Elastic Instabilities within Antiferromagnetically Ordered Phase in the Orbitally-Frustrated Spinel GeCoO
Ultrasound velocity measurements of the orbitally-frustrated GeCoO
reveal unusual elastic instabilities due to the phonon-spin coupling within the
antiferromagnetic phase. Shear moduli exhibit anomalies arising from the
coupling to short-range ferromagnetic excitations. Diplike anomalies in the
magnetic-field dependence of elastic moduli reveal magnetic-field-induced
orbital order-order transitions. These results strongly suggest the presence of
geometrical orbital frustration which causes novel orbital phenomena within the
antiferromagnetic phase.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Empirical behavior of a world stock index from intra-day to monthly time scales
Most of the papers that study the distributional and fractal properties of financial instruments focus on stock prices or foreign exchange rates. This typically leads to mixed results concerning the distributions of log-returns and some multi-fractal properties of exchange rates, stock prices, and regional indices. This paper uses a well diversified world stock index as the central object of analysis. Such index approximates the growth optimal portfolio, which is demonstrated under the benchmark approach, it is the ideal reference unit for studying basic securities. When denominating this world index in units of a given currency, one measures the movements of the currency against the entire market. This provides a least disturbed observation of the currency dynamics. In this manner, one can expect to disentangle, e.g., the superposition of the two currencies involved in an exchange rate. This benchmark approach to the empirical analysis of financial data allows us to establish remarkable stylized facts. Most important is the observation that the repeatedly documented multi-fractal appearance of financial time series is very weak and much less pronounced than the deviation of the mono-scaling properties from Brownian-motion type scaling. The generalized Hurst exponent H(2) assumes typical values between 0.55 and 0.6. Accordingly, autocorrelations of log-returns decay according to a power law, and the quadratic variation vanishes when going to vanishing observation time step size. Furthermore, one can identify the Studentt distribution as the log-return distribution of a well-diversified world stock index for long time horizons when a long enough data series is used for estimation. The study of dependence properties, finally, reveals that jumps at daily horizon originate primarily in the stock market while at 5min horizon they originate in the foreign exchange market. The principal message of the empirical analysis is that there is evidence that a diffusion model without multi-scaling could reasonably well model the dynamics of a broadly diversified world stock inde
European summer climate variability in a heterogeneous multi-model ensemble
Recent results from an enhanced greenhouse-gas scenario over Europe suggest that climate change might not only imply a general mean warming at the surface, but also a pronounced increase in interannual surface temperature variability during the summer season (Schär etal., Nature 427:332-336, 2004). It has been proposed that the underlying physical mechanism is related to land surface-atmosphere interactions. In this study we expand the previous analysis by including results from a heterogeneous ensemble of 11 high-resolution climate models from the PRUDENCE project. All simulations considered comprise 30-year control and enhanced greenhouse-gas scenario periods. While there is considerable spread in the models' ability to represent the observed summer variability, all models show some increase in variability for the scenario period, confirming the main result of the previous study. Averaged over a large-scale Central European domain, the models simulate an increase in the standard deviation of summer mean temperatures between 20 and 80%. The amplification occurs predominantly over land points and is particularly pronounced for surface temperature, but also evident for precipitation. It is also found that the simulated changes in Central European summer conditions are characterized by an emergence of dry and warm years, with early and intensified depletion of root-zone soil moisture. There is thus some evidence that the change in variability may be linked to the dynamics of soil-moisture storage and the associated feedbacks on the surface energy balance and precipitatio
Critical Phenomena at the Antiferromagnetic Phase Transition of Azurite
We report on high-resolution acoustic, specific-heat and thermal expansion
measurements in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition at T_N =
1.88 K on a high-quality single crystal of the natural mineral azurite. A
detailed investigation of the critical contribution to the various quantities
at T_N is presented. The set of critical exponents and amplitude ratios of the
singular contributions above and below the transition indicate that the system
can be reasonably well described by a three-dimensional Heisenberg
antiferromagnet.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of ICM 2012, JKP
NR2A at CA1 synapses is obligatory for the susceptibility of hippocampal plasticity to sleep loss.
