Comment: 22 pages, Plain Te

Monopoles near the Planck Scale and Unification

Considering our (3+1)-dimensional space-time as, in some way, discrete or l attice with a parameter a=λPa=\lambda_P, where λP\lambda_P is the Planck length, we have investigated the additional contributions of lattice artifact monopoles to beta-functions of the renormalisation group equations for the running fine structure constants αi(μ)\alpha_i(\mu) (i=1,2,3 correspond to the U(1), SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups of the Standard Model) in the Family Replicated Gauge Group Model (FRGGM) which is an extension of the Standard Model at high energies. It was shown that monopoles have NfamN_{fam} times smaller magnetic charge in FRGGM than in SM (NfamN_{fam} is the number of families in FRGGM). We have estimated al so the enlargement of a number of fermions in FRGGM leading to the suppression of the asymptotic freedom in the non-Abelian theory. We have shown that, in contrast to the case of AntiGUT when the FRGGM undergoes the breakdown at μ=μG1018\mu=\mu_G\sim 10^{18} GeV, we have the possibility of unification if the FRGGM-breakdown occurs at μG1014\mu_G\sim 10^{14} GeV. By numerical calculations we obtained an example of the unification of all gauge interactions (including gravity) at the scale μGUT1018.4\mu_{GUT}\approx 10^{18.4} GeV. We discussed the possibility of [SU(5)]3[SU(5)]^3 or [SO(10)]3[SO(10)]^3 (SUSY or not SUSY) unifications.Comment: 49 pages, 7 figure

Phase transition in the Higgs model of scalar dyons

In the present paper we investigate the phase transition "Coulomb--confinement" in the Higgs model of abelian scalar dyons -- particles having both, electric ee and magnetic gg, charges. It is shown that by dual symmetry this theory is equivalent to scalar fields with the effective squared electric charge e^{*2}=e^2+g^2. But the Dirac relation distinguishes the electric and magnetic charges of dyons. The following phase transition couplings are obtained in the one--loop approximation: \alpha_{crit}=e^2_{crit}/4\pi\approx 0.19, \tilde\alpha_{crit}=g^2_{crit}/4\pi\approx 1.29 and \alpha^*_{crit}\approx 1.48.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure

Magnetic phase transition in V2O3 nanocrystals

V2O3 nanocrystals can be synthesized through hydrothermal reduction of VO(OH)2 using hydrazine as a reducing agent. Addition of different ligands to the reaction produces nanoparticles, nanorods and nanoplatelets of different sizes. Small nanoparticles synthesized in this manner show suppression of the magnetic phase transition to lower temperatures. Using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, it is determined that the volume fraction of the high-temperature phase, characterized by a rhombohedral structure and paramagnetism, gradually declines with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the sharp transition observed in bulk V2O3.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

Phase transition in gauge theories, monopoles and the Multiple Point Principle

This review is devoted to the Multiple Point Principle (MPP), according to which several vacuum states with the same energy density exist in Nature. The MPP is implemented to the Standard Model (SM), Family replicated gauge group model (FRGGM) and phase transitions in gauge theories with/without monopoles. Lattice gauge theories are reviewed. The lattice results for critical coupling constants are compared with those of the Higgs Monopole Model (HMM), in which the lattice artifact monopoles are replaced by the point-like Higgs scalar particles with a magnetic charge. Considering our (3+1)-dimensional space-time as discrete, for example, as a lattice with a parameter a=\lambda_P, equal to the Planck length, we have investigated the additional contributions of monopoles to beta-functions of renormalization group equations in the FRGGM extended beyond the SM at high (the Planck scale) energies. We have reviewed that, in contrast to the Anti-grand unified theory (AGUT), there exists a possibility of unification of all gauge interactions (including gravity) near the Planck scale due to monopoles. The unifications [SU(5)]^3 and [SO(10)]^3 at the GUT-scale \sim 10^{18} GeV are briefly discussed.Comment: 100 pages, 25 figures, typos correcte

Hamiltonian analysis of BHT massive gravity

We study the Hamiltonian structure of the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity with a cosmological constant. In the space of coupling constants (Λ0,m2)(\Lambda_0,m^2), our canonical analysis reveals the special role of the condition Λ0/m21\Lambda_0/m^2\neq-1. In this sector, the dimension of the physical phase space is found to be N=4N^*=4, which corresponds to two Lagrangian degree of freedom. When applied to the AdS asymptotic region, the canonical approach yields the conserved charges of the BTZ black hole, and central charges of the asymptotic symmetry algebra.Comment: LATEX, 21 pages; v2: minor correction

Classical central extension for asymptotic symmetries at null infinity in three spacetime dimensions

The symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in three dimensions is the semi-direct sum of the infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on the circle with an abelian ideal of supertranslations. The associated charge algebra is shown to admit a non trivial classical central extension of Virasoro type closely related to that of the anti-de Sitter case.Comment: 4 sign mistakes due to a change of conventions are corrected in section 2, none of the conclusions are affected, takes precedence over published version, including corrigendu

Extra gauge symmetries in BHT gravity

We study the canonical structure of the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend massive gravity, linearized around a maximally symmetric background. At the critical point in the space of parameters, defined by Λ0/m2=1\Lambda_0/m^2=-1, we discover an extra gauge symmetry, which reflects the existence of the partially massless mode. The number of the Lagrangian degrees of freedom is found to be 1. We show that the canonical structure of the theory at the critical point is unstable under linearization.Comment: LATEX, 12 page

Autonomous electrical current monitoring system for aircraft

    Get PDF
Aircraft monitoring systems offer enhanced safety, reliability, reduced maintenance cost and improved overall flight efficiency. Advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSN) are enabling unprecedented data acquisition functionalities, but their applicability is restricted by power limitations, as batteries require replacement or recharging and wired power adds weight and detracts from the benefits of wireless technology. In this paper, an energy autonomous WSN is presented for monitoring the structural current in aircraft structures. A hybrid inductive/hall sensing concept is introduced demonstrating 0.5 A resolution, < 2% accuracy and frequency independence, for a 5 A – 100 A RMS, DC-800 Hz current and frequency range, with 35 mW active power consumption. An inductive energy harvesting power supply with magnetic flux funnelling, reactance compensation and supercapacitor storage is demonstrated to provide 0.16 mW of continuous power from the 65 μT RMS field of a 20 A RMS, 360 Hz structural current. A low-power sensor node platform with a custom multi-mode duty cycling network protocol is developed, offering cold starting network association and data acquisition/transmission functionality at 50 μW and 70 μW average power respectively. WSN level operation for 1 minute for every 8 minutes of energy harvesting is demonstrated. The proposed system offers a unique energy autonomous WSN platform for aircraft monitoring
