This article is about the unknown and without documenting image of Saint Catherine that belongs to the Museo do Pobo Galego (Santiago de Compostela). The first part is focused on its morphological analysis in order to, acting consciously as connoisseurs, determine those identity signs that allow us, according to the judgment of the eye, attribute it to Mateo de Prado. In the second part, we carry out the interpretation of the work developing the expressive nature of its style in light of a history of the culture

Adversus cardinalis baronii, aliorumque opinionem.

Consecuentemente, damos a conocer el tipo “Santiago peregrino extático”.In the studies devoted to James The Greater iconography three types are traditionally differentiated: apostle, pilgrim and knight, and, at the same time, the pilgrim type is subdivided according to the saintly attitude with James either walking or James standing. With this article, we aim to contribute to these studies showing the appearance of a third variety in the Modern Galicia, which therefore, enriches the iconography of the apostle known until now due to the innovative representation that implies by itself and also because of the deep historic implications that we think it involves. Consequently, we release “Ecstatic Pilgrim St. James” type

Loss of largest and oldest individuals of the Montpellier snake correlates with recent warming in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula

The effects of climate change on organisms are now being extensively studied in many different taxa. However, the variation in body size, usually shrinkage in response to increasing temperature, has received little attention regarding to reptiles. During past periods of global warming, many organisms shrank in size, and current evidence and experiments manipulating temperature have shown a biomass decrease in some organisms with increasing temperatures. Here we test whether the body size of the Montpellier snake Malpolon monspessulanus from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula is changing and correlated with the increasing temperature in this region during a 39year period (1976–2014). We measured the snout–vent length (SVL) of vouchers in scientific collections to check for trends in adult body size at the population level in relation with temperature, while controlling for the age of the individuals (estimated by skeletochronology, n¼141). Given the great ontogenetic variation in body size of the study species, we categorized age in 3 classes: “young adults” (under 5 years old), “intermediate adults” (from 5 to 7 years old), and “old adults” (from 8 to 14 years old). By means of linear mixed models, we found a negative relationship between SVL of “old adults” and average annual temperature in the region during the lifetime of each individual. Our results indicate that largest and oldest individuals of the Montpellier Snake, that is, males because of strong sexual size dimorphism in this species, disappeared from the study population, and suggest that it occurred in response to rising environmental temperature.Junta de Andalucía RNM-25

Accessing a 'very, very secret garden' : exploring children's and young people's literacy practices using participatory research methods

    Get PDF
Despite the wealth of publications on children’s and young people’s participation in research, the connections between participatory research methods (PRM) and literacy studies remain unclear. The aim of this paper is to understand why it is particularly pertinent to use PRM in literacy studies (particularly New Literacy Studies). In order to capture the complexity and plurality of these methods, we discuss two studies, one conducted with children in Chile and the other with young people in Québec (Canada). We argue that by using PRM, researchers can support participants in the appropriation of an alternative and potentially empowering view of literacy

A practical approach to network-based processing

The usage of general-purpose processors externally attached to routers to play virtually the role of active coprocessors seems a safe and cost-effective approach to add active network capabilities to existing routers. This paper reviews this router-assistant way of making active nodes, addresses the benefits and limitations of this technique, and describes a new platform based on it using an enhanced commercial router. The features new to this type of architecture are transparency, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and full control over layer 3 and above. A practical experience with two applications for path characterization and a transport gateway managing multi-QoS is described. Most of this work has been funded by the IST project GCAP (Global Communication Architecture and Protocols for new QoS services over IPv6 networks) IST-1999-10 504. Further development and application to practical scenarios is being supported by IST project Opium (Open Platform for Integration of UMTS Middleware) IST-2001-36063 and the Spanish MCYT under projects TEL99-0988-C02-01 and AURAS TIC2001-1650-C02-01.Publicad

Professional Career of Women Graduates in Computing in Costa Rica: a Generational Study

    Get PDF
The evolution in women´s professional career in computing has been studied very little. In a previous study (LAWWCC 2016) we reported results of an exploratory study that aimed to characterize the professional development model of people that studied Computer Sciences in Costa Rica, in terms of roles and industrial sectors with which they began their professional career and in which they report are currently working.. Surprisingly, no important gender differences were depicted amongst men and women. As a result, some valid concerns were raised regarding the question: do the results represent the behavior of women in all professional career stages? As a result, in this study, results are now grouped by generations. The aim of this study is to determine whether there are differences in these variables in the professional career evolution for different generations. Results are obtained from an online survey responded by 166 women professionals in Computer Sciences. Women are grouped in four generational categories: baby boomers, generation X, young and mature millennials. The main finding of this research is that the professional evolution of women, with respect to the role and sector in which they perform, revel different behaviors for women of different generations.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa (SADIO

Effect of DNA repair deficiencies on the cytotoxicity of resveratrol

    Get PDF
Numerous preclinical studies have shown that the naturally-occurring polyphenol resveratrol may produce health-beneficial effects in a variety of disorders, including cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer, and cardiovascular diseases. Resveratrol has entered clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of several of these disorders. This polyphenol is also available in the market as a dietary supplement. Experimental data have shown, however, that resveratrol induces DNA damage in a variety of cells. Here we review such evidence and evaluate the cytotoxicity of resveratrol (MTT assay) in cells deficient in several major DNA repair pathways (i.e., homologous recombination, non-homologous end joining, base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, and Fanconi anemia repair). Cells deficient in base excision repair (EM9), nucleotide excision repair (UV4 and UV5) and Fanconi Anemia (KO40) were slightly hypersensitive to resveratrol-induced cytotoxicity with respect to their parental cells (AA8). Our results suggest that these pathways may participate in the repair of the DNA damage induced by resveratrol and that deficiencies in these pathways may confer hypersensitivity to the genotoxic activity of this dietary constituen