A loss in the necessary amount of sleep alters expression of genes and proteins implicated in brain plasticity, but key proteins that render neuronal circuits sensitive to sleep disturbance are unknown. We show that mild (4-6 h) sleep deprivation (SD) selectively augmented the number of NR2A subunits of NMDA receptors on postsynaptic densities of adult mouse CA1 synapses. The greater synaptic NR2A content facilitated induction of CA3-CA1 long-term depression in the theta frequency stimulation range and augmented the synaptic modification threshold. NR2A-knock-out mice maintained behavioral response to SD, including compensatory increase in post-deprivation resting time, but hippocampal synaptic plasticity was insensitive to sleep loss. After SD, the balance between synaptically activated and slowly recruited NMDA receptor pools during temporal summation was disrupted. Together, these results indicate that NR2A is obligatory for the consequences of sleep loss on hippocampal synaptic plasticity. These findings could advance pharmacological strategies aiming to sustain hippocampal function during sleep restriction
Microscopic Theory for the Markovian Decay of Magnetization Fluctuations in Nanomagnets
We present a microscopic theory for the phonon-driven decay of the
magnetization fluctuations in a wide class of nanomagnets where the dominant
energy is set by isotropic exchange and/or uniaxial anisotropy. Based on the
Zwanzig-Mori projection formalism, the theory reveals that the magnetization
fluctuations are governed by a single decay rate , which we further
identify with the zero-frequency portion of the associated self-energy. This
dynamical decoupling from the remaining slow degrees of freedom is attributed
to a conservation law and the discreteness of the energy spectrum, and explains
the omnipresent mono-exponential decay of the magnetization over several
decades in time, as observed experimentally. A physically transparent
analytical expression for is derived which highlights the three
specific mechanisms of the slowing down effect which are known so far in
nanomagnets.Comment: 7 page
Interplay of Spin and Lattice Degrees of Freedom in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet CdCr_2O_4: High-field and Temperature Induced Anomalies of the Elastic Constants
Temperature and magnetic field studies of the elastic constants of the
chromium spinel CdCr_2O_4 show pronounced anomalies related to strong
spin-phonon coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet. A detailed comparison
of the longitudinal acoustic mode propagating along the [111] direction with
theory based on an exchange-striction mechanism leads to an estimate of the
strength of the magneto-elastic interaction. The derived spin-phonon coupling
constant is in good agreement with previous determinations based on infrared
absorption. Further insight is gained from intermediate and high magnetic field
experiments in the field regime of the magnetization plateau. The role of the
antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction discussed and we compare the
spin-phonon coupling in CdCr_2O_4 in both the ordered and disordered states.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; Appendix added,To appear in Phys Rev.
Elastic Properties and Magnetic Phase Diagrams of Dense Kondo Compound Ce0.75La0.25B6
We have investigated the elastic properties of the cubic dense Kondo compound
Ce0.75La0.25B6 by means of ultrasonic measurements. We have obtained magnetic
fields vs temperatures (H-T) phase diagrams under magnetic fields along the
crystallographic [001], [110] and [111] axes. An ordered phase IV showing the
elastic softening of c44 locates in low temperature region between 1.6 and 1.1
K below 0.7 T in all field directions. The phase IV shows an isotropic nature
with regard to the field directions, while the antiferro-magnetic phase III
shows an anisotropic character. A remarkable softening of c44 and a spontaneous
trigonal distortion εyz+εzx+εxy recently reported by Akatsu et
al. [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72 (2003) 205] in the phase IV favor a ferro-quadrupole
(FQ) moment of Oyz+Ozx+Oxy induced by an octupole ordering.Comment: 9 figures, Strongly Correlated Electron
