Should we teach linear algebra through geometry?

AbstractCan geometry help students learn linear algebra? I study this question and demonstrate that there is no obvious clear answer: geometry can be an obstacle to learning linear algebra; or it can be helpful. Geometry is helpful only under certain conditions and with a specific use of drawings. These special requirements for using geometry are apparently not much recognized in our teaching of linear algebra courses, at least in France, where my educational studies have taken place

A genome-wide search for genes involved in type 2 diabetes in a recently genetically isolated population from the Netherlands

Multiple genes, interacting with the environment, contribute to the susceptibility to type 2 diabetes. We performed a genome-wide search to localize type 2 diabetes susceptibility genes in a recently genetically isolated population in the Netherlands. We identified 79 nuclear families with type 2 diabetes who were related within 13 generations and performed a 770-marker genome-wide scan search for shared founder alleles. Twenty-six markers yielded a logarithm of odds (LOD) score >0.59 (nominal P 1.17 (nominal P < 0.01). The strongest evidence for a type 2 diabetes locus was at marker D18S63 on chromosome 18p (LOD 2.3, P = 0.0006). This region was investigated further using additional markers. For one of these markers (D18S1105), we found a significant association with type 2 diabetes (odds ratio 6.7 [95% CI 1.5-30.7], P = 0.005 for the 97-bp allele, assuming a dominant model), which increased when limiting the analysis to patients with high BMI (12.25 [2.1-71], P = 0.003). A locus on chromosome 18p in patients with high BMI was suggested earlier by Parker et al. Our study is the first to confirm this locus

Diode-pumped ultrafast Yb:KGW laser with 56 fs pulses and multi-100 kW peak power based on SESAM and Kerr-lens mode locking

A high-power sub-60 fs mode-locked diode-pumped Yb:KGW laser based on hybrid action of an InGaAs quantum-dot saturable absorber mirror and Kerr-lens mode locking was demonstrated. The laser delivered 56 fs pulses with 1.95 W of average power corresponding to 450 kW of peak power. The width of the generated laser spectrum was 20.5 nm, which was near the gain bandwidth limit of the Yb:KGW crystal. To the best of our knowledge, these are the shortest pulses generated from the monoclinic double tungstate crystals (and Yb:KGW laser crystal in particular) and the most powerful in the sub-60 fs regime. At the same time, they are also the shortest pulses produced to date with the help of a quantum-dot-based saturable absorber. High-power operation with a pulse duration of 90 fs and 2.85 W of average output power was also demonstrated

Perspectives of identity by descent (IBD) mapping in founder populations

In a founder population patients with a genetic disease are likely to share predisposing genes from a common ancestor. We show that, depending on the distance of the relationship, patients are expected to share extended segments of DNA around the disease gene. Because of the size of the shared segment, a genomic search with DNA markers for such shared segments, identity by descent (IBD) mapping, can efficiently find the map position of genes, particularly due to genetic drift leading to reduction of heterogeneity and the large number of meioses that is implicitly observed. The statistical power of this method and the approximate cost are given as a function of the density of the map of tested markers and the number of generations since a common ancestor. Initial marker spacings between 5 and 15 centiMorgans are shown to be optimal. IBD mapping is applicable to many genetic diseases, because it does not presuppose a specific genetic model
