Computer Entertainment Technologies for the Visually Impaired: An Overview

Over the last years, works related to accessible technologies have increased both in number and in quality. This work presents a series of articles which explore different trends in the field of accessible video games for the blind or visually impaired. Reviewed articles are distributed in four categories covering the following subjects: (1) video game design and architecture, (2) video game adaptations, (3) accessible games as learning tools or treatments and (4) navigation and interaction in virtual environments. Current trends in accessible game design are also analysed, and data is presented regarding keyword use and thematic evolution over time. As a conclusion, a relative stagnation in the field of human-computer interaction for the blind is detected. However, as the video game industry is becoming increasingly interested in accessibility, new research opportunities are starting to appear

A monthly precipitation database for Spain (1851–2008): reconstruction, homogeneity and trends

The compilation and reconstruction of a dataset integrated by 66 long monthly precipitation series, covering mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, is presented. The reconstruction is based on the hypothesis that the cessation of data recording at one observatory is followed by the establishment of a new observatory very close to the closed one. In order to detect and adjust for possible multiple change points or shifts that could exist in the precipitation series, the R-package CLIMATOL V2.0 is used. This method enables to take advantage of the whole historical Spanish precipitation network in the detection and correction of inhomogeneities. The analysis of annual precipitation trends indicate a high temporal variability. Negative trends dominate for the period 1951–2008 but not for all observatories. On the other hand, positive trends can be detected in the northern Spain for 1902–2008

Energy Absorption of an Abaca-Polyester Composite Material in Simulated Impact Tests

The present investigation analyzes the energy absorption properties of a polyester matrix composite material with abaca fiber reinforcement in search of an alternative material that can replace or reinforce certain elements of the frontal structure of a bus and reduce the risk of driver’s physical injury during a frontal collision. Mechanical tests were carried out with a 70% polyester and 30% abaca composite material, by volume, using a 5×50×3 mm square tubular shape with two reinforcement configurations – continuous longitudinal and discontinuous fiber of 10 mm at random. The mechanical properties required to simulate a frontal crash were obtained, substituting critical parts of the impact structure in an interprovincial bus. The composite material with longitudinal continuous fiber was analyzed, which showed improvements in the energy absorption capacity of the frontal structure of a bus. Resumen La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar las propiedades de absorción de energía de un material compuesto matriz poliéster con refuerzo de fibras de abacá en busca de una alternativa que permita sustituir o reforzar ciertos elementos de la estructura frontal de un autobús, para disminuir el riesgo de daños físicos en el conductor durante un choque frontal. Se realizaron ensayos mecánicos con un material compuesto 70% poliéster y 30% abacá, en volumen; con forma tubular cuadrada 50x50x3mm con dos configuraciones de refuerzo: fibra continua longitudinal y discontinua a azar de 10mm. Se obtuvieron las propiedades mecánicas requeridas para simular un choque frontal, sustituyendo partes críticas de la estructura de impacto en un autobús tipo interprovincial. El material con fibra continua longitudinal analizado, mostró mejoras en la capacidad de absorción de energía de la estructura frontal de un autobús. PREGRIDBAL 1.0: towards a high-resolution rainfall atlas for the Balearic Islands (1950–2009)

This work presents a catalog of daily precipitation fields in the Balearic Islands created with data from AEMET (State Meteorological Agency) assistant observations, including records from 1912. The original digital daily data file has been interpolated onto a regular 100 m-resolution grid (namely PREGRIDBAL), defined with the aim of becoming a valid standard for future methodological improvements and catalog upgrades. Daily precipitation amounts on each grid point are calculated using an analysis method based on ordinary kriging, using the daily anomaly with respect to the annual mean for all available observations each day. Due to quality concerns, the time span for products derived from the catalog is limited to the 1950–2009 period, when the number of operating stations reached 200.The study has partially been funded by the “Conselleria d’Educació, Cultura i Universitats del Govern de les Illes Balears” and FEDER fund (project 7/2011 competitive research groups) and Ministry of Science and Innovation (projects CGL2011-24458 and CGL2014-52199-R)

Extrusión del componente plástico de la copa acetabular sin luxación protésica: a propósito de un caso

Se present a un caso de extrusión del component e plástic o (polietileno) ocurrido en el transcurso del primer me s del postoperatorio en un pacient e que había sufrido un recambio del component e acetabular.
